Washburn Rumors.

I'll be keeping a thread full of Washburn rumors until the deadline which is tomorrow from what I've read so far GMZ is trying to fleece people. ERA! SHINY!! To the Jump!

Star-divide

People are interested in Wash

Washburn has many suitors: Was told about 10 teams have called Seattle about Jarrod Washburn now. And the Twins don’t do well when they have to beat out a lot of teams for players.

However The Brew Crew and Rangers are no longer pursuing Wash...

The Yanks seem to be our best bet for a trade and SI agrees.

The Yankees haven't heard back from the Mariners since Seattle requested either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes in an initial conversation about lefty starter Jarrod Washburn, but remain interested at some price.

Mariners people are believed to be scouring the list of desirable Yankees players back in Seattle. Top outfield prospect Austin Jackson and catching prospects Jesus Montero and Austin Romine would probably also be off-limits in such a deal, but the Yankees have some other prospects that may interest Seattle.

Yes to Phil Hughes! And I hate Joba Chamberlain but if GMZ gets him I'll be meh...

If he's not traded by the deadline I'll be kinda bummed. An August deal is possible but yeah...

Quick Update!:

Yanks not alone in pursuit of Washburn — 8:42 p.m.

The Yankees are not the only team pursuing Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

The Tigers also are interested in Washburn, a major-league source says, and the Brewers could jump back in.

Yet, the Mariners still are not sending clear signs that they are willing to move Washburn, who ranks third in the American League with a 2.64 ERA, just ahead of Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.

"The Mariners don't want to send the wrong signs if they trade him," one source says. "It could look like they're giving up."

The M's, six games out in the wild-card race and 7 1/2 games out in the AL West, acquired shortstop Jack Wilson and right-hander Ian Snell from the Pirates on Wednesday.

They likely would seek a significant return for Washburn, even though he is a free agent at the end of the season.

Talks between the Yankees and Mariners were in the "early stages" Thursday, one source said — a curious assessment, considering that the deadline for non-waiver trades is 4 p.m. ET on Friday.

Washburn, who turns 35 on Aug. 13, has a partial no-trade clause giving him the right to block deals to 10 teams.

The Yankees were among the clubs he could veto last year, the Tigers and Brewers were not. The list is believed to have changed slightly this year, but the exact details are not known.

Ugh...

10:33pm: Heyman says the Yankees and Mariners are now "talking Washburn." The Yankees won't part with Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Austin Jackson, Austin Romine or Jesus Montero, but with those exceptions, Heyman says the M's have their pick of Yankees prospects.

Now THAT'S more like it! I'd still prefer Hughes though over most of the Yankees top 10... Be blinded by the ERA! ERA! SHINY BETTER THAN HALLADAY!

So take your pick of their top 20...

1) Jesus Montero, C, Grade B+: I believe in the bat. Where he fits with the glove I don’t know.

2) Austin Jackson, OF, Grade B: Should be a solid player but not a star. Will that be enough in New York?

3) Dellin Betances, RHP, Grade B-: Very high ceiling, has flashed dominance, can he stay healthy?

4) Austin Romine, C, Grade B-: More likely to stick behind the plate than Montero, though not as good a hitter.

5) Zach McAllister, RHP, Grade B-: A favorite of mine heading into 2008, looks like a strong inning-eater type.

6) Mark Melancon, RHP, Grade B-: Almost ready for major league action, should be good in pen and has closer potential.

7) Jairo Heredia, RHP, Grade B-: Looks like a major sleeper to me, and this is an aggressive ranking.

8) Andrew Brackman, RHP, Grade C+: Yankees propaganda is thick around this guy. Great arm, healthy now, but I don’t buy into the command yet. Want to see evidence.

9) Phil Coke, LHP, Grade C+: I like what he did a lot last year. Should be a very useful pitcher.

10) Alfredo Aceves, RHP, Grade C+: Has reached his ceiling, but like Coke he should be useful

11) Wilkins de la Rosa, LHP, Grade C+: Intriguing power lefty with a fresh arm.

12) Humberto Sanchez, RHP, Grade C+: Another power arm for the pen, command problems still an issue.

13) Jon Albaladejo, RHP, Grade C+: Another solid pen arm if healthy.

14) David Robertson, RHP, Grade C+: Yet another pen arm. ERA should have been closer to 4.00 based on the components. Hasn’t pitched 50 innings yet so he qualifies.

15) Brad Suttle, 3B, Grade C+: Will need to show enough power for third base.

16) Arodys Vizcaino, RHP, Grade C+: Very young, could rank in the top 10 next year if he develops properly.

17) Christian Garcia, RHP, Grade C+: Another promising power arm if healthy.

18) George Kontos, RHP, Grade C+: Will need more consistent command.

19) Kanekoa Texeira, RHP, Grade C+: Power sinker/slider guy acquired in Swisher deal, yet another pen option.

20) Eduardo Sosa, OF, Grade C+: Very high ceiling guy, but need some North American data. Could rank as high as 8 depending on criteria and how much you trust DSL performance.

21) Eric Hacker, RHP, Grade C+: Surprise addition to 40-man roster, nice track record but injury-prone, fifth starter type when healthy.

Thanks for Minor League Ball Feat. John Sickels for the list.

11:05pm: Executives from three teams that have spoken with the Mariners tell ESPN.com's Buster Olney that they get the sense the Mariners won't move Washburn.

FUCK BUSTER OLNEY! ERA SHINY ERA!

A prospect's value isn't static

Look at Jeff Clement.

They probably made the right call at the time re: Santana, but in 7 starts this year he’s STILL got a tRA near 6.00. He’s been lights out in the ‘pen, which is handy, but I think there are a lot of doubters that he’s a starter long-term. And that hurts his value.

The Yanks seem like the type to overpay

the only thing that bugs me is that I wouldn’t mind eating Jarrod’s contract, but that wouldn’t give us as much leverage in negotiations with NY as it would with say, the Twins.

The Rangers would obviously have never worked because they'd have to overpay. Negotiations would be "Elvis Andrus, Justin Smoak or Neftali Felix" and then they would end.

As for the Yankees, I’d be happy to have Joba in the bullpen only. But I don’t see why they’d trade for a starter like Washburn at the price of Hughes when it would just be better to put Hughes in the rotation. I don’t really like Austin Jackson and don’t see a place for him in the outfield. Jesus Montero would be good but ain’t gonna happen.
I like that Jack is asking for one of those two pitchers, but it ain’t gonna happen. Let’s just get one good prospect from any team and I’ll be satisfied.

Per MLBTR:
ESPN’s Buster Olney rejects the idea that the Ms asked for Chamberlain or Hughes.

He really wants to be right, doesn’t he?

by Coach Owens on Jul 30, 2009 1:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would be very surprised if they didn't ask for either one

Those types of pitchers that could slide into the starting rotation now are exactly what we’re looking for. They may have been quickly rebuffed and that was the end of it, but I have trouble believing they didn’t come up.

Also...

I’ve heard that the Yankees have basically taken every decent player that Seattle could want off of the board. Essentially we may be able to replace the 3 A-ball pitchers we traded if we work out a deal with NY.

Rosenthal, or whoever updates the Foxsports blog,

links Washburn and Detroit. It seems like complete speculation based on the Tigers young pitching staff and Kenny Rogers success, but that’s a new one to me.

by Jed MC on Jul 30, 2009 2:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's interesting..

It sounds like pure speculation to me too, but who knows. If there is one thing we learned in the past 48 hours it is that GMZ has a pretty good system to avoid information leaks.

I’m curious about the Astros now. They were looking for a starting pitcher before today and have since cut Russ Ortiz..

Joel Sherman of the NY Post
But when I noted to Zduriencik that his club is minus-43 this year in run differential and no club has ever made the playoffs with a mark that bad (the worst was minus-42 by the 2005 Padres), Zduriencik said, “we are on the outside looking in and it would take extraordinary things to happen.” In fact, the longer we talked, the more it felt to me like Zduriencik was willing to move Jarrod Washburn before tomorrow’s 4 p.m. deadline.

The Yanks are among the teams that have checked in on Washburn. However, as of this afternoon the two sides still had not discussed names. In addition, Hal Steinbrenner has ruled that the team cannot take on significant money the rest of the season. That is a huge reason why the Yanks are not players on Roy Halladay. Washburn has about $3.7 million owed to him the remainder of the season, which could be a hurdle for the Yanks.

“I am not giving this guy away,” Zduriencik said. “He is a valuable piece to us. … He shouldn’t come cheap if he is moved.”

I find it kind of crazy that Washburn is getting such little interest.

Are GMs just getting smarter? The guy is sitting 3rd in the league in ERA.

You would think even as teams are getting more saber friendly, some GM in a pennant race would jump on this guy.

by Rudy4three on Jul 30, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it's more of an issue of teams not wanting to give up players under club control and being wary of adding salary.

Even with the economic outlook improving there’s still a lot of uncertainty, and I think teams are beginning to value cost-controlled players a great deal more than they used to.

Or maybe it's Jack Z and his notorious tight lipped policy on trades meaning not much is getting leaked.

The fuck?
Melvin said he talked to clubs about "10 or 12" starting pitchers this week without coming close to a trade. He checked in one last time with Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik about lefty Jarrod Washburn but talks did not progress.

"It looks like he’s going to keep Washburn," said Melvin. "He’s going to try to win as many games as he can. Arizona appears to be that way, too, (with pitchers Doug Davis and Jon Garland)."

by Rudy4three on Jul 30, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do you think Z would posture with him?

I don’t. Based on thet bits and pieces that have come out, it sounds as if Arizona is asking for a similar return for Doug Davis. He has a shiny ERA as well. Of course, he was once a Brewer and was traded away. Should he net top prospect(s)?

The sellers are asking really high prices and mid-day tomorrow there will be trades as they get what they can.

What about Ian Kennedy?

He was absolutely lights out (2.74 tRA) in AAA in April before having surgery to fix an aneurysm in May – he hopes to pitch again in the minors this year or in winter ball, although it looks like there’s still no clear time frame (but I could be wrong on that).

I also thought Andrew Brackman is intriuging, but he’s had a terrible year in class A ball but signed a major league contract out of college and already makes a million dollars a year (his contract on Cot’s is insane) and his options are only through 2013. He has two plus pitches and has ace potential, but that’s a bit too expensive a project.

by Decatur on Jul 30, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So would Dave Cameron

who saw him pitch down in Carolina — his scouting report was scathing. “Two plus pitches”? Not that game, anyway — nowhere close, and no command, either.

by The Ancient Mariner on Jul 31, 2009 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, I'd be thrilled with Betances.

Baseball America said this winter that he has front-of-the-rotation potential if he stays healthy, and his FIP’s been only 4.30 in High-A despite his seeming struggles (stats here). He has about a K an inning but about 6 BB/9, but he’s probably ready for AA in 2010 and is still only 21 this year.

by Decatur on Jul 30, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Problem with Mccallister and Betances are that both are hurt.

Not sure the extent of their injuries, but if healthy they would be no brainers for Washburn

Oops. Jason Stark of ESPN says:

The Dodgers are looking at relievers, preferably a righthander, and he mentioned David Weathers, Arthur Rhodes, Matt Capps, Jason Fresor, and Mark Lowe – I’d love to get something for Mark Lowe while we can sell high (although once he puts his changeup and curveball and fastball together and working he’ll be amazing, but there’s no guarentee that will happen and his tRA is awful this year).

by Decatur on Jul 30, 2009 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has a FB/SL/CU combo.

And this is selling low actually since Mark Lowe has all the pitches and velocity to be a lights out closer. His K rates have declined though and his LD rate is kinda high.

All of Z's trades so far

have basically been “this is the player I want, now I’m going to go get him.” I kind of wonder how he’s going to do when he has a player to sell. That’s the reason I worry we keep Washburn. Because if Z doesn’t see a particular player, he may just say no deal.

FUCK THE ANGELS!

by Fuckmikereilly on Jul 30, 2009 10:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't buy it.

For example, Zduriencik probably never would have traded for Gutierrez if the Fernando Perez trade hadn’t fallen through. But it did, so he looked elsewhere for a center fielder.

He probably could have had Brignac or Hardy, but it appears the price was too high for his taste, so he found a different shortstop.

Z’s not perfect, but I wouldn’t be too quick to project a Bavasi-like quality like that onto him.

by Teej on Jul 30, 2009 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah this.

None of Z’s trades or acquisitions have been for a specific player… aside from maybe Branyan, but there were a lot of reasons there that made tons of sense (needed a first baseman, cheap, lefty, etc).

Going balls to the wall for a specific guy was Bavasi’s calling card.

Fans are typically idiots.

If I asked any of you if we were going to be above .500 and “in somewhat contention” at this point during the off-season, not many of you would say yes. For now, I have no reason to doubt what Jack does until he does something stupid. That doesn’t seem to be his M.O.

Random question

If we were to try and sneak Wilson through waivers and trade him, would any team who claimed him have to pay the full amount left on his contract this year, or would they only have to pay the league minimum since the Pirates paid us the cash for the rest of his contract?

Not saying I want to deal Wilson in August, just something I was unsure about.
