…maybe they could use him as a pinch hitter every now and then. It seems like if Wak’s going to be a stickler for platoon advantage, he ought to take Sweeney out late in games when he’s facing a RHP.
Why are they putting so much pressure on Balentien by putting him in the cleanup spot?

When we got him for Lou Pinella, he was under a lot of pressure to be all-star material. He was decent, but never outstanding… he was better once he left Seattle (maybe the park just depressed his numbers.)

Well, things like clutch hits
I felt like I’d lost my innocence when I found out here that “Clutch” doesn’t exist

This is debatable.
They way I think of it, clutch hitting obviously exists, but the ability to be a clutch hitter might not. Someone might have a year where they get a ton of huge hits (Ortiz in 2004), and he’s labeled “clutch” for life, even if the rest of his career he hits pretty much the same in clutch situations as he does in low-pressure ones.

Is this because the sample size is now big enough?
I don’t doubt that clutch hitting (and the opposite) resides in some people. it’s just hard to pinpoint it, and it gets emotional and often illogical when you try to.
I think to discount the notion of clutch hitting is to discount human psychology
but at the same time being a good clutch hitter doesn’t morph you into Superman if there’s a runner on second and two outs.

I spent the late 90s being in love with baseball before the entire sabremetrics thing reached public consciousness (Moneyball came out in 2002, right when I lost interest in it). But I’d been in the goddamned dark ages about what actually wins baseball games that whole time, and I would’ve enjoyed the game immensely more if I could have actually told someone why Mike Cameron, my favorite player of all time, was a borderline MVP candidate, which he was during his time in Seattle.
It all comes down to coming as closest as possible to learning what TRULY wins baseball games.

For example, Bavasi ought to have investigated why Carlos Silva was so successful, and to what degree said success was affected significantly by external, uncontrollable factors; in other words, how effective were Silva’s raw pitching skills?

Their problem lay in their choice of statistics. Bavasi accredited Silva’s low ERA and low walk rates to his success. But he seemed to miss that the guy couldn’t buy a strikeout. And that the M’s defense was extremely sub-par, while Silva was a contact pitcher.

I started following this stuff closely about three months ago.
And I’ve only gotten a handle on tRA in the past couple of weeks.

tRA was created by Graham. StatCorner.com has a good explanation of it. It really makes a lot of sense if you think about it. It tries to get rid of a lot of the defensive context and just look at what a pitcher can control (strikeouts, walks, line drives, groundballs, and so on).
It’s a pretty saber-happy site.

He most certainly is.
His tRA+ was 130 last year and he was worth between 5.3 wins. Fangraphs has him at 3.8 wins last year, as measured by FIP. Either way, that’s a pretty legit ace season. He’s only been screwed by the home run rate this year, but his strikeout numbers are still good.

Despite being a 1 run ballgame, 1 out and 2 speedy runners on had never felt less of a chance
with Beltre and Sweeney coming up.
Fuck it, why can’t Guti hit 2nd and Branyan 3rd for gosh sakes? And Griffey 4th, regardless of the matchup.
And Wlad’s sucking should get Chavez and his good glove a little more playing time. Sure Chavez may have a weak bat, but Wlad hasn’t been doing anything recently. (looks like he’s in a major funk).
In general, you should put your fifth best hitter in the #3 spot.
Per The Book. And hot and cold streaks have almost no predictive value and aren’t reflections of true talent level. Wlad might not be good for cleanup, but he’s not really as bad as he’s been the past few games.

I have no sympathy or connection to the lead actress in this movie and it is unbearable to watch a film where the main character has no personality. This movie was boring, treacherous to sit through and is embarrassing for all parties involved in the creation of this utter waste of time. I am always glad to see horrible movies fail, this is no exception. It proves you actually need talent to make some money in the movie industry.
Don’t waste your time. This should also be rated PG-13, there really isn’t anything sexual about it, just a few boring people talking to each other.

Randy Johnson is a true HOF's.
