Hypothetical Mariners and Royals Combo

So, one of my good friends is from Kansas City and is an avid Royals fan.  Today he asked the hypothetical question, how good would a 25 man roster of Mariners and Royals be.

Having a case on the Monday's I hopped onto Fangraphs.com to do some number crunching.  I used 2008 win values to see how exactly how this team would do.  Full roster can be found here http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pFS0Uk-sE2lI98LXrMjBxKA&hl=en.

The rundown is this team record is projected at 103-59 with a salary right around 100 million.  Getting about 25 vaule wins form the pitching staff and 30 value wins from the offense.  I think this is a pretty good team, not sure if this will interest anyone but me, but hey, the 2009 MariRoyals are awesome.

Clement/Buck platoon!

I think we’d have to move Alex Gordon to second of first, but it would be a pretty damn good team.

Is Aviles that bad?

He was worth 4.4 wins last year. I get that what he did last isn’t what he’ll do next, but shouldn’t that save him from a “bleh” label?

And it's blocked at work.

Wouldn’t Aviles at SS and Lopez at 2B be a better arrangement? Aviles seems to be a good defender at short, so why downgrade him to second and open up a hole there?

Shortstop

What about Mike Aviles?

That is a good question

I think it has to be Wakamatsu, if its Trey Hillman he will find someway to get Farnsworth in there to blow every other game.

HOW DARE YOU

It hurts because it’s true.

Royals, NBA, Golden Hurricane, Hawkeyes, Chiefs, and KU basketball, in that order.

Quick comments

1. Aviles 2008 BABIP: .359, so there may be some regression there.

2. Coco Crisp had minimal value in 08, but I think he was hurt for a lot of the year. I think there’d be a great competition in Spring Training b/w Crisp, Chavez, Gutierrez, DeJesus, and potentially Teahen in the OF.

3. Likewise, I think there could be an interesting competition at 2nd b/w Lopez, Callaspo, and Teahen. Lopez goes into the Spring as the assumed starter, but would have both those guys challenging him for his job.

4. The AL record for team strikeouts by a pitching staff in a season is 1266 and the MLB record is 1404. (Source: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_strik.shtml). I think this team could seriously challenge those records.

5. Good question about the manager — how about WFB as player/coach to maximize the effect of his grit on team chemistry?

When he's healthy, that is.

I'm not going to lie, I miss WFB.

I have some kind of weird attraction to him, lack of talent and all.

And really, it’s annoying the Meche is good now. Bleh. At least Ho-Ram still sucks.

WFB?

No. Just no. He’s an embarrassment to us all. Wouldn’t Tug even be better than him? Teahen’s probably the better choice but he’s got no SS in him.

Actually

The team has 13 Mariners and 12 Royals, so its a pretty even split.

I was mainly referring to the starting infield and outfield.

If Endy started more games last season, he would likely be as valuable as DeJesus, if not more. And if you are going with Bedard’s 2007 numbers, you should also go with Johjima’s 2007 numbers.

by Wilder. on Apr 20, 2009 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought about that

but I decided that using the ’07 numbers with Bedard is more legit because he was hurt last year and because he looks like the 2007 pitcher so far this year.

Cruz needs to be in that bullpen

Dump Mahay or Corcoran, IMO. And I think Crisp is a little underrated here if we’re looking at total value (defense + offense).

Cruz is in the bull pen

and with Morrow and Soria the final innings should be a breeze. Leaving off Crisp was one of the harder decisions, but being a M’s guy I decided to go with Gutierrez in center and Endy as the 4th OF. A case can easily be made for Crisp though.

I'd certainly take Crisp

instead of Guillen.

Yeah

Guillen would mainly DH, the team is pretty short on bats in general, but I am not sure who else to stick at DH.

DH Butler

he’s due for a “break out”

But think of the triples

Coco is a triples machine. And nothing is better than triples. They’re the best thing in the universe… except for players getting nailed in embarrassing places. That’s pretty entertaining too.
