Few of the MLB announcers say things like:

Portland's a basketball city

Always has been. Even if they got a major league franchise, they don’t really have the population to support it.

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I am and I'm a Beavers season ticket holder

and if they move to Lents I will no longer be a season ticket holder. I live in NoPo and prefer to take TriMet to games, and if we were to do that from our house it would be an hour (and at least two buses, until they get the Green Line finished) each way. Not going to happen. I am not a Portland native, so I don’t understand the attachment to Memorial Coliseum – tear that obsolete pile of junk down, build a 9000 seat ballpark there, and you’ve got year-round traffic to the Rose Quarter, just like the Blazers want.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I've never heard of Lents - I don't think it was a neighborhood 10 years ago. :/

I was at the Coliseum a few years back for a friend’s comic show, and I can’t believe how terrible it looks now. Depressing. We used to listen to Blazers games on the radio when I was little and they played there, and now it’s just a giant, run-down…thing. :/
Then again, I’m sure there are still a lot of people whining about how “ugly” the Rose Quarter is, too.

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Lents is down on 205 at about Sunnyside Rd I think

82nd and Foster is probably the main intersection, and then it heads east and a bit north from there, kinda along 205.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh

Yeah, I never heard it called that – I grew up in Canby, just south, and lived in the city proper after I got out of college for about 10 years or thereabouts. That area was just called the Foster neighborhood – and 82nd is already sketchy enough without adding more traffic and etc. I hope they figure something out…

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

And the main people whining about the dereliction of the Rose Quarter are the Blazers

because it gets no business when it’s not basketball season. Which makes me wonder why they’re opposed to putting a summer-sports venue in there; they want to build an “entertainment village”, which nobody will go to because why leave a cool neighborhood for a bunch of expensive restaurants?

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, no;

The people in Portland HATED that thing when it was built. Everyone was bitching about how it “ruined the skyline”. Yeah, the crappy skyline by Lloyd Center. Pffft!
I agree, if they want a park, they might already have a decent foundation for such a thing on the Coliseum grounds….just seems like a waste.

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Now people are bitching because the Memorial Coliseum is architecturally significant

they claim it’s a good example of Modernist design – which it actually is, I suppose, but that’s no reason to keep it standing when it’s functionally obsolete and becoming derelict.

I don't think so, not that I can tell.

I just see old photos at the Kingston that say “The 1937 Lucky Beavers” and whatnot. It would be cooler if they were named after the beer.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm

I’ll see if I can check out any history if I wind up going down there. I know they renovated it, maybe they did something nice on the inside for the timeline of the team. I used to live in two different apartments about 3 blocks and across the street from that place back in the 90s – it sucked so bad trying to find parking after work on game days. Seems like a weird place for a stadium.

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

The stadium predated all the apartments and stuff though

That stadium has been around since about 1910 I think. There’s not much to it on the inside, you won’t find much history-wise except a few old snapshots; they did renovate it but it’s there to serve three sports and a bunch of high school games, so it’s not really specific to any one of them. I’m not sure where one would go to find a good history of the stadium or the Beavers team.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Heh

I’m pretty sure the place I lived across the street was built in like 1856 or something; man, what a shithole – the place upstairs used to be a brothel. Score!
I kid, kind of.
What’s the other sport? Baseball, soccer, …?

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

Beavers baseball, Timbers soccer, PSU football

Post-expensive-renovation, PGE Park has to get all the revenue it can.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess so

Just based on what you know about things now, do you think the MLS team will work in Portland?

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

From what I know which is not much I would say yes

The Timbers draw about 6500 people a game at this point, and the Timbers Army supporters group is huge, passionate, and vocal. All this happens with no real advertising or promotion; the MLS marketing push would really make a huge difference and get a ton of people to buy tickets. I don’t think they’d get the 26K a night that the Sounders get, but if they can get into the 15-20K/game range they’ll be a success.

Which is why PGE has to be renovated – there’s almost no way that stadium can handle that many people at this point. I dread going to the AAA All-Star Game in a way because it’ll be a nightmare with that many people – the lines for everything will be hideous.

Nice Guys Finish Third - My semantics are a waste of time.

by pdb on Jun 15, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That kicks ass!

I saw a news special on a channel up here about the Timbers Army, they aired it before the Sounders season opened up here. It looked like people were pretty crazy about the game, but they never showed wide shots of the stadium, so while they were loud, I wasn’t sure how many of them were actually there.

~The Official LookoutLanding Poster Who Dreams Of Doing Naughty Naughty Things To Russell Branyan~

by section331 on Jun 15, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

They take over at least one entire section during games

there’s probably about 1000 of them all told. It adds an awesome element to the games.

I don't know if there are a thousand ECS

But the GA is super loud, and the rest of the stadium follows suit, so it turns into this giant wave of chants around the stadium. I look forward to our Portlander overlords. :D

It's true.

He used to work as a surveyor or something, but he decided to put that aside and see if he could make it in baseball. He made his debut when he was 28 or so and they’ve kept pushing him to see what he was capable of. It’s a shame that his fastball’s pretty straight and he has little in the way of other offerings, because it’s an awesome story.
