If the Isles take Hedman, all hell is going to break loose.
The Lightning have to take Taveras, who they don’t want, and latest rumor is that they’ll trade him. By golly that’ll be interesting.

Speaking of trades:
Toronto and Boston almost had a trade set up but it fell apart when the teams got confused at to which first round pick was being included. Typical, Toronto.
And Sens GM re: Heatley: “Right now, it’s dead”.

And apparently, Chris Pronger was just dealt to Philadelphia.
Whooo-boy. Pronger and Emery on the same team!
by Matthew on Jun 26, 2009 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pronger for Lupul, Sbisa and 2 1st rd picks.
Christ.

Wait, he's not going anywhere?

Still likely to be traded
just not as likely as before.

Thank God that didn't happen.
Taveras is awesome, but we needed a Dman something awful.
Figured the Rangers would sniff around…there was rumor they were trying to get into the top 10 for whatever reason. After the Senators missed out on the guy they wanted (picked my Toronto), I figured they would of traded down to the Rangers.

Bettman gets booed at his own damn draft.
Love it.

Is this whole thing going to be in French?
by Matthew on Jun 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It was annoying having all those speeches.
Seemed like everyone was babbling. Colorado and Atlanta were really the only ones who made it short and got to the pick.

Another trade.
Isles dumping 2nd rd picks to Columbus to move from 26 to 16.
That 26th pick went from SJ to Tampa to Ottawa to NYI and now to Columbus.

Official: Columbus trades picks 16 and 77 to NY for picks 26, 37, 62 and 92

Is the NHL draft like the NHL draft
where you’re actually better off stock piling 2nd through 4th round picks?

So then
why would they stock pile so many picks?

Because they only drop 10 spots and pick up a ton?
And it’s a deep draft this year.

I see
I’m completely in the dark on how the NHL draft works and such aside from the basics. Or what the strategies or thought processes are.

I don't pay attention to the NBA,
but a co-worker said teams were dumping picks to save money. Will there be similar concerns in the NHL or is it healthier than the NBA right now?
by Sec 108 on Jun 27, 2009 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The NBA is in serious, serious trouble.
The NHL is in trouble, but nowhere near as bad as far as I’ve heard because the lockout helped keep salaries down.

And the Leafs just took Kadri.
Oh shit, Murray is pissed.

Coming from Seattle sports interest, and the general attention they get paid from the national media.
It is still weird to me when people talk on and on about the Senators.

Speaking of the Sens, how did you, Jeff and Graham all become fans of theirs?
by jimmylauderdale on Jun 26, 2009 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I became a fan because when I started liking sports in late 1992, I saw them at the bottom of the standings and felt bad for them
I was seven.

"and felt bad for them"
Some things never change…

Mine is somewhat similar.
I always liked Colorado growing up, but adopted the Sabres after the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals. Felt horrible for them. I was 13.
I added Tampa Bay as my 3rd team solely because Martin St Louis is my favorite player.
by Slica on Jun 27, 2009 2:44 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh man I wish I were home to join you guys for this.
Im excited. My 3 teams sucked balls this year.
Tampa Bay got exactly who I wanted, as did Colorado. And Buffalo made me happy later on.
Im also glad that Lecavalier and Heatley didn’t get moved. I cant imagine them with someone else right now. Surprised Bouwmeester wasn’t moved (and he gives me hell on NHL 09).
Oh, and fuck Chris Pronger.
by Slica on Jun 27, 2009 2:43 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Be surprised no longer.
Bouwmeester to Calgary for essentially a third round pick.
by ningwers on Jun 27, 2009 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, but
He takes up a lot of cap space and they are crunched once they sign him at 8 mil per year. Get ready for the Flames to drop some names and not add much more.

I've heard Phaneuf is on the block.
Can I interest them in a talented left winger?

How did he have pretty much the same price as Brian Boyle
by Jeff on Jun 27, 2009 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not so much that he has the same price as Brian Boyle
as four days of exclusive negotiating rights with him has the same price as Brian Boyle.

Splitting single syllable names should be avoided as a general rule.

I can't believe they chant Let's Go Du-ucks instead of Go Ducks Go
by Jeff on Jun 27, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's even sadder
They could just as easily go with “Let’s Go Ducks” like the Caps do.
by ningwers on Jun 27, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What's weirder is that even Calgary chants Let's Go Fla-ames
by Jeff on Jun 27, 2009 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's because it's Calgary.

Also.
I found it amusing that Toronto picked a guy who grew up as a huge fan of the Canadiens.

Oh, fuck me.
Let’s pick more defense minded d-men…because we don’t have any of those. Just like last year and the year before, etc.
I think my team has Bowden’s disease, and we have to collect no-offense, no bash d-men.
