Reason to worry? I don't know much about mechanics, but I do know that Bedard has had those hip problems in the past.

Someone who knows more about mechanics than I do...is this reason to worry?

Felix has turned like that all season. In the ASG he was just amped up and doing it to an extreme, I think.

Someone told me that Bedard turned him onto the hip turn thing, but I have no idea if that’s true or not. I don’t know why you’d take that advice considering Bedard’s hip problems. I’ve also heard it exposes you to oblique problems and can cause timing issues. I dunno. I wouldn’t worry about it. Odds are he’ll only have a very subtle turn in his next start.

Definitely, but just because they CAN cause timing issues doesn't mean they do in Felix's case.

We’d have to slow down the tape. I’m working on turning these clips into .gifs, should have something up later.

Whoa I take that back

Just looked at some video of his outing against Texas and he was turning just as much.

Interesting…

Well shit.

I hope he tones this “twist” down a bit. Even if it hides his pitches or adds to his pitches, if it comes at the cost of his health it can’t be worth it.

by Mariner Melee on Jul 15, 2009 1:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

WHY? Why do you hope he tones it down?

You have absolutely no reason to think it will lead to injury. None. Absolutely zero reason to believe that.

Hell, maybe it helps his results. Maybe it is one of those mechanical adjustments that make perfect sense. I’ll let Rick Adair decide. But to hope he stops doing it because it kind of looks, in a still image, similar to the motion of a completely different pitcher with a completely different body and completely different history is just plain stupid.

NOBODY HAS ANY IDEA WHETHER IT WILL OR NOT

That’s the point. “analysis” like this is bad because you don’t know the science behind the movements. And even if you do, there’s no way of saying conclusively X leads to Y in all cases.

There has been no conclusive evidence that shows one pitching motion cause injury more than any other.

Look at Lincecum. This has been talked about to death. People may act like they’re experts, but as of today, we still don’t know shit about what is a more or less dangerous pitching motion.

I agree.

Whether you believe there is a place for mechanical analysis from an injury prevention standpoint or not, you can’t jump to conclusions like that, especially before even breaking it down and seeing if it throws anything off. Even then, genetics and personal strength probably play the biggest role in pitching injuries, “bad” mechanics or not.

I will say I don’t like the hip rotation. I don’t see how that CAN’T be bad for the joint. But I’m not too worried at this point.

I love it when people say things like

I will say I don’t like the hip rotation

As a medical professional with a focus on biomechanics, you’ve probably got a unique perspective on what constitutes a good or bad hip rotation, right? What? You’re not a medical professional?

Tim Lincecum twists a bit ...

Maybe that is why we didn’t draft him and instead took the bigger and more fundamentally sound AAA pitcher, Brandon Morrow.

Has he been doing this all year?

I just noticed this during the allstar game.

Is this type of "mechanics analysis" just an annoyance to the regulars around here?

Or does it genuinely piss people off?

Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all

If Dustin Pedroia played in Seattle, not many people would be talking about him.

I think it pisses Graham off

I just find it pretty but irrelevant.

I find myself getting pissed off by it

and the main reason is that unless someone is actually a doctor, has actually studied biomechanics, how joints load/unload under stress, and all that stuff, there is absolutely no earthly way a person can know what effect a particular motion has on a particular pitcher, or whether a change in motion will result in damage/injury.

For some reason, of all the instances of “I read about it on the internets so I’m an expert on it HERE’S WHAT I THINK” one encounters on the internet, this one gets under my skin the worst because there are people who have devoted their entire careers to this type of study who don’t actually have conclusive answers to the “what are the effects of this type of mechanics” questions, and yet some yahoo with an internet connection and a love for buzzwords thinks he knows the answers? No.

It is an issue, for me, of people working backwards and developing a hypothesis that fits the conclusion.

It is elementary in how wrong it is, yet people are utterly convinced they are right. I do not understand it.
