Pirates get Tim Alderson for Sanchez
You have to be impressed with the Pirates' haul today. They added some real pitching depth, including a real good one in Alderson, picked up a power lefty bat who may stick in the NL, all for a middle IF that was getting older and not a part of the future, as well as a disgruntled pitcher who wanted the hell out of Steel Town.
Good stuff. Kudos to the Buccos.

No bueno
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.
GET THAT VORP SH!T OUTTA HERE!!!
I would like to point out this gem from his Twitter:
Pirates paying total of $3,308,702.19 in Wilson/Snell trade
Did the extra $2.19 really make that deal? Jack wanted to buy a Snickers bar and Coke on the way out of the negotiation and figured the Pirates should foot the bill?
It was probably $3,308,697.19
and Jack wanted 3.3087 even, so Huntington just pulled a five from his wallet and slammed it down on the table to seal the deal

Clearly
The key was the unwritten part about the M’s letting him expense $10K of that to cover the cheapest air conditioner he could find on craigslist.

It's got to be some kind of percentage of their contracts
Or a pro-rated amount based on how much season is left.
Try not to take me too seriously
Mariners amount is flat
At $400k per player this season. Pro-rated remaining amount from their salaries minus $800k is how it’s computed.
IF I WAS MANAGER I'D HAVE A FIST FIGHT WITH YUNI RIGHT NOW AND KNOCK HIS FUCKING MONKEY HEAD CLEAN OFF (~EM)

Alderson for Sanchez. My goodness. I know SF has a deep system, but what
is the rationale behind dealing one of the better pitching prospects in the game for a good but not great player in Sanchez?
I know Sanchez has another year which is probably pretty important to SF, but what if Beltre had a monster year. SF always seemed interested in him.
SF's system isn't terribly deep
it’s just amazing at the top end

Yeah.
I like how the Pirates were just giving Snell away. As much as we’d like to think that, I trust that Zduriencik is smart enough to realize when a deal isn’t going to get done. It’s not like he did what Bavasi would’ve done and traded Morrow, Clement, Nick Hill, Adam Moore and some other prospect for Wilson + Snell. Let’s not forget that the Pirates aren’t a poorly-run outfit anymore. While I’m still not in love with the Snell trade, I don’ t think it’s terrible either — at least not terrible enough to show me that maybe Jack doesn’t know what he’s doing…
This signature space for rent.

What? Is this for real?
Isn’t Alderson maybe just a step or two behind Bumgardner?
by Kenny Knows Sports on Jul 29, 2009 10:11 PM PDT reply actions
He doesn't have anything close to the stuff of Bumgarner
Doesn’t throw as hard, more of a command guy. Only struck out 46 batters in 72.2 innings at AA this year. Still a fine prospect, but he’s not in Bumgarner’s class.
Kevin Goldstein (BP prospect guy) tweeted this tonight: “Alderson continuously overrated throughout his career. No. 3-4 ceiling, always was.”
Damn I knew it was Bumgarner.
Well that sheds some more light on it. Still, not overrated enough to fetch more than Freddy Sanchez. A fine player, but still… the key to the Giants playoff run?

Giants 2B have posted a .269 wOBA this year (3rd lowest in baseball)
Sanchez has a .336 wOBA and is projected for .327 for the rest of the season. He’s been more than 3 WAR for three out of the past four years, and is already at 2.2 WAR this season – meanwhile the Giants 2B have collectively been well below replacement level. It’s a pretty substantial upgrade for them.
There is no possible way to defend this trade.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 30, 2009 12:50 AM PDT up reply actions
Wasn't defending it
Merely stating that it’s a substantial upgrade for the Giants and that Alderson isn’t a top-tier prospect. I’d still be unhappy if I were a Giants fan.
BA had him as #45 coming into the season
by Graham MacAree on Jul 30, 2009 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions
Sure, but he's a hell of a lot lower than that now
He’s lost velocity and stuff this year, according to almost every source I’ve read, and his stats for this year indicate that as well. His command is still good at least.
As I posted above, KG called his ceiling a #3-4, and Keith Law wrote that none of his pitches are above average and he projects as only a fourth or fifth starter. His luster has worn off a lot this year.
Last I looked BA had him as an 'honourable mention' in their mid-season top 25 pitchers

"Honorable mention", sir ;-)

Apparently there is some slippage in Alderson's stuff.
So says Keith Law.
Sabean might very well have sold high on him.
But I still think it’s a great deal for Pittsburgh.
I certainly would've advocated the Giants going and getting Sanchez, but, well
I think the conventional wisdom here says it pretty well, terrible trade.
