Guillermo Quiroz Recalled
From Baker
The Mariners have opted to call up journeyman minor leaguer Guillermo Quiroz, a onetime top prospect with Toronto, from Class AA to fill the void left by Kenji Johjima's injury. Johjima goes to the 15-day DL and pitcher Cesar Jimenez is transferred to the 60-day DL.
Well, that was an odd one. I would have put it somewhere around the third or fourth most likely transaction to have happened to replace Johjima on the roster. It's been a long time since Quiroz has done anything positive at the plate, but one thing he does bring is a somewhat patient (compared to our other catchers) approach.

Who are you? What do you want? Who are you? What do you want?
Once again I feel bad about having a guy land on our 25 man roster from inside the organisation who I have never heard of. I understand why they didn’t call up Adam Moore because holy crap that would have been exciting and fuck you Gareth we won’t have you experiencing any excitment from any starting Mariner catcher.
Hopefully this guy is going to go on a murderous [in a hitting the baseball with a bat, anti-pitcher context] HGH suicide rampage for the next few weeks before Kenji gets better.

Calling up Adam Moore starts his service clock early and he'd get killed by ML pitching
by Graham on May 26, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
How does the service clock work in this context?
My knowledge of it isn’t as strong as it should be. All I know is Price has been sat in the Minors for a few months due in part to service time considerations. Does it basically mean that Moore would be eligible for FA earlier if he was called up now? Or does it relate to options?

Worth noting, Quiroz carries a reputation as a good defensive guy.
So it should be interesting to see if he sucks at measurable defense.

I'm thinking more "meh".
More of a lateral move if you ask me.

A decent no-risk move
I’m somewhat surprised it wasn’t Burke, and it’s possible they’ll have trouble retaining Quiroz when it comes time to outright him back to the minors, but hey, welcome back, Guillermo.
Bad news re: Jimenez. Something’s clearly not right. On the plus side, Tyler Johnson made his debut with the Rainiers on Sunday and pitched a perfect inning (on 8 pitches)… so if we need a lefty reliever, he’s getting close. Of course, he’s not on the 40 man either.
Here’s Johnson:

Jimenez
He was nearing 60 days anyway, so the move — by itself — is not necessarily bad news, just clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. The silence about his progress, however, may be bad news.

Yes, the fact that he had an awful appearance for Tacoma and since then seems to just hang out in the Sea. bullpen
leads me to think there isn’t really a rehab ‘program’ – or at least not one that’s going to lead to another rehab appearance anytime soon.

No, that's true.
Still, a ~ league average reliever capable of going mult. innings isn’t a terrible thing. It’s clearly not something this team really needs, but Jimenez could add some value some day.
If the team needs a LOOGY, obviously Johnson would be a much, much better option.

So...uh...what happened to Clement?
Is he just not ready yet or what?
by Mariners116 on May 26, 2009 3:01 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I have almost forgotton how awful it was to watch Clement last year.
That is a testament to Rob Johnson I guess.

Injured, organization hates him.
Not sure which is the reason, but it is one of those two.

I didn't say it was a good thing.
However, it’s not like Quiroz has any real history of offensive success anywhere. That does come with the caveat that he somehow has only logged 258 PA since 2004, based on what Fangraphs tracks.

258 MLB PAs. Plenty of MiLB ones.

He was with Baltimore last year and Texas the year before that.

Bavasi claimed him on waivers
as an out of options guy at the end of spring training, put him on the roster for a couple days, and then put him through waivers a few days later. He cleared and was outrighted to Tacoma.
Sadly, that might have been the cleverest move of the Bavasi regime.

For some reason I assumed that he was just around between then and now
Despite having read the stat sheet showing him with Texas/Oklahoma in 2007 about 20 minutes ago

I wonder if Wak will still insist on batting Johnson in a slot other than ninth?
This has puzzled me all year.
by Rudy4three on May 26, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I guess nothing. Just figuring that maybe since Johnson only plays like once
a week, Wak didn’t want to move other guys out of their usual batting order spots.
Now that Johnson is the #1 catcher for two weeks, hopefully he’s batting 9th every day

Maybe they want Burke
to stay in Tacoma to help mentor Moore. That’s the thought I’m sticking with.

What a great month for Jamie Burke
First he gets DFA’d and nobody wants him.
So we send him down to AAA, where he’s inevitably sitting around waiting for Clement to get better so he can get kicked somewhere else.
Then another guy above him gets hurt, but instead of bringing him up to be the backup catcher, he’s passed over for the guy doing his job one level down.
I’d almost feel bad for him… Almost.
