Nick Johnson discussion on Federal Baseball
The Nationals SB blog is having a discussion in this fanpost about trading Nick Johnson. Who knows if Rizzo's reading Federal Baseball...but it can't hurt our chances of landing NJ to make our case for a deal, can it? With first base turning out to be the Mariners' version of Spinal Tap Drummer or Seahawks Wide Receiver this year...and Griffey doing a pretty good Vidro impression so far...it seems pretty likely that adding Johnson will help the team one way or another.

Just an FYI,
you could have edited the original post instead. The buttons are down with the email and print buttons. It’ll take you back to the editor you started with, and then you can republish with the amended title and text.

I dislike seeing comments disappear.

Also, "an FYI" or "a FYI"?
That’s always bugged me.

Probably should be "Just FYI"
but if you’re gonna stick an article in there and noun-ify the phrase, then, yes, it should be “an.”
As has happened to most abbreviations.
I just dislike breaking the “an before a non-vowel” rule, even though it sounds better when speaking.

That's not a rule, so you're good.
The rule is to use “an” before vowel sounds, not vowels. FYI starts with a vowel sound (e), so “an” is the winner.

Yay, loopholes!

I tried that
But I couldn’t change the title with the offending word in it. At least, the preview pane showed the original title and it occurred to me that the site probably ignored title changes since that would make a new post…not edit the old one.
I became confused and disoriented and angrily deleted the post. Sorry for any super-sweet comments that I wiped out, but it was hinted that I could be banned and I panicked.
That's an odd occurence, and I haven't had that problem.
No worries, just making sure you knew.
They’re pretty good here, you’d get a chance or two to fix things up before you got banned, and you’ll get warned first by a mod (see the bottom of the page) or with a popup.
You’ve already got the first thing down, as you can type in sentences with capitalization and all that grammar jazz, so I’d say you’re well on your way.

It's generally pretty hard to get banned

I like to understate.

Well, repeatedly annoying people who can ban you tends to be bad news
Most people aren’t quite retarded enough to do that here though.

Ok nothing's working for me
I was going to say “I didn’t retry the preview,” which might have worked. Then I hit “enter” by mistake and posted. Not my best work.
Also, it's a bad move to trade Washburn
when we have no one better on the horizon and he’s pitching well. Even on true-talent level, you can make a case that Washburn is our third best pitcher with Morrow not in the rotation.
I was intruigued by e chigliak’s statement:
DO NOT TRADE NICK JOHNSON…(Unless there’s a lights-out closer/closing prospect out there…)
I’d maybe consider Josh Fields, since I don’t like him, but Nick Johnson has 0 HR and only 2 doubles and an .040 ISO and a walk rate less than 10% – he might well have fallen off the cliff, but his batting average is hiding it.
Josh Fields has been really, really, really good lately

This week he's faced 11 batters and struck out 7 of them.
Two have managed to put the ball in play.

There's really someone who posts under the screenname "e chigliak?"

Maybe later in the year if we need a backup Branyan?

Sure, maybe.
I was all aboard the Nick Johnson train before Branyan and Griffey were both on the team, but there’s just nowhere to put him at the moment.

Well, he's a better hitter than the vast majority of our roster

Shelton's wOBA forecast
is solidly above league average, which isn’t bad for a bench bat.
That's just because our 1B platoon had non-DL pains
We still have Shelton in AAA, and Carp might be ready mid-season, so Johnson’s redundant. What are our weaknesses? SS and catcher, mainly.
I was referring to depth.
We may be set at the low levels, but in between here and there is suspect.
I would prefer a bit more SP depth, sure.
I’m just not entirely convinced I’d classify it as a weakness at this point.

A lot hinges on the progress of Gaby Hernandez and Garret Olson.
Other than them, the organization doesn’t really have a pitcher capable of being a being a good #3 / #4 within the next two years or so, and neither of those two are even likely to be that*. I see that as a depth problem.
*You can argue the semantics of “good #3/#4”, but I’m referring to a pitcher capable of delivering a ~3 WAR performance. Something like Kevin Slowey last year.
3 WAR is a hell of a lot to ask out of your #3/#4 slot.
by Aaron Campeau on Apr 24, 2009 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions
"capable of delivering" being the important part.
Most #3 starters have upside and aren’t the same sort of low level filler that you see at the end of the rotation (Chris Loux!).
Yeah, I'm worried something isn't right with Gaby
Olson’s slumping, but we’ll see. Hernandez hasn’t been right since he was in the Mets organization.
I'd be all for sending Corco down (assuming he can)
and adding Clement

Swisher + Johnson > Griffey + Sweeney
Could have been the difference between 85 and 81 wins.
Not that it is going happen but whatever. It is going to be a good season regardless.
Dave Cameron thinks we need another lefty
He talks about why in this post.
They can’t keep running out these overly RH line-ups and giving teams easy matchups to shut them down.
