In today's hot new episode of Faces, Jarrod Washburn looks like he's getting pretty tired of you knocking on his door every day at six in the morning to ask if he wants his address re-painted on the curb, and Andy Sonnanstine looks like a 45 year old brick mason.

After an offday of speculation, Yuni's in the lineup tonight, so if Wakamatsu's sending a message, it's a vote of confidence instead of a threat. My hope is that the two have talked behind closed doors and this is the beginning of a probationary period of sorts for our delightfully spherical little shortstop, but for all I know it's just as likely they haven't said a word to each other since March, so whatever. I'd have rather seen Cedeno tonight, but God knows this won't be the last opportunity for Wakamatsu to scare Yuni shitless.

via Baker's blog

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/mariners/2009/04/21/wakamatsu_wants_improved_focus.html

  • RRS isn’t feeling any better and hasn’t had an MRI yet.
  • Wak deflected reporters questions about Yuni specifically, but said the team needs to be better focused from beginning to end as a whole. Infielders took grounders today.

I like what Wak is doing here. He’s building trust with Yuni individually by shielding him from the media’s criticism. If Yuni is ever going to get serious about playing to his ability, I’ll favor this approach over public chastisement and embarrassment, especially now.

by sammy on Apr 21, 2009 5:41 PM PDT reply actions

It is strange.

Especially since they’ve been in Seattle this whole time. On the other hand, yay for Jakubauskas fans: looks like he’s getting at least 2-3 more starts.

by sammy on Apr 21, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I would favor that approach had the signing of Ronny Cedeno not sent that message already

He should’ve already known he was playing for his job since the start of the season, and he’s still played like crap. Now it’s either a question of him not listening or not caring or just plain being bad, all of which require a tougher response in my opinion. I think he’s had enough chances to right the ship by now and for whatever reason, he hasn’t.

by OlSalty on Apr 21, 2009 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions

New regime, new manager, new coaches

What I meant to say was “especially this early.” There’s plenty of time for the stick later. Give Wak some time to feel the lazy bastard out; if he can succeed with this approach where others have failed, more power to him. I can guarantee, however, that this approach will not work if we break out the stick now now now. (I don’t think Cedeno was meant to send the message that the media and us interpreted it as. I personally really like Cedeno in the super-utility role.)

Umpiring is dangerous

From the Rangers vs. Blue Jays game:

“Hank Blalock pops out to shortstop Marco Scutaro. Two out.”

Not mentioned: The barrel of the bat broke and at the end of Blalock’s swing the fat part of the bat flew into the Ump’s face mask, knocking him down for the count. He had to be carried out. Yuck. Hope he’s alright.

Didn't some other ump end up with a concussion

at a Yankees game in the past few days?

by Eyebrows on Apr 21, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Was going to mention this, but yes.

The homeplate umpire took a foul ball off his mask which cracked the entire crown. He had to wear one of Jose Molina’s backup masks. Within two innings, he had to be replaced because he was still shaky from the foul ball.

Most of these umpires are 50+, too. It’s crazy they have the stamina to stay focused as long as they do while taking a beating

That's a tough call

Cause hes out of the crease. And while you can get goalie interference out of the crease, what about non-intentional contact outside the crease? What if he was 10 feet out instead of 1 foot out?

by phil333 on Apr 21, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Refs should be consistent across the board.

They’re all trained the same, they are supposed to be consistent. If a game gets out of hand, I can see calling more roughings etc, but bumping is bumping, and you can’t let a goal in within a couple seconds of one because the goalie has no chance.

Embarrassing for the Atlanta Braves, that is. Both were 1-run games, too. And in fact, the Braves had runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 9th just now AND FAILED TO GET A RUN ACROSS.

The Braves have just lost the series to THE NATIONALS.
