The Great Bullpen Experiment Of 2009

Coming into the season, the Mariners put together a bullpen composed in large part of hard-throwing righties with inconsistent or below-average command. The idea was that relievers are volatile commodities, and you never know when a guy with good stuff will go all Matt Thornton and suddenly start throwing strikes. With that in mind, here's a look at how the four guys who fit the profile have done so far:

Name 2008 Strike% 2009 Strike% 2008 Zone% 2009 Zone%
Aardsma 59.4 60.2 46.7 48.7
Lowe 61.4 61.2 47.9 49.1
Batista 57.5 59.5 47.4 48.5
Morrow 64.6 59.2 51.9 41.7

David Aardsma hasn't picked it up. Mark Lowe hasn't picked it up. Miguel Batista hasn't picked it up. And while Brandon Morrow was good a year ago, so far injuries and time off have taken a toll on his command, to the point where we can't yet trust him to locate his pitches when he needs to.

Of the four guys with good fastballs and iffy command, we haven't yet seen anyone figure it out. We still might, of course - it's only early May - but to date the bullpen has been every bit as uncomfortable to watch as many expected, with its 5.3 BB/9 standing as the third-worst in baseball.

Shawn Kelley, by the way, was throwing strikes at a 68.2% clip before getting hurt. With the big league bullpen always teetering on the brink of disaster and Josh Fields pitching like a crazy person in AA, we're going to miss Kelley something terrible while he's gone.

Both, sort of

K’ing over 30%, walking about 20%, 11 runs yielded in 9IP, but only 7 hits.

So….another guy with amazing stuff and poor command.

Speaking of pitching like a crazy person

Jason Vargas’ gameday photo is….interesting

On reason I hope the Capone nickname catches on for Vargas

is that when Vargas does well, we can say “CA-PWNED!”

Real strikes

Zone% is how often they pitched within the zone boundaries.

Does that conflict with other stat gatherers?

I beg your pardon, being new to the stat side of things and all. But I would assume that what the umpire calls would be the “official” stats correct? Or is the Zone% stat the only one that is based only off of the tracer?

Strike% will reflect what the umpire calls (and also what gets swung at)

Zone% will reflect the actual strike zone, presumably determined by either an observer or PITCHf/x (or something similar to PITCHf/x).

Command vs Control

I need to get some basic definitions down, before I can add anything of substance. I think I was under the impression that:
Control = throwing strikes.
Command = throwing pitches that look like balls to the hitter and strikes to the umpire.
Is this correct in this context, or do I need to think differently about these terms?

Waiting to spit out the "Doublemint Twins".

Control = throwing strikes

Command = throwing to a specific location

Thank you for the clarification.

Thanks.

I get the terms confused as well.

Used in a sentence and to paraphrase Jeff:

Jarrod Washburn has great command and is vastly underrated.”
