Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

4/9: Open Game Thread, Part 2

Suffice to say that a good portion of Washburn's salary this year is going to go to buying other people dinner.

Thanks asshole.

Now we’re going to lose it 2-1 on five consecutive 9th inning Brandon Morrow walks.

by Gihyou on Apr 9, 2009 11:36 AM PDT reply actions

I was going to comment on the Gameday report of Wash's average fastball velocity

I think it is reporting the average velocity of his average fastball. At release he’s around 88, but at the plate, it’s down to low 80s, so they could be reporting the average velocity of the ball during its flight to the plate.

by ubelmann on Apr 9, 2009 11:36 AM PDT reply actions

Too fast

he’s topped out at an end speed of 82.

by Jeff Sullivan on Apr 9, 2009 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

It depends how they take the average

Since the ball is accelerating, the average velocity is not the simple average of the beginning and end velocity.

by ubelmann on Apr 9, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Trying to emphasize that the commonly reported velocity is the release velocity?

I don’t know, but it makes more sense to me that it is working in a strange way than it is just spitting out nonsense.

by ubelmann on Apr 9, 2009 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Do not take them with alcohol unless you really want to get fucked up. If you do too much of either, you run the chance of not waking up.

I'm not entirelyconvinced that this is true.

I think that the added offense and flexibility (not to mention the fact that Swisher is a pretty good defender) is worth putting Jakubauskas in the rotation.

by Aaron Campeau on Apr 9, 2009 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

How about taking home a sackful of prospects for the future?

I’m not going to bring up packaging Wash as a salary dump, that ship sailed last year.

by Kermit. on Apr 9, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not convinced that the market values defense enough for that to be reasonable.

I’m all for trading Beltre (ow) if he isn’t open to signing an extension and if the M’s aren’t in contention, but unless he flips out on offense I just don’t see him bringing back a ton in return in a trade.

by Aaron Campeau on Apr 9, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Just because those teams value defense doesn't mean they'll give up more for him.

They’re all good at knowing what the market will bear. Unless you get two of them competing against each other (and I think the Rays are good at 3B for now) they’re still in the driver’s seat.

by Aaron Campeau on Apr 9, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a good point.

However, if they properly value Beltre and want him on their team, GMZ is still the decider of the price. Even if the general market asks for less, they know what his actual value should be and should therefore be willing to pay more if they want his services.

by abender20 on Apr 9, 2009 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh man those guys got some farm kids, maybe swing by New York for some cash.

Why am I fixated on NY here? I love the hot corner and good 3rd basemen, and hate NY. I think I’m just whistling past the graveyard by talking about Beltre to NY.

by Kermit. on Apr 9, 2009 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Is it?

Who do we have ready to take Washburn’s place? We have a dozen guys who can play the OF and 1B.

This may change in 3 months, but right now Washburn is more valuable to the team than Swisher would be. But this trade isn’t going to happen anyway.

Yeah, there were several flyballs out in centerfield that would have been basehits in years past.

Gutz is amazing. Endy is amazing. Every line drive hit out there, I feel like they are going to be caught. Washburn just benefited from the improved defense. We would have lost that game if it wasn’t for the defense.

Any links to CF highlights?

by Kermit. on Apr 9, 2009 1:06 PM PDT reply actions

The plays I saw Gutz make were not spectacular or dramatic enough to make any highlight reel.

But they were spectacular and dramatic because he took away like four base hits with his range. He actually overran a line drive in the gap; that is how good he is.

by Wilder. on Apr 9, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

That I did.

Just saw the highlight. I had the entire game on while in my classes, but I obviously didn’t see every out. What an amazing catch. And he still took another 3-4 hits away during the rest of the game.
