It was a motherfucker of a spasm.

Whole set of discs just seized up on him, he looked like a paralytic inchworm.

I was worried that the missed time might hurt his quest for 200 this season, given his typically slow starts

But he’s just made up for it by coming right out of the gate this time.

I don't know if this has been mentioned but according to Angels announcers

We’re about to send them to their first sub-.500 month since June 2006

by Fett42 on Apr 25, 2009 8:41 PM PDT reply actions

For any other team I wouldn't care, but that is fantastic.

It’s also very nice to talk to my A’s fan co-worker, who thought I was insane when I told her that the AL West was wide open and the Angels aren’t really all that good. SSS, of course, but it’s reassuring to know that I wasn’t crazy.

by Teej on Apr 25, 2009 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely.

I didn’t expect a .500 team, but I expected it to be just a few wins under. People seem to rank teams according to one factor: How many games they won last year. SI picked the Angels to win the World Series after an offseason in which they got considerably worse. BUT 100 WINS!

Theory:

Since Silva is a dick to the team, they are conspiring to take away his W by letting the game tie and then Ichiro will homer on command in the 10th

Interesting

Suggests to me that Wak is, in some part, still managing like the team isn’t contending, testing out his pen in various situations to see who will step up.

Makes me think about when he brought in Aardsma to face that lefty in game 3

by khmer luge on Apr 25, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you think that would look like if Wak had 3 lefties in the bullpen?

I love his bullpen management, but it’s not he’s had the opportunity to get match up crazy.

I still don't get why Lowe wasn't yanked one batter earlier

He could only throw strikes with the fastball and even at 95 that’s hittable

by Graham MacAree on Apr 25, 2009 9:03 PM PDT reply actions

You know what I was thinking.

Any time a casual fan thinks of the Mariners, they are always reminded of those glory days. Griffey, Buhner, Edgar, Randy Johnson, Dan Wilson, etc. They sometimes even say that they would go to a game if they got all those players again. It had me wondering, I know that they were good, but it seems fans grow more of an affection to the players than the team as a whole (Griffey, Wilson are good examples). Is this a result of the team actually playing good, or did the Mariners just have really good PR/Marketing back then?

by Fin on Apr 25, 2009 9:04 PM PDT reply actions

We had an incredible team.

If our pitching had been stronger we would have been a dynasty from 97-03.

I don't follow football like I do baseball.

But he always seemed to throw god awful passes in the last few minutes of a game where we were behind. I suppose that happens often given the situation, but those really stand out for me.

by d0nkey on Apr 25, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but he was also tied or 2nd to only Peyton Manning in game winning/tying drives while behind in the 4th quarter

At least he was in 2007. They put some statistic on screen for the come from behind win against the Bengals.
