I was under the impression that it had a mortailty rate similar to the common flu.

But the media made it seem like it was the plague.

Chad Brown for the Ring of Honor!

by Big Seahawk Loser on Jul 31, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

It wasn't really the media's fault entirely

People just always panic when this type of stuff comes about, regardless of how serious it actually is. And yes, it’s not much worse than the common flu.

FUCK THE ANGELS!

by Fuckmikereilly on Jul 31, 2009 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

The influenza viruses mutate every year.

And it’s the CDC’s (?) job to stay updated on the top few versions of the virus likely to infect the population every year, and adjust that year’s vaccinations accordingly.

The swine flu was scary because it crossed over from another species, and wasn’t covered by vaccinations. So, yeah, everyone panicked, but it turned out to be no big deal (in comparison to the usual influenza virus).

Maybe I'm just misinformed but I was under the assumption that Swine Flu is a new strain of flu,

so how could have the swine flu killed millions? I understand that in the history of the earth the flu has killed millions but swine flu killing millions doesn’t sound right.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 31, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Spanish Flu, Swine Flu, Avian Flu

these are all the common flu. Some are worse than others. The deal with the Spanish Flu was not that it was very virulent, the problem was it elicited so strong a response in the infected that their immune systems shut their bodies down and they dies. Similar to septic shock but not systemic. We work with the only lab in the states that has the 1918 virus still in culture.

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jul 31, 2009 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

The fact that the Swine Flu is not yet awful is that it hasn't yet mutated into its final form, which it will do by the time it comes back around

next winter. The good news is that there are fast and efficient ways of making massive amounts of vaccine that we’rent around as recently as two years ago

De Gutibus non disputandum est

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jul 31, 2009 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Swine flu is nowhere close to the Spanish Influenza in terms of virulence.

And that was almost two weeks ago. You’re contagious for what, 48-72 hours?

by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2009 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Apparently it's not contagious enough

because Blalock is still in the lineup. He needs to go away for the rest of the series.

The way I see it is

she registered for her say, spring quarter classes with a few weeks left in the winter quarter. Then she failed her 300 or 400 level course, which was a pre-req for something she had registered for for winter. Not being able to get into that class, and refusing to take unneeded lower level courses, she took the farm practicum instead.

Interestingly the etymology of average once referred to damaged goods.

I do believe that mediocre imparts a more negative connotation than average. Average in this case implying the middle, as in a math equation. Somebody smart help me out here.
