Corcoran hits DL, Vargas Recalled
Right-handed reliever Roy Corcoran is being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained neck. The injury is retroactive to April 29th, meaning he's eligible to come off on May 14.
A strained neck? Well, okay then. We have a lefty now in the pen

I'm just happy they were able to get him off the roster without having to expose him to waivers.
Whatever works.

Did we ever figure out if he had options left?
I know there was talk during Spring Training of him being less than secure in making the bullpen out of Peoria and I feel like the local media would have tossed in a nugget about losing him to waivers on those stories.
I guess I assumed he didn't because they were going the suckitis route.
I have no idea how to find out.

He's out of options
Contract purchased in ‘03, optioned in ’03, optioned in ’04, DFA’d in ’04, contract purchased in ’06, optioned in ’06, outrighted in ’06, contract purchased in ’08, optioned in ’08
I’m not sure why he qualified for the fourth option, honestly. But, no one gets five, so he’s definitely done.

He was optioned in 2003, 2004 and 2007
So no.

Jimenez doesn't really count as a lefty.
He pitches off his changeup.
For some reason it seems like Jason Vargas has been around forever.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
There is no such thing as too much depth at any one position.
...and now I'm here
S'ok, it's hidden.
It’s certainly worthy of talking about, just I’d prefer not in here. That’s why we have fanposts.
In the comments of his USSM post,
Dave suggests that Vargas may actually be a decent back end starter with stuff similar to Washburn and better stufff (or perhaps different skills) than RRS. Is this something we should be expecting/watching for, interested in, hoping for, etc.?
...and now I'm here
I'd watch for his FB velocity, his last stint in the big leagues it was down near the mid 80s.
If it’s back to the high 80s, pushing 90, he could be of some use. I don’t know much beyond that since I don’t have scouting reports.
Welcome
I now have a reason to link to my photos of Jason Vargas before his start v. Sacto.
By the way, his FB velocity is in the high 80s, generally not touching 90. He uses his change a lot, around 80-79 or so, and he has a big slow curve that he threw once in the start I saw (73mph). Decent command, but there’s nothing eye-popping about his stuff… he does top out at a 4-5th starter.
As for what to look for, I’d want to see if he can get LHB/RHB out equally – if he’s got a slider/change working equally, or if he’s going to be slotted into the loogy role by default. Might also be interesting to see if he gets a decent velo. boost by working out of the pen… if he’s in the 90-91 range consistently, that’s something.
