A question for anyone watching on TV:

Has Rob Johnson looked as god awful behind the plate on TV as he has from the stands? He seems to drop pitches, have trouble blocking pitches, have a weak and inaccurate arm, and on the off chance the ball doesn’t get by him, it ricochets away instead of staying in front of him. From what I’ve seen, it seems like he got his defensive reputation based on the fact that he is a catcher, and he can’t hit, so he must be good at defense. Seems like a lot of catchers gain their defensive reputation that way…

We've talked about this a lot, but his reputation was never based on 'defense' at least as that's traditionally defined

(although his arm is not weak and inaccurate, at least not all the time). The org loves him because they think he handles pitchers well, and lots of pitchers love throwing to him.

Last year in Tacoma, he was catching Roy Corcoran. After a walk, he had a passed ball to let the runner go to second, a passed ball to let the guy go to third, and then didn’t block a pitch (which I think went as a WP) to score the runner. So yeah, I know he’s limited as a purely defensive catcher, but I still think people are confusing WHY the team loves him so much.

Post game radio interview, he said it was a back spasm and he would probably need a couple days.

He said its something he’s dealt with before, and not that big of a deal. I’m bummed, looked like his bat was maybe heating up.

Mike Sweeney's wife and children still love and support him.

As does his wonderful savior, Jesus Christ. He has many wonderful friends who routinely call him to tell him what a great job he is doing and how they think he is awesome. His dog knows many tricks. Mike Sweeney will be fine.

I would like to add:

Mr. Sweeney is a super nice guy. If Mr. Sweeney ever opens a baseball camp for kids, I will be sure to send my as of yet unborn child to that camp.

However, if he never makes another PA for the M’s I would be fine with that as well.

This is undeniable, but

what’s weird is the utterly random way that one out of the nation’s 30,000 bar-rock/frat-rock bands shoots to superstardom, while the other 29,999 struggle to get people to shows if there’s not also drink specials and contemplate giving up original songs and just play the hits, because then you could at least make a living.
It’s basically a lottery.

Well, that's what makes it odd.

We’ll take it as given that they weren’t picked based on songwriting, a unique sound, talent, etc. So what was it? Marketable faces (uh, no)? Legendary hand-jobs to studio execs? A willingness to sign near-exploitative contracts (I think plenty of people would sign these, so I doubt it)?
