And what if he connects with all three?

It would be awesome to get 75% of the cycle out of the way with one swing of the bat.

Could that happen?

I just don’t see how you can get a triple, double and single at the same time, even if he hits all three. And in the same vain what if all three are popped up and they are all caught? Triple play?

Via Divish:
For the third straight day, Yuni Betancourt is out of the line-up. And no, it’s not to get Ronny Cedeno more playing time. Cedeno is nursing a nasty contusion on his leg from fouling two balls off his shin. Yuni is sitting out for a reason. My guess is his approach and the attitude he has displayed on the days he isn’t playing haven’t helped.

Hi, I'm new to this thread

I’m actually a Yankee fan and just watched a thrilling comeback by the Bronx bombers against the Rays.

Can I ask an honest question for you Mariners fans:

Why is your best hitter hitting 2nd?

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:02 PM PDT reply actions

OK, but what does that have to do with putting Branyan behind him?

If anyone could benefit from Branyan’s protection, it’s Beltre, and Branyan would hit with more runners on base in the 3rd and cleanup position…not trying to be adversarial, I’m on an opposing team’s fanbase. Just seems like a waste to have Branyan behind Ichiro.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I don't think opening up the hole is enough of a plus to lose out on Branyan's at-bats in run-productive situations.

I believe protection does exist, Ask any Yankee fan about how Texiera did with and without Arod in the lineup.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Try this:

Texiera, one of the best offenssive first basemen in the game was hitting below 200 while Arod was out of the lineup.

Since Arod got back, he’s been hitting 400 and homers like there’s no tomorrow.

Again, I’m not a Mariner fan, but Arod and Tex are the Bombers’ best hitters.

I just can’t imagine hitting Arod or Tex in the two-hole position the way the Mariners do, that’s all, that’s all.

Is Branyan hitting #2 a quirky thing or does he usually hit 3 and 4?

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously

that’s a terrible thing to draw a conclusion from. You are convincing yourself something is true based on anecdotal, at best, evidence.

by Matthew on Jun 7, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

All statistics are in a sense anecdotal because they can never tell the whole story

But it’s a fact that pitchers will pitch around in certain situations if they have that kind of leeway in a given lineup; pitching to weaker hitters to avoid the stronger ones.

It’s one of the reasons Pujols has been considered among the finsest hitters if not the finest hitter in the game; not just because of his run-production but because he hits in a weak lineup with no protection.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

You are arguing with an engineer

Your job is to give us the statistics and we draw practical considerations from them for real-world application.

I don’t want to fight, but please don’t use status; just argue on merits, I’ll recognize them for what they are.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, I'm an engineer too!

I am not appealing to status. I am just trying to inform you that your basis for deciding what constitutes statistical evidence is, to put it bluntly, laughable.

by Matthew on Jun 7, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Laughable? Not exactly a cordial dialogue we're having.

Not all engineering is based on statistical evidence. You look at the datasheets and specifications and an experienced engineer can make roundabout estimations on what could and should work. But that still can’t compare with what actually happens in the field with your product because, as any engineer understands: Statistics lie.

That is an iron-clad law in engineering.

You’ve heard of the engineer who was too busy looking at average windspeeds while building a bridge to notice that the data didn’t include PEAK windspeeds for possible hurricanes that had never occurred before right?

Not everything is in the statistical Nyquist plot.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I tried.

I did. I honestly put a good forth effort here.

by Matthew on Jun 7, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

There are varying degrees of anecdotal-ness

At best saying “Look, Texeira hit .200 without A-Rod and .400 with him!” is a very weak correlation. There are a lot of reasons Texeira could’ve started the season slowly which are much more likely to be true than anything having to do with “protection”. Bad luck, for one.

by OlSalty on Jun 7, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

If it were true, we'd see it in larger sample sizes than a two-month span for one player.

And that player has always hit far worse in April than he does the rest of the season, anyway.

by Teej on Jun 7, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

He feels comfortable there, I guess.

Here’s the story. This is his first seaons playing full-time – no one’s really given him a chance until now.

Of course, your three best hitters should be hitting 1, 2, and 4, so there’s nothing wrong with putting Branyan there in terms of lineup optimization.

by Decatur on Jun 7, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

It's our latest lineup plan. Ichiro, Branyan, pray.

Got really tired of Ichiro getting a hit, then getting left on base.

by Heydude on Jun 7, 2009 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd prefer to see him cleanup or 3rd

5th was just ridiculous, 2nd seems a bit extreme in the other direction. But hey, I’m not a major league manager.

Ichiro-Branyan-Beltre

Now that Beltre’s actually hitting, I absolutely love our 1-3.

by katal on Jun 7, 2009 2:43 PM PDT reply actions

Well, Beltre certainly is getting alot of production at-bats according to your guys' stats.

But your lineup is pretty thin with Griffey behind him…not much of a chance he’ll get….well, he does get hit; hit by the ball.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Put your best hitters high in the order because they're going to get more at-bats.

Worrying about protection this much is ridiculous. Good hitters hit, and if the pitcher doesn’t want to pitch to him, then he gets on base and is productive anyway.

by Teej on Jun 7, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

But with a singles hitter in front of Branyan,

he has nothing to drive in and you can’t rely on your 7-9 hitters to get on base all that often;

You don’t have the lineup that our Yankees do with threats up and down the hitting order….

It makes little sense to have Branyan hitting second and getting about 66% of the production chances that Beltre gets in the # 3 position.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

This is the third time I've linked this for you to read:
Because we care, [Beyond the Boxscore] would like to remind everyone that lineups are pretty overrated. Believe it or not, the difference between an optimized lineup and a typical, mildly foolish one you’ll see MLB teams use is only about one win over 162 games. It’s obviously worth getting right, but not any more than realizing Troy Percival shouldn’t be your closer…

by Decatur on Jun 7, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

As has been stated before the concept of protection in a lineup has been debunked

and I personally am not really a big believer in traditional lineup roles.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 7, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll leave that alone, but

How about giving your cleanup hitter a chance to cleanup?

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

You have mid 350 OBAs on your team;

granted you don’t ahve as many of them as we do, but Gutierrez is a good candidate it seems.

Center Fielder?

I guess he has speed.

One of you guys mentioned you wanted the hole opened for a left-hander: ok, so drop Ichiro to #2 and make Gutierrez leadoff (that breaks up the lefties of Branyan and Ichiro).

Gutierrez, Ichiro, Beltre and Branyan.

That’s one alternative.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

It doesn't

I’m a Yankee fan who can’t stand good assets going to waste.

You’re a big-cap team.

But your management could be better.

by Terrekain on Jun 7, 2009 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Traditional lineup roles like cleanup, #3, etc are dumb.

He is the second best hitter on the team and is getting the second most PAs. This arrangement is good.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 7, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

It would only make sense to drop him to cleanup if we had more consistent guys to precede him.

If we had Randy Winn and John Olerud 2001 to put in front of him, be my guest.

Lineup order makes at most 10 to 15 runs of difference over the course of a season – the difference between, say, 750 and 760-65 runs – and almost always much less in practical terms.
