Behold The Wisdom of ICHIRO!...

From Larry Stone on the Times Blog:

The Japanese media is out in full force to cover Ichiro's pursuit of Isao Harimoto's hit total, which he tied with the grand slam. Here's what Ichiro said about that hit, his 3,085th between Japan and Seattle:

"A lot of time when I have a record on the line, I have a tendency to hit a home run in those situations, so it crossed my mind maybe it would happen.

"But a grand slam? That barely happens in any situation, so it definitely didn't cross my mind.''

And here's a funny quote from Ichiro (via interpreter Ken Barron):

"For me to get a home run on the same day Junior had a historical homer for him, that's very special for me. But also today, probably the two lightest guys in the major leagues hit homers together - me and Endy Chavez. That's very special.''

The last part is classic ICHIRO! in the best of ways!

He actually said that?

Because that’s fucking hilarious.

To say he's got a long ways to go might be an understatment.

"Fights begin, finger prints are took, days is lost, bail is made, court dates are ignored, cycle is repeated."

What he said exactly was:

“HA! You must be bad at math.”

The “HA” was the key to that statement.

...and now I'm here

Would this book be any good?

I’ve never read Baseball is Just Baseball: The Understated Ichiro, but it should definitely be a reference for this list.

The disparity between new and used prices perplexes me.

Was Ichiro that quotable back then though? It seems like more of his better ones have been in the last few years.

Are you thinking about the Papua New Guinea beer comment?

"Usually I enjoy Japanese beer, but given the situation, if I was objectively watching the game, I wouldn’t care if it was Japanese beer, American beer or beer from Papua New Guinea." — Ichiro (Copy/pasted from USSM).

Maybe its related, but I found what I was thinking of
“Playing on this team and seeing what is happening around me, I feel that something is beginning to fall apart,” Ichiro said through a translator. "But, if I was not in this situation, and I was objectively watching what just happened this week, I would probably be drinking a lot of beers and booing

."

How come the ESPN Los Angeles crew do not know how to pronounce Ichiro?

Aren’t they supposed to be the ones bringing a West Coast spin to Sports Center?

Fear the NPE

John Anderson is one of the regular anchors

and for some reason, he still can’t say Ichiro’s name correctly, despite saying it for the last eight years and all of his colleagues saying it correctly. I’m starting to think it’s an inside joke or something.
