An Observation
JJ Putz:
| Year | Fastball mph | Contact% |
| 2006 | 95.6 | 69.7 |
| 2007 | 96.0 | 73.3 |
| 2008 | 95.1 | 74.1 |
| 2009 | 92.2 | 84.0 |
I'm not going to read anyone any eulogies - not yet - but I'm beginning to think we sold at the right time.
(To prevent you from getting too big-headed, you should check out what Luis Valbuena's done so far in AAA. Thanks for pointing that one out to me, Dave.)

And then you should look at what Mike Carp's doing in AAA

Holy shit, that guy looks good.
I know, I know – a hot streak makes anyone look good, but Carp is killing the ball.
Homered yesterday off Mazzaro, walked and was HBP – to raise his OBP to .490. Plus, he made two amazing grabs at first.
Uh, Ezequiel Carrera still has a .400 OBP too!
The best part is that the main knock on Carp was lack of power

He's still not really a home run hitter
but I’d kind of rather a 22yo 1B hit a ton of doubles and some HRs rather than the all-or-nothing style of… I don’t know, Jeff Larish. I’m really enjoying the Daric Barton-when-Daric-Barton-was-good vibe you get w/Carp. And he plays better D than either Larish or Barton, so that’s awesome….
Yes, but not-really-a-homerun-hitter >>>> a guy who can't hit for power

Oh totally.
Similar to the UZR thing with Ramirez, it’s sort of amazing how often a player (esp. in the minor leagues) is defined by his worst season. He had a shitty ISO-P his first year in Binghamton, so he’s a guy who can’t hit for power. Odd.
He started that way last year and tapered off a little
I hope he pans out for you guys.

Yeah, I thought we won that trade the day we made it...
Getting Cedeno and Olson = icing on the cake.
The only loss I foresaw in that deal was Valbuena — and, of course, “Tuesdays with Sean Green” (though not Green himself, really).
Loved that trade then, and love it even more now!
I’m even a little excited about ENDY FREAKIN CHAVEZ!!!!

You know,
I doubt his fastball has really lost so much zip. I remember about week ago the mets were getting blown out and Putz was up so I thought I’d check out what his stuff looks like this year. He was sitting at 91-92, throwing his sorry change up and in the three at bats that I watched I don’t remember any swinging strikes. Maybe there were a couple, but he didn’t seem like he was in control of the at bat.
Then more recently I checked out what he was doing in the 1-0 Santana start. Wholly different pitcher. His fastball was coming in in the mid nineties, and the split looked the same as ever before. Batters looked lost. He got two Ks swinging and a grounder, and was spotting the splitter very well.
But you know what? I don’t give a shit. Putz’ 06 and 07 seasons are special and I loved him then but he was not ever going to repeat them and I’d rather he disappoint NY fans. Fuck Putz.

If Maikel Cleto ends up putting it all together I will declare this trade to be the greatest in Mariners history

No, no, no...
You’ve got it mixed up!
It’s Darren Bragg for Heathcliff Slocumb
And
Jamie Moyer for Derek Lowe & Jason Varitek!
There!

Luis Valbuena is from Caja Seca, Venezuela.
I hope some of you speak Spanish too.
Well that's an interesting name for a city.

So help a guy out here....
I know nothing of spanish slang. I’m assuming “caja” has the same, uh, double meaning it does in English? What?
If you read it in English it can sound somewhat inappropriate
Whether box has the same double connotation in the Spanish speaking world, I don’t know.

Venezuela is Spanish for LOL?

His antics brighten my days like Sean Avery talking shit to a goalie that doesn't speak English.
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me.
And when I say brother, I don’t mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think.
"Get up you crazy black man, I'm gonna make you drink my piss!" - Will Ferrell.
He also
has a 10% Line Drive percentage against. We’ve been talking about his strange season (so far) over on Amazin Avenue – he hasn’t been striking a ton of guys out yet, but nobody has hit the ball hard off of him, so it has balanced out. And like someone above said, he looked much better in his last appearance, throwing harder and getting 2 K’s.
He was up to 94.1 in his last game
but then that’s still lower, and the fastest pitch he’s thrown all season – 95.6 (94.6 is #2) – isn’t anywhere close to where he used to top out.

If Morrow ends up better than JJ this year I'll be highly amused

If Morrow has a higher WPA than Lincecum this year
I’m going streaking
by Bearskin Rugburn on Apr 21, 2009 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions
If he's used as a closer, he probably will.
He won’t be as valuable, but hey, that’s the methodology…..
Yep
Value’s a different matter. But I wanted him to be better than Lincecum at something. It’s an interesting bet actually.

Morrow in, game over
just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
