Sadly, I think we may have to be sellers at this point. I was hopeful, until this evening. This isn’t just fail, this is a massive, all-out, light-up-the-night fail. I’m totally not wanting to be a bummer about it, but I have the feeling this is our death knell tonight.

Yesterday I listened to 710 on the radio for the first time, and I heard this old guy

say that the Angels are bound to lose – it’s the Mariners’ turn. And Salk asks “okay, why do you think that?” And the caller says: “because I’ve been around a long time, and these things go in cycles. It’s cyclical. And the Angels have been good for a while. They’ve had a good run. So now the time that it’ll cycle back and the Mariners will come on strong.”

And Salk was hacked off, but still surprisingly civil in telling him why that was insane.

I switched it to NPR pretty quickly after that.

Nah, it's near unbearable.

Even the (great) riffing can’t save it from being hard as hell to take. Not the worst show in MST3K history by a longshot (that’s one of the Season 1 eps or maybe Hamlet), but not great.

I don't know how to stop.

by esoteric on Jul 24, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I generally find most of the sci-fi era episodes to be very watchable.

Hobgoblins just captivates you with it’s sleaziness and the riffing is some of the best.

by levnclf on Jul 24, 2009 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

As a Joel guy I used to hate the Sci-Fi era.

But now I’m convinced that it’s better than the CC-Mike era. I think it’s mostly because Trace Beaulieu just seemed to lose control of his characterizations of Dr. Forrester and Crow after Joel left.

But I’m a Joel guy first and foremost. Give me seasons 1-5.5 any day. Any given episode from Season Three alone (especially the Japanese and ’50s sci-fi ones) is guaranteed to brighten my day.

I don't know how to stop.

by esoteric on Jul 24, 2009 9:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah the old classic debate.

I’m more of a Mike guy. I’m all about delivery and I never felt Joel’s was close to being as good as Mike’s. Plus, during the Mike era they tended to riff on more modern movies which I’ve always felt had less of an excuse for being bad thus making them funnier.

by levnclf on Jul 24, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I've learned to appreciate the tone Mike brings to it a lot, but I'll always prefer the more folksy approach of the Joel years.

That meant that when they got flat-out pissed at the film onscreen (e.g. Lost Continent, Castle Of Fu-Manchu, Fugitive Alien II, Manos, Monster A-Go-Go) it meant something. I dunno, it just seems more welcoming to me. Also it probably doesn’t hurt that it’s era I came in on…I started watching as a 10 year old just as Season One was wrapping up.

I don't know how to stop.

by esoteric on Jul 24, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Ahaa, Fugitive Alien has to be one of my favorite Joel episodes.

“Puppet ships to the rescue!” But you’re more fortunate than me. My dad was the one who turned me on to it in it’s last year of re-runs on sci-fi. Youtube has been the tonic for my addiction.

Toronto asked for Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown and J.A. Happ for Roy Halladay.

That’s 2 grade A prospects + a guy who’s 7-1 with a sub 3 ERA this year in the major. Washburn is no Halladay, and we’d be lucky to even get a grade B prospect. Why not just keep him.

An entire section full of hats would be swell.

I suppose it would take some MIT students to also plan a card stunt that would spell out “Sims” or “Rally fries” ….

Explanation.

I was trying to gear the humor around three things, two of which were universal.

1). .Batista’s pitching is a joke.
2). Everybody is gay for Gutierrez.
3). Matt is looking at something out of the corner of his eye.

  1. was what I was basing all this off. My first gag was just a thought balloon of him desperately trying to get Branyan to make eye contact with him (again, going with an obvious gay for Branyan theme). This was my second idea… a tuned out Matt starts to think about happier things… like … well you get the joke, I hope.

Too much? Not enough? Scrap it?

Fans are typically idiots.
