Even crazier...

…he pitched 1/3 an inning and gave up 5 runs. 5 runs on FOUR homers.

Proof that no average joe can just come in and pitch professionally. Freaking batting practice, man.

I was also surprised that the game was started by Nathan Adcock. Of course he only lasted for the first 8 runs.

Finally, both teams combined for 18 runs in the final two innings. What the hell.

Man, our High-A affiliate sucks!

I quit this fucking team.

Seriously, though, that’s a high score.

Awaiting the day I catch a Russell Branyan foul ball. I will make love to it.

They won the first half title for the first time in twelve years :\

In a game which featured 51 runs and 58 hits,

Joe Dunigan went 0-5 and was the ONLY starter on either side not to have a multi-hit game. But on the good new side, Maverick James McOwen went 2-6 with a single and a HR to extend his hitting streak to 36 games. His infield single in the 1st inning (Mavs already down by 8 runs) broke the California League record of 35 games.

Oooh, oooh, I wanna know too!

I’ve always heard the problem was that he can’t hit, but he appears to be hitting pretty well right now (that or getting Mariners bullpen lucky)

Really?

(whistles)

I think rdave covered a good amount of it, but I think I can add more.

You know Kuo-hui Lo? The rarely mentioned other outfielder in High Desert because you can apparently slug .538 there and be a total non-prospect? I can see them as being in a similar order of prospects, specifically the tweener outfielder.

Lo hasn’t played center that often. He’s flashed a little more power this season, but his footspeed and his batting eye are not great. The market is not huge for a right-handed hitting corner outfielder who can hit 20 doubles, 10 triples or so (I believe the Cal League exaggerates those), and 15 dingers.

McOwen has more raw speed and a better batting eye (walks twice as much, strikes out maybe a third less). He also has a few more outfield assists from what I remember, but I could be wrong on that one. Last year he was one of the few players in the farm system who stole thirty bases, not that he was great it or anything, but this year he’s on pace for about ten. Coupled with his inability to get PT in center (Gillies is pretty good), that and the [ever so] slightly diminished power output is damaging his status as a prospect. In any other circumstance, his line would look good, but he’s turning into an average reliant hitter limited to a corner, whereas before his offensive package was worse but he could play in center.

A friend of mine threw out the comp of Randy Winn for McOwen, perhaps the early Randy Winn or a poor man’s version of the early Saunders before the recent power renaissance. I think that’s fair, but handedness aside, I don’t see him as being particularly interesting UNLESS he can also play center now and then, and that he’s not even getting time out there even as a courtesy is enough to make me not want to talk him up more.

I reserve the right to be wrong if this newly opened stance allows for more offense than we’re accustomed to seeing out of him, but I would really like to see him in center now and then.

Not really

McOwen was a 6th rounder in 07. He played for the Mavs last year with a 263/324/392 line which is below average for High Desert hit happy home field and the league. He started slowly this year but has been on fire for the 5 weeks. Just remember that his current line (335/393/455) probably wouldn’t translate as well to AA so he still has a bit to do in order to impress.

It should also be noted that he’s 24 and repeating the league so he needs to do more of the same to get noticed, Hopefully he’ll can make something of this super streak. He does hit left handed so he’s got that going for him, but unfortunately he can’t play SS or 3B so I bet he’s pretty much off the radar in terms of the Major League club right now.
