If the whole Aumont thing weren't such a wiener of a story I wouldn't have had to fake this smile.

The hell with yesterday's news. To 2009, and to finishing as king of this mountain of poop people call a division.

Not necessarily.

So if my analysis is correct, and this is in fact unbearded Jeff, it would not surprise me for him to lean towards the opposite instinct in liking a team that will make him happy as opposed to the masochism that is Bearded Jeff’s interests.

Its probably better that you drank right after running.

Usually the body continues burning calories after working out, since your heart rate was probably still up. Do you go to a track and run, or do you just jog around the neighborhood?

by Fin on Apr 6, 2009 3:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Treadmill.

I’ve lost 15 pounds, but I’m still a bit chubby. Plus, I can run more on the treadmill—the routes around my neighborhood are only about a mile. That, and I never am really ready to do my running and working out until about Midnight. I have the worst sleeping schedule imaginable.

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Apr 6, 2009 3:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I have a love/hate relationship with the treadmill.

I love jogging on it, but then if the next day I always end up with shin splints or something of the sort. I also prefer going to the gym at night, but I am usually dragged to the gym in the morning by my girlfriend.

I think I’ve fucked up my sleeping schedule for the whole week by staying up this late tonight, but I am unusually excited for opening day. Maybe its because Spring Training was too damn long this year.

by Fin on Apr 6, 2009 3:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Indeed, spring training was quite agonizing this year. More than usual, it seems.

Seriously. I love the WBC, but they’ve gotta find a better time for it.

My treadmill was given to me by the grandparents for the low low price of free, so while it only goes to 6 MPH, I can’t complain. The best way to enjoy your time on a treadmill is to listen to music, watch TV, or, as nerdy as it sounds, play a game of Madden…it takes your mind off of how tired you are, instead making you focus on football strategy. Plus, it lasts like 45 minutes or more, so you get plenty of time in on it. Plus, when you’ve got the treadmill sitting right there, it really encourages you to work out. I’m lazy, so I can honestly say that without it, I’d still be at 192…

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Apr 6, 2009 3:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Man only 6 mph, couldn't do that.

I usually am at 7 mph, 7.5 if I am feeling really pumped. But then again, could be the cause of my legs getting fucked up from using it. So then I am stuck using the elliptical, which isn’t that bad. But you are right about the treadmill being right there. The hardest part about the gym is motivating myself to go. Once I am there, I can kick my ass pretty hard, but its getting there that gets me.

I really liked the WBC, but I agree with you man, I don’t know if its worth delaying the regular season. Even if its only by about a week, it felt like forever.

by Fin on Apr 6, 2009 3:58 AM PDT up reply actions

6 MPH is fine for me at this point.

My stamina is a lot better now, but back when I was started I was chubby looking, but extremely out of shape. I cut out fast food and soda about four months ago, figuring I was going to enjoy beer, I had to choose one or the other. I now only use soda as a mixer when drinking. As it is, I generally walk at around 4 MPH to start a game of Madden, move it up to 5 at half time, and then run .50-1.0 miles after the game at 6 MPH…considering I started last month at around 2, moved up to 3, then ran .25 miles at the full 6 MPH speed, I think I’m doing ok. I definitely feel better now that I eat well in addition to all this. I can’t believe how I got by feeling the way I did. I’m shooting for 160-165, and I’m at 177 now…I can’t imagine how good I’ll feel after losing the next 15, considering how good I feel after losing the first 15.

Seriously, they should start the WBC earlier or something, and just have the season start on time if they refuse to do a mini-tournament instead of an all-star break.

I will open my first “Bangor Foursquare Tripel Play” Belgian-Style homebrew that’s been aging since I bottled it at the end of the season last year.

Here’s to a fantastic season, of madness, joy, and baseball. Oh, and Felix hitting another grand slam!

I'll be angry when Aumont is called up

For now, I’ll hope that either Z knows something about Philipe’s health that we don’t, or that Baker got the story wrong.

It’s opening day. Being that .500 is our likely zenith, and that by Felix’s 10th start we’ll probably be complaining that he’s still throwing too many fastballs, today is quite possibly going to be the highpoint of the season. Enjoy it!

My biggest problem with the "Aumont is a reliever" thing

Is why didn’t GMZ instead at least try to trade him for two of another team’s better bullpen arms? Surely a top starting pitching prospect is worth, say, Manny Parra and Seth McClung.

I'm not stylin' any cool threads.

and Zduriencik was just on KJR, harshin’ my buzz.

When asked about Aumont being "destined to be a bullpen guy, making it 3 high draft choices to the ‘pen" said he’s a big guy, very aggressive, very powerful– spent a lot of time on the DL last summer, pitched in the WBC, sat down as a staff and looked at him, and thought it was where he was best suited, based on his injury history, his size, his personality, his pitches.

FWIW, Zduriencik says that when they told Aumont they were going to put him in the pen, his response was: "That’s what I thought I was going to be anyhow."

It looks like the Mets-Reds game doesn't have Pitch/FX data.

But the other ones do. They’re introducing a Gameday Premium, but from what I can tell Pitch/FX will still be available on the free version.

by Teej on Apr 6, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

From Sports Business Journal:
MLBAM for several years has bulked up its functionality for the in-game tracker, including the addition of Pitch f/x, which graphically depicts the type, speed and break of every pitch. The latest, pay-level version, priced at $19.95 for the season, adds scouting-level data such as hot and cold zones for pitchers and batters, player tendencies and matchup histories.

GameDay Premium also will include real-time video highlights, which have been shifted this year from the free version to this offering, and audio streaming.

Link.

by Teej on Apr 6, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I panicked when I saw the 07 version on the Mets game

what’s not clear from their little popup is just how much you will get for free from here on. I don’t care about the audio, and I really don’t care about batter/pitcher matchups. But I want those p/fx numbers.

They seem to have a really good host in Salk, who in one segment called bullshit on callers and other hosts bitching about Erik Bedard and criticized the FO for demoting Jeff Clement instead of putting him on the ML roster.

Just finished a few sims with most recent rosters...

MLB ’09 has the Mariners always starting hot and then tanking in the mid-summer. Median wins: 77.

The last season I simmed had them start 33-15 only to finish 9 games under .500.

But the game also has the White Sox kicking ass…so, who knows.

by esoteric on Apr 6, 2009 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

No, it really wasn't.

Don’t get me wrong, the M’s were/are a much better team on paper than the Nats (though with Clement heading to AAA, Morrow to the pen, and Griffey to the outfield every now and then, that’s taken a hit). But their relative levels of hope were pretty damn similar.

I will happily consume my shoe if the M’s come anywhere close to contention for anything except last place (jockeying with the Rangers) this year. Doesn’t mean I’ll be thrilled (and full of delicious leathery shoe) if they make a run, of course, but still.
