Got to hang out with one of my best mate’s Grant Balfour when the Tampa Bay Rays came to town. I could lie and write that we sat around ate vegemite, drank Foster’s and tossed the boomerang but sorry it didn’t happen! Believe it or not Aussies don’t drink Fosters ! Lets get that straight! We eat vegemite though! Gotta know how to spread it!
He will neither confirm nor deny any possible boomerang tossing.

He is correct about Foster's though.
And thank god, because that is not good beer.
The Bitters is at least tolerable and it costs $4 an oil can at the Funhouse.
This is the only time I will ever drink it.

I don't think Fosters is particularly foul or anything, especially compared to our macro lagers.
It’s just not good. And Oz actually has some quality beers.
I adore Sheaf Stout but have no exposure to any other Australian beer.

My time spent in Australia is kind of hazy, but I can recommend stuff from Cooper's or Murray's nationwide and Redoak if you're in Sydney.
stay away from Toohey’s and from anything with Absinthe mixed in.
At Big Star on 105th off Aurora
They sell Cooper’s, Toohey’s, and VB, among a few others. I lived off Cooper’s Red when we were there a few years ago; that and Bulmer’s (Magners, in the US) cider.
the offseason sucks
They sell VB in the US now? Holy crap....
the Canadian aussie rules team used to bring some back from Australia and sell it at a huge mark-up as a fundraiser. Bottleworks always had everything BUT VB.
Am I the only one who thinks Toohey’s is straight-up nasty?
No, I'm with you
I’m not a fan of Toohey’s or VB – they both taste like Rolling Rock to me. Even Cooper’s Green was too ale-y for my personal taste. Cooper’s Red was my favorite. There was a darker beer that I had somewhere there (we were in 4 different cities, it might have been Brisbane) that I enjoyed, but I could only find it once, so I can’t remember. Anyway, yeah – Big Star is the place to go for beer – they have more selection than Bottleworks, I think, and their focus is more international, whereas Bottleworks seems to focus mainly on Germanic countries. I think Big Star has just about every kind of Baltika known to man, too…
the offseason sucks
Big Star is great for random international beers
but they can’t touch Bottleworks or Pike Street Beer and Wine for American micros or Belgians.

Yeah, Bottleworks does have a lot of Belgian beer
I went there with a friend once, and three of us pooled enough money together to walk away with about 15 bottles – we held our own tasting at home. Unfortunately, Belgian beer gives me a hangover like none other, and I paid dearly for my lack of forethought. We used to live right up the street from the Stumbling Monk, too; that place will mess you UP.
the offseason sucks
