Sounders' Fredy Montero Under Investigation for Stalking, Sexual Assault
Wow, that sucks:
A woman called the King County Sheriff's office this week alleging that Seattle Sounders FC soccer star Fredy Montero was stalking her, two law enforcement sources said Thursday evening.
According to a law enforcement report about the incident, the 23-year-old woman told police on March 31 that she saw Montero in a car near her home in Sammamish. The report stated that she feared for her safety because Montero allegedly had sexually assaulted her in Bellevue the week before on March 22, which she had reported to the Bellevue Police Department.
Montero did not accompany the team to Toronto for this Saturday's game. A Sounders spokesman said Montero didn't travel with the squad because of illness.
Dude, how stupid are you? Allegedly.
And here I thought this whole "Seattle soccer renaissance" might last awhile. Shit.

Seattle Times'
Jose Romero says:
I was looking into the story myself earlier this evening, and the facts as far as I know them are these: Montero had not been accused of such a crime as of this evening, and no charges had been filed. He is sick with the flu and not likely to be healthy enough to play Saturday, and did not fly to Toronto with the team.
A woman reported to Bellevue police that Montero sexually assaulted her, then told the King County Sheriff’s department that he is stalking her. Sounds like an “accusation” to me.
Innocent until proven guilty
And in any case, an “accusation” in this context means one from the police, not from the women. I have no idea how this will turn out. If the police had solid evidence that Montero did commit a sexual assault on March 22 AND was stalking this women (which would make him seem a truly dangerous man), I’d imagine they’d at least officially take Montero in for questioning. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I get the nuance.
And yes, he’s innocent until proven guilty. But it’s still an accusation when an individual makes an official report to police. A woman accused him, police are investigating.
Ugly.

Sure, we assume innocence
But we can also assume stupidity for him getting embroiled in all this. :\
There's a chance he's never met this woman before though
In what sense would he have “gotten himself embroiled in it” if that’s the case?
Sure, it's possible
But don’t you think the odds of that are slim? I mean, there’s a spectrum of possibilities as far as what happened, and you have to go all the way to the extreme end of “woman he doesn’t know randomly accusing him” to say he’s played no part of this. Most atheletes don’t get accused of things like sexual assault or murder or what have you, because they’re careful about their actions and who they associate themselves with.
Thank god the soccer players are picking up the slack for the NBA.
There was almost a void in professional athletes being stupid stories.
I don't think it's a matter of NBA players not being stupid
It’s just that nobody cares about the NBA anymore.
Hmmm
The NBA is putting up phenomenal TV ratings…best in years.
Easy! Eeeeaaasy!
With the Sonics being gone there were that many fewer opportunities for “Local Professional Athlete gets a dui, accused of beating wife, cruelty to animals, and/or being mean to small children!!” stories for the local media. The only time I really care to hear about this stuff is when it’s going to effect the playing time of an athlete. It’s a regular thing for me to blacklist the media for a short stretch during the year, it’s usually because of articles like this.
No no no no no no
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no.
I hate stories like this
Let us presume innocence for a moment, because that is what we’re theoretically supposed to be doing until he’s proven guilty: Now Montero’s name will forever be associated with this accusation.
If he’s guilty, he obviously brought it upon himself. But if he’s innocent, he has to live with any lingering doubts anyone he ever meets who knows about this story might have about him. It will taint relationships he has for the rest of his life.
Is this just the acceptable risk one takes when one is a public figure? Or is it irresponsible journalism seeking to inflate page views?

Part of being a public figure
look at Mark Sanchez, dude will probably never shake the “he was accused of sexual assault” label despite no legal action coming of it.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
Depends on how big of a star he becomes.
Ray Lewis and Kobe Bryant have done a wonderful job at shaking off the murderer and rapist labels.
Which speaks very poorly of sports fans when it comes right down to it

Actually those labels are pretty much all I can think about

I have to admit
that I still think Ray Lewis got away with murder.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
And I have to admit that I think Kobe Bryant
actually nevermind.

Irresponsible journalism.
And I’m sad to see it posted here.
Typically I hate it when people state that the woman is lying.
But this seems too convienent. Really, it was Montero, the most visible of the Sounders players?
On the other hand, he’s young, he’s Latino, and he’s finding stardom. Machismo runs deep. It’s possible that he was aggressive and now it’s been blown out of proportion.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Apr 3, 2009 8:10 AM PDT reply actions
Agreed.
Whenever a story like this happens, you get the knee-jerk “she’s probably just lying for attention/money” responses, and they’re frustrating. But I can’t help but think this might be blown way out of proportion. Perhaps his courting skills could use some refining.
Honestly whether he did it or not
I don’t think it’s fair to report it to the media until charges are filed. And this applies to any public figure, because there are a lot of crazy people out there and people who want to profit from them who would make up a story. I’m not saying that this woman is doing that, but if she’s telling the truth it’s going to come to light when the police file charges anyway. If she’s lying and nothing comes of it his life is ruined just from the false accusation being made public because everyone will have that lingering doubt over whether he actually is a rapist even though he was never charged with the crime.

I mostly agree, but I think the public has become a little more conscious of false accusations since the Fatty Arbuckle days.
The Michael Irvin incident comes to mind, and it seems most recognize the Duke lacrosse guys were unfairly accused. The accusation isn’t always a life-ruiner.
The problem is the media typically doesn't issue a retraction if nothing comes from the accusation
The Duke Lacrosse players actually got to go to trial and have the details of the case publicly vetted, where it became clear the accusations were baseless. If Montero is never charged with a crime now he won’t go to trial and get a chance to clear his name and the last thing everyone will remember is that he was accused. I agree though that people are starting to catch on to this kind of shady reporting more than they used to.
Did you know that Fredy Montero is a serial killer?
He was also responsible for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, was a key element of the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror, and under one of his many pseudonyms betrayed Jesus to the Romans.
Allegedly, anyway.
Don't forget Kristallnacht
he masterminded that, you know.

It's Jeff's call, but my own two cents
is that until there are at least police charges filed against the person in question I would prefer to never see stories like this on LL.
I'll change the headline
but feel free to delete the whole thing.

The point I was making was..
Does anyone really know this guy outside of seattle or hardcore MLS fans? It’s not like he is on the cover of any paper anywhere… which is exactly what would happen if this happened to someone who was actually famous.
Innocent until proven guilty is a myth. Everyone knows that.
But I will agree, that he should be innocent until proven guilty. And reporters should lose their jobs for ruining someone’s credibility by reporting on heresay and speculation. But that isn’t reality.
How popular he is outside of Seattle isn't really relevant.
He’s a big name in Seattle right now, and we’re talking about Seattle media.
Even if he didn't do anything, does this story affect his (already small) chances of sticking around beyond this year?
I mean, you move a thousand miles from home. You don’t know anybody, you barely speak the language, all the other cliches. You have a couple great days at work, and all of a sudden everybody knows who you are (except d0nkey, apparently). Then, a week later, you get hit with this story. Would you want to come back for another year?
It won't be a matter of him wanting to
A team from one of the (much) richer leagues will snap him up

What story?
This isn’t a story. This is one person filing an accusation. Seriously.
Whatever you want to call it, people are interested in the accusation.
It just seemed funny to me that the newly pared-down P-I was reporting this before the relatively well-staffed Times.
The P-I is fighting to remain relevant and has nothing to lose.

The P-I no longer has to hew to those pesky "sourced journalism" standards like the Times does.

If he did it, he did it,
But I’m amazed that Montero would have to “stalk” ANYone, as the guy is probably neck-deep in cooze.
I’m not sure whether I should feel poorly, as a female, for doubting her story…things like Duke and my own personal experience with a lot of psychotic girls have jaded me. :(
the offseason sucks

Well now that you frame it with some context of course it all makes sense now.
He is kind of dreamy though.
Ljungberg is looking much better than I expected.
And admittedly, I was bracing myself for a loss today. So far, so good.
I don't see the point in this thread
considering the entire team will have the same accusations leveled against them on July 18th.

I was just going to say this
All future Sounders game threads should be in here.
