Reid Brignac Pulled From Durham Lineup
I'll talk a little about the Wlad/Saunders decision in a minute, but in the meantime, this could be one big developing story.

The senseless speculation?
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett http://mvn.com/marinersminors/
Okay, so I'll toss this out now
I’ve been hearing for a few days that the M’s were involved as a third team in a Cliff Lee to Tampa Bay deal. The Indians want more pitching than the Rays want to give up and don’t have a use for Brignac (because we already gave them an awesome LH hitting SS…), so the M’s would get Brignac and send additional pitching to the Rays.
What that looks like is up in the air. I’ve heard Morrow/Clement to Cleveland in a huge deal that also sends Victor Martinez to Tampa. I’ve heard that we’d absorb Kazmir’s contract too in order to make TB be able to fit Lee into their budget. I’ve heard smaller deals where it’s just Morrow.
Guess we’ll see.
Washburn would almost certainly go away quickly
His contract and Washburn’s are nearly identical this year. The M’s would probably then move him for the best prospect they could get, and the salaries would come out even for this year.
So, basically, the rumor (and it’s still that for now) is that the M’s would turn Washburn/Morrow/Maybe Clement into Brignac/Kazmir/Prospect.
Yeah, I’d be happy with that.
by davidcameron on Jul 25, 2009 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions
Washburn would go to Tampa Bay in this scenario?
If that is the case, wouldn’t Bedard be more likely?
wait wait wait....
So we’d be giving up Clement and Morrow for Brignac? Or are we also getting Kazmir?
by ManifestDestiny on Jul 25, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
If we end up with Kazmir that would excite me.
I have a hard time believing he’s really a replacement level pitcher.

I’m no Mariners fan, but yeah, I’d say that’s definite win for you guys.
I don’t see why we would want Clement though.

Clement's kind of a Victor Martinez type of catcher
that is, more of a DH.

Is Kazmir still busted, or is he on the path to fixed since being sent down and called back up?
A 6.23 tRA (5.52 tRA*) in 2009 that earns $8M in 2010 and $12M in 2011 is hard to get excited about, but is there anything in his peripherals that implies bad luck? Dave’s article from May doesn’t seem that promising. Has there been a significant change in his profile since then? Or does WOO BRIGNAC override any concerns about Kazmir?
Would like to know where his velocity is? I would like to see what Adair could do with him
as long as there isn’t some underlying physical issue with Kazmir.
His velocity is up last two starts
Hit 95 in each of his last two starts. He’s still a massive risk, but it’s something.
by davidcameron on Jul 25, 2009 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions
The M's seem down on Morrow, I think they'd take that risk as long as it bring back the
SS they desire.
I'm not sure they're *down* on Morrow
but at this point, he might really need to get out of this organization if he’s going to succeed. I’d rather have him than Kazmir, given Kazmir’s contract, but we can afford the latter, and I’d be happy to see us take the risk on him in order to get Brignac, if all we’re giving up otherwise is Clement.
What I don’t see, in the versions of this deal floating around, is how this makes sense for the Indians. Maybe they’re still wrangling over what pitcher(s) TB will give Cleveland, because Morrow/Clement just doesn’t carry the freight as a straight-up return for Lee.
by The Ancient Mariner on Jul 26, 2009 5:59 AM PDT up reply actions
On the Indians' side
We’re still supposed to get a pitcher from TB. And there’s still no assurance that Clement is part of the deal.
Steel Nick
As I said, "in the versions I've seen"
and I figured somebody like Wade Davis had to be heading Cleveland’s way for this to make any sense at all.

But doesn't Tampa have Navarro?
I don’t see why they need Hay is is Victor Martinez too.
2009 Safeco Field Record: 5-0 ; Overall Safeco Field Record: 9-4
Well Valbuena, Choo, Asdrubal Cabrera and now maybe Morrow/Clement
is a decent haul too.
We should try to fill the entire AL Central with former M's.
We already have a start with Podsednik and Carlos Guillen/Ramon Santiago

Well this is exciting
The great thing about Lee going to the Rays is it leaves Washburn the second most eligible bachelor on the trading block. The Phillies have pretty much come out and sad that if they can’t get one of Lee/Halladay it’s Jarrod city for them, and if we pick up Kazmir then anything at all we can get back for Washburn is just super. Come on Amaro, you need a veteran dolphin.

Hey that point is really excellent, moving Kazmir and at the same time increasing the value/immediacy of Washburn
There’s without doubt a better way to structure that sentence, but all the player movement today is pushing my giddy button and your angle on the situation just gave it another push . Yahoooo!

Pulled from the doubleheader today, I presume?
I was at the Durham game last night and he was playing.
Yes.
Although they waited an inning to pull him for not running out an infield fly.
That seems silly.

Listening to the pregame on the radio right now
Wakamatsu said that they have another move to announce, but they’ll do it after the game because they don’t want to bother anybody on the team with it. Probably just to announce that Vargas will be starting tomorrow, and the corresponding roster move to get him up here
I want to poop at your house - Thingray
Though I wonder who they'll move to get Vargas back up here
Bullpen is already kinda thin, so I figure it would be a position player of some sort. We don’t really have anybody we can easily move aside for him, do we?

Baker's take
By the way, for those of you asking about Reed Brignac, the Class AAA shortstop prospect from the Rays, being lifted in today’s Durham game, my Florida contact just told me his leg was bothering him and that he is expected to play Game 2 of tonight’s day-night doubleheader. We’re aware of the trade rumors, yes, and have been looking into them all morning. But for now, nothing appears imminent.
Not much new information, but he believes nothing is imminent.
