Mariners Trade For Jack Hannahan
This one's coming from Geoff Baker's Twitter. There's a sentence I could never go back in time and tell Jeff of ten year ago.
More in a bit.
Update: via Geoff Baker on Facebook (God this is weird), we're giving up RHP Justin Souza.

Well....at least he's a good fielder at third.
Can’t hit worth shit though.
Meh.

ZiPS rest of season puts him at .310 wOBA going forward.
Obviously not world beating, but that beats the hell out of Chris Woodward.

For sure.
My meh reaction is just this wasn’t how I figured we’d solve the 3B problem.

Either this isn't the final move (or Z doesn't plan on it being the final move)
Or it’s one of those “it doesn’t hurt us, so let’s give it a shot” moves that we can get away with even if we fall out of the race
That's how I felt about Branyan and Gutz too and they turned out magnificent.
But then again I don’t know shit about baseball.

It makes sense
Getting a great third baseman doesn’t make sense, because then what do you do when Beltre comes back? This is a nice stopgap.
My guess is
that we haven’t. This is just a move to make things a little better while the FO works on a more significant move. After all, it’s not like giving up Souza scuttles any hope of getting someone like Hardy or Brignac.

How is this guy not having success?
Doesn’t swing at stuff out of the zone. Doesn’t make a lot of contact on the stuff he does swing at out of the zone. Makes good contact on zone pitches. 17% line drive rate. .ISOD .085. BABIP .268.

From Statcorner
LD% 20(!). Sees over 4 pitcher per at bat in the minors and the majors. Judging by his skill set stats, he looks like he should be having more success than this.

Good defender with a good knowledge of the strike zone.

Souza's mostly a bullpen arm but he's made some spot starts.
Decent K rate, pretty good walk rate. Nothing amazing.

Souza couldn't stay, he's not a color
Our bullpen follows the rules of “Reservoir Dogs”. You can’t stick in the bullpen if your last name isn’t a color. Mr. White, Mr. Kelley, etc.

Mariners Slumpbuster for hire
Looks like he's unlikely to have two full years of service time after this season.
So he’s under control for five years after 2009, if I’m doing it right.
He's also 29
Just because we have years of control doesn’t mean we’re going to use them.
by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 11, 2009 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Absolutely.
Just saying, if he turns into an average-ish hitter with a great glove, he’s ours for cheap. If he doesn’t, he can go away.
First impression is great move...
A major league third basemen from what I can tell… and we give up a bullpen arm from AA. Considering we just dumped Yuni for two young arms, this deal looks even cooler.
If Z isn’t done and is still looking for a shortstop, then all of a sudden our starting nine isn’t looking all that bad.
*Except for Griffey
At least he has an ok OBP.

Hannahan looks to be about a 1-1.5 WAR
Compare that to Cedeno (assuming at least a little regression) with around -.05 to 0, and Johnson a bit below 0.
I’m new to using stats and thinking for myself, but combing through Fangraph’s page, he seems to be an improvement of about a win. Basically a decent stop gap if Beltre doesn’t come back this season, or until he does.
Although most of Hannahan’s value comes from his defense, his bat has a bit of potential to improve.
by AtomicGarden on Jul 11, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions
1 to 1.5 WAR over a full season maybe.
For this season, we’re only going to get half of that. Still, a solid pickup while Adrian’s gone.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jul 11, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Based on Hannahan's ZiPS projected .310 wOBA for the rest of the season and his stellar UZR numbers
He’s roughly equivalent to what Adrian Beltre would give us for the rest of the season (ZiPS projected .325 wOBA and similar UZR), or perhaps ~5 runs less than Beltre or the rest of the season.
Huh, I didn't even notice Hannahan was a lefty.
Neat.
The Rise of a Superstar:Justin Upton-.425 wOBA, 21 years old.

Goodbye Woodward, we knew you more than we wanted to.
He probably stays
and Josh Wilson goes away. But not our starting third baseman!
by Fuckmikereilly on Jul 11, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Woodward's passable as a fifth infielder
But not having him in the lineup everyday is going to be nice.
UZR/150 at 3B: 14.2
Not a huge sample there, of course, but still — seems safe to say he brings pretty good leather at the hot corner.
by The Ancient Mariner on Jul 11, 2009 1:42 PM PDT reply actions
All in all
say he’s somewhere around +5 with the glove the rest of the way and matches the .690 OPS ZIPS projects for him (.310 wOBA), he’ll be a useful player under the current circumstances.

Hahaha. I see you were having problem with a guy named Nelson.
No one likes him because he talks about how much knows about baseball and how good of a pitcher he is. And how he ball on the same team as Tui.

I have read like 5 comments and found out he thinks ERA is not only important, but is in fact the only important stat when it comes to pitching.
Mentally retarded is probably too nice for the guy. Arguing intelligent points with the people who comment there is futile.
It entertained me for a bit, but that's why I stopped
He also think batting average tells you everything about a hitter and no other statistics matter. “you guys can go ahead and say what a great move, but this is pathetic, we are 4.5 games out, we need to make a run at it, if you think otherwise, then i wish you all the worst lucky in life”
My Mariners blog - SodoMojo Twitter Feed
Yeah. When I think about it, I was probably just a significantly less retarded version of Nelson before I came to LL
I didn’t really know anything about evaluating players
My Mariners blog - SodoMojo Twitter Feed
I was going to say 2 years ago I would probably side more with Nelson than with you in the argument.
It’s funny because the only reason I read USSM for the first time was because so many people on the internet hated it so bad for “bashing” and “hating” the M’s and I wanted to figure out why a M’s fan site would hate the Mariners. Now I just have further affirmation that pretty much all mainstream media (news, analysis, music, movies etc.) sucks balls, and 95% of people live with their heads in their asses.
I concur.
That’s actually pretty close to my story of finding LL as well.

Come on out of hiding Nelson Cruz!
Nelson B — an obvious alias. Inability to spell — enormous ape-like hands on a tiny keyboard. Bad advice for Mariners — good for Texas Rangers. Aha!
I try avoid reading that blog
But sometimes I get sucked in – it’s like the Real Housewives of New Jersey.

But that’s ’cause I spied him Saturday at La Carta de Oaxaca. Mucho cerveza on the table by the way.
I like not only that we got an upgrade from our current 3B,
but that we got him for a AA pitcher. The eloquence of trading a black hole for a AA and a A arm, and then trading away a different and worse AA arm for something useful is just great. Z’s moves just make too much god damn sense and I’m not sure if I can handle it.

I would've preferred not to give up Souza
But this is still a good trade, especially if Hannahan’s glove is real. Losing Souza pretty much eliminates our last upper-level starting pitching prospect, though that’s not saying much.
