JP Ricciardi: Blue Jays Players Available in Trade?

Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi likely invited open bidding for the marvelous right-hander on Monday with comments first reported by foxsports.com.

"We have to see what's out there," Ricciardi said. "I'm not saying we're going to shop him. But if something makes sense, we at least have to listen. We're [leaning] more toward listening than we've ever been."

This is not the first time Halladay has been perceived as being on the block. Ricciardi's comments, though, were the most definitive indication yet that the Blue Jays -- now seven games behind and in fourth place in the American League East after leading the division for most of April and May -- are thinking of the future and ready to entertain offers for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner, who is 10-2 this season and 74-29 since the start of the 2005 season.

Suitors for the 32-year-old Halladay could be plentiful. In Toronto's own division, the Yankees are again without Chien-Ming Wang and dealing with Joba Chamberlain's struggles, and the Red Sox have not gotten the expected from John Smoltz. The Phillies, Mets, Brewers and Angels are other contenders in need of pitching.

The question is whether any team can, or will, step up with an offer of the type that in 2002 pried Bartolo Colon away from Cleveland. In that deal with the then-Montreal Expos, the Indians landed Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips.

Halladay has a full no-trade clause in a contract that runs through next season. He is being paid $14.25 million this year and is due to earn $15.75 million in 2010.

Halladay would a nice (but fleeting) addition to this team, but Zduriencik probably has his eyes on another prize......

Star-divide

If the Jays are thinking of rebuilding, might the productive Scott Rolen (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5668) be on the block as well?  Chris Woodward certainly isn't in the M's long-term plans for third base, and Beltre's out 6-7 more weeks.

The only problem with this scenario?  When Beltre comes off the DL, the M's would have two third basemen for one lineup spot.  If Beltre was out for the entire season, this decision would be much easier.  Maybe Rolen could DH.

Rolen is wasted at DH and Halladay is prohibitively expensive.

The only Blue Jay I can see us possibly trading for is Scutaro and even that seems like a stretch.

I can’t imagine Halladay being moved in this market environment.

I like the idea of looking SS first.

I don’t want this to devolve into rosterbation but I hate the idea of giving up anything of value for a month and a half of a 3B that we don’t have a spot for when Beltre comes back.

Absolutely agree

Fangraphs has him as the 12th most valuable position player so far this year. Now he obviously isn’t going to keep up his offensive production, but still even with ZIP projected .333 wOBA for the rest of the season and his defense he would be a huge upgrade. He also leads the league in walks and our line-up could sure use more patience.

The great thing is that there is no way the Blue Jays could ask that much for him. It’s 33 year old journeyman Marco Scutaro. Blue Jays could use some relief pitching, Mark Lowe seems like a good fit, I can’t imagine them asking for a whole lot more then that. Scutaro would be eligible for free agency after the season.

I don't really think they would

He’s not a guy with a particularly strong track record, he is a free agent after this year and he won’t be a compensation worthy free agent. I also don’t think he is a on a lot of team’s radars as a potential acquisition. And as an organization their needs are 3B depth, reliever depth, and maybe some more starting pitching. Lowe has the big fastball and a decent ERA to look at plus a decent track record for strikeouts. I just don’t think that the price of Scutaro is going to be what his actual value is.

I thought Scutaro was on pace to be Type A.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

What's the best 1-2-3 punch ever?

The best I can think off my head is 2005 Astros – Clemens, Oswalt, Pettit

Sain was only good for 2-3 years

with the Braves. During those 2-3 years Spahn was only good one and a half of those years. Furthermore during each of those years there were other good starters on the staff, the only way that poem was accurate was looking only at wins

I suspect Ricciardi is floating this to see if he can get someone to offer to take both Halladay

and Wells.

If they’re going to compete going forward, they need to move the Wells contract, and it’s terrible. Halladay might be the player that would make a team say “sure, I’d eat that.”

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

Wells

is so unvaluable, that they probably need to trade 2 Halladay to get someone to take Wells, this is actually not quiet as much of a joke as it sounds. unreal

The problem is that the price won't be right

we’re much better off getting a SS that can contribute at third for six weeks then shift over than to get a guy who will be redundant once Beltre returns.

True. I do wonder what JP would want in return for Rolen.

Also, shoulder problems for a third baseman can be pretty detrimental, no?

This is not the kind of thing I want to see this team do at this point

The mariners were not, repeat were not, build to contend this year but are doing so on account of no small amount of luck in late innings, generally weak competition, and god getting even with Anaheim. Lets not do Bedard 2.0 because of an illusory run at the division.

Its not that I don’t want the team in the playoffs, or that I’m sure they won’t make it, it’s that Halladay would not fix the major problems this team has, rather the cost of acquiring him would compound them.

My bad I skimmed...

Yeah Rolen… it’s an interesting idea. He’s running a .355 BABIP right now, which is well over what you should expect, and he’d get hurt by Safeco. What’s his contract like? Ultimately I think it’s still a no because any deal I’d want the Mariners make must involve Washburn going away for a MIF that will be with the team for a few years to come. I guess they could land Rolen in a three way with Philly or something (Washburn AND Halladay to Philly, we get Rolen plus someone, Toronto gets Phllly’s farm system – but that’s a pipe dream).

Meanwhile, the more likely-to-happen Mariners-related news here

Any chance the Angels could put together a package for Halladay? Because that would suck donkey nuts.

by calim on Jul 8, 2009 12:17 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

With what prospects?

the Angels have a bunch of overpaid veterans on the downsides of their careers and their best prospects either a) can’t hit or b) are not breathing.

I don’t think they have anything worthwhile to offer Toronto that wouldn’t end up hurting their club.

Napoli would have to be in the deal

BJ Ryan for free?

Saw the Blue Jays released Ryan today. Think he’s worth picking up for the minimum to see if he could be our lefty specialist?

The price is right.

Is JP

The worest GM ever? the Wells and Ryan signing makes Bill Bavasi looks like Billy Beanes.

Espically Wells, he is due to be paid 20M per starting 2011 for 4 season. he is currently playing at a -1 WAR value. a -2 WAR guy , which is horrific beyond believe.

He has drafted ok and his trading records aren’t bad. but seriously, even all the Yankee bust contracts havn’t been nearly as bad as Vernon Wells, and the Yankees can afford those, the Blue Jays can’t.

.

No, that's Jim Bowden.

Plus, Ricciardi did build that broken-down pitcher factory. Random guy shows up, throws 5 quality starts, and then gets elbow surgery. Rinse, repeat.

by Llewdor on Jul 9, 2009 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he's not.

He’s not good but not awful. The Wells contract is awful but at the time of its signing Wells was a 28 year old worth almost 6 wins a season. While it’s far too long of a contract, hindsight makes it worse.

Why would the Mariners want to trade for Scott Rolen?
I just don’t get it, they’re not a serious contender this year so why give up prospects AND take up a sizeable amount of salary for an old 3B?

by Ohpityme on Jul 10, 2009 6:48 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We appear to be more of a contender than the Mets.

Especially after the acquisition of Francouer.

Does anyone think John McDonald could be had for cheap?

He would improve the shortstop defense greatly and sadly the shortstop hitting too.
