Come to think of it don't the AL teams have first priority?

That would basically narrow it down to Texas/Minnesota/Chicago/Detroit

by Poochie on Jul 26, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps, but I doubt there'd be a point to it.

Nobody is giving up anything of any remote value.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2009 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely

And I’m not one who thinks trading him mixes the chance at that.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess what I'm trying to say is although he probably isn't worth that much

St. Louis has shown us, and the Phillies look like they are about to show us that there’s still front offices out there operating as thought it is still 1996. I wouldn’t completely rule out getting some sort a worth while piece is all.

But I agree that it’s unlikely he’ll be moved, and I wish we could have traded him in May.

by Poochie on Jul 26, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Since May all he has really done is be injured.

He hasn’t done anything to put to ease the minds that think he can’t pitch more than 5 or 6 innings, and can’t stay healthy for shit. I think it would be tough to get something ultra useful for him at this point.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 26, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

Well the scenario is that he comes off the DL and pitches well for 2-3 starts

I don’t know what type of compensation we would be eligible for, or whether offering him arbitration would even be worth it. All I’m saying is that a scenario exists where getting something, even if it is a future 4th outfielder or 5th infielder, could be better than keeping him for one more month.

by Poochie on Jul 26, 2009 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Am I correct in thinking

that in this scenario, there would be no chance of the M’s losing a draft choice?

by don gato on Jul 26, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

If we resign him no more than 1 year 6/7 mil.

I hate that he’s always injured and I don’t like that he is so inefficient, but if he doesn’t throw another pitch today he’s been about league average.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 26, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

It just depends on how much you beleive this is the norm for him.

If this injury isn’t serious, and he bounces back to pitch well the rest of the year that seems about right; he could end up being closer to 3 wins than two, and then last year would look like the outlier. If this is serious, and he has a setback and all of the sudden he doesn’t pitch for the rest of the year, then sure less would be reasonable, and 6/7 mil is probably more like it.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 26, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

A reasonable Bedard offer is going to be hugely incentive laden

I could see him making $12-$14M next year, but only if he misses a maximum of about 5 starts.

Hmm that's something I didn't really think about.

Makes a lot of sense and I agree. Didn’t realize the M’s are only paying him $14.75M over these last two years.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 26, 2009 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Plus,

However much the guys they gave up for him are worth.

by Schaefer on Jul 27, 2009 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Bedard may have received $12-14M on a one year deal two or three years ago

But based on last off-season, I expeect he’ll get less than ten million.

Erik Bedard to the DL

My 2008 Reaction: “NOOOOOOOOOOONONONONONO WHY WHY WHY THIS SUCKS THIS SUCKS!!!!”
My 2009 Reaction: “Alrighty.”

I hate watching shoulder injuries derail good pitchers.

Least favorite part of being a baseball fan. Good luck Erik.

We've been unlucky with injuries this year.

Also, I wonder if we will ever see Bedard in a Mariner uniform again?

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

by EnglishMariner on Jul 26, 2009 11:35 AM PDT reply actions

Why would it appear that so many people think

this is the outcome Bedard wanted. If he pitches hurt, and can not pitch effectively he only impairs any possibility of picking up a big contract in the offseason. (not that there was much of chance before the DL) If people are going to be mad at Bedard, perhaps they should focus on the fact that he pitched hurt and did nothing to help the M’s yesterday by doing so.

by don gato on Jul 26, 2009 11:35 AM PDT reply actions

Because "so many people" are idiots.

Doesn’t help the team, doesn’t help him, doesn’t help anyone, it’s just illogical.

by Zwakamatsu on Jul 26, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

that is generally what I figured

I read LL quite a bit but rarely contribute. In reading the comments over the last day there is a sizeable contingent of people calling out Bedard’s manhood. Don’t know if it is new posters or people trying to poke fun at those who call him out, but either way it is not real well thought out.

Reposting from the fanshot on the same subject

Now that we’re out of it, I see this as a possible positive. Bedard isn’t going to get any money on the market unless he shows something remotely similar to 07. The more time he spends on the shelf the more likely he is to reup with us on a short get-back-in-the-saddle contract. He seems to like it here, and we’ll have a better chance next year than this one. I’d be happy with him sticking around on a 1/6-7m kinda deal while he tries to prove that he can make at least 20-25 starts in a year.

I think I'm with you on this one.

If Bedard ever finds the anti-injury fairy dust that he’s going to need to get through a season unscathed, he may as well do it with us when we’re competitive enough to take the division and potentially do some damage in the playoffs. I’d be willing to do a slightly unreasonable contract with him for one season (but not two or three) because the potential is so high. But if the injuries are a problem that negatively affects his potential, you aren’t wriggling on the hook like we are with certain other contracts.

When he comes back, can they just use him in long relief for the rest of the year?

Seems like a starting pitcher (not Bedard) seems to have a meltdown about once or twice a week or so. 5ish innings is not impressive for a starter but perhaps 3 or 4 innings a couple times a week is the best use of his talents.

Perhaps when rosters expand in a little over a month, it also lets you get a look at some guys in a starting role that you’d normally be nervous about burning the bullpen for.

Really, does it make a huge difference whether it’s Olsen-Bedard vs. Bedard-Olsen, or Vargas-Bedard vs. Bedard-Vargas, in any given stretch of about 7 innings or so?

by Spoomeister on Jul 26, 2009 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

Good point -- maybe he'd be better as a relief pitcher, given he's a strikeout dude.

Pitch fewer innings but more often, better for his shoulder. He’d be an upgrade from Batista for sure.

by LauraBu on Jul 26, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe he should stop fishing so much with Jay Buehner

The thing I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around is that his shoulder is plenty fine to fish all day when he’s got time. But somehow not OK when it’s time for him to actually earn his salary.

I hope the Ms never again sign a contract without provisions for appearances, IP, etc. Upside for great tRA, K/BB ratios, etc. But no more huge amounts of money for nothing. To hell with what Scott Boras wants.

by LauraBu on Jul 26, 2009 12:30 PM PDT reply actions

Isn't IP allowable?

There are some stats (like appearances) that the CBA is ok with, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be ok with others.

Meh, this may turn out to be for the best

I don’t think we were going to get anything for Bedard, and this is going to lower his value significantly. I’ll take him next season for cheap.
