I believe it is because of weather purposes.

Warmer weather during the afternoon that cools off quickly as the evening progresses. For Safeco and doomed stadiums it doesn’t make much sense, though.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus all the other games start at normal time

My guess is that it’s related to traffic. Since it’ll almost always be a sell-out, might as well get everybody into the city before rush hour starts. The game will end at ~7, so cars won’t be leaving the area until after rush hour has ended

This is a great point.

Guaranteed increased attendance at most stadiums. Also, lots of pre-game activities so people can get work off for the day.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

All I make are great points, Dawg

Seriously though I do think that is the biggest reason for it. Seems to be how they do it for most teams, and it certainly applies. Every gets into Seattle at 2-3 when daytime traffic is about as low as it gets, and gets them out at around 7 when everybody is out of town already

Is this team more fun than it is good?

Am I the only one who is excited about this team being just plain fun to watch, outside of any consideration of their ability to win?

Whether they’re good or not I think remains to be seen (good/lucky enough to make the playoffs anyway). But it seems pretty clear that they are going to be fun to watch. Good dynamic defense, defensive substitutions, multiple players who can bunt and steal, a manager who appears to be very hands on with frequent substitutions and many different batting orders.

I feel like even if the record turns mediocre that it will be a year full of exciting and enjoyable baseball.

by Snuffleupagus on Apr 14, 2009 2:08 PM PDT reply actions

I've had a blast watching this team so far.

It could very well be an “anything but the 2008 team” factor, but I’m really pulling for the new guys (particularly Gutierrez and Branyan). And watching Gutierrez and Chavez play in the outfield is certainly a blast, with or without Raul bias.

by Teej on Apr 14, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think part of it is how much money these guys are making.

Or I should say, not making. Give Branyan and Griffey comparable money to what Sexson and Vidro were making and I wouldn’t be all that excited about watching them either.

OK I probably would be excited to watch Griffey for a couple months, but that’s only because he’s Griffey.

by Terminator_X on Apr 14, 2009 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

The dynamic of the way this team is built is amazingly fun to watch.

Great defense, great pitching (at least with Felix and Bedard), and an interesting lineup that includes slap hitters, gap power, and home run power. Anything can happen at the plate at any time.

But to a casual fan, they may not enjoy it as much because they don’t pay attention to the little things.

Iono about you guys, but I'm cutting work at 4 PM to go home and watch the last six innings

With the Angels heavy RH line up, Sliva might do well if he has his sinker going. Of course, the only way we know if he has his sinker going is if he does well so it’s a bit of a tautology.

by Woodinville_12thMan on Apr 14, 2009 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

However I still like the decision just for the fact that Guti is further down the lineup after his rough day on Sunday. Also Ronny has more speed so hopefully GIDP will be less frequent, and also if Chavez gets on base it might in theory give Ronny more fastballs which his inferior bat may find easier to hit than breaking pitches.

Since this guy is a sinkerball merchant I wouldn’t want Guti in the two hole after the 2 GIDP from Sunday.

by EnglishMariner on Apr 14, 2009 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Cedeno has big potential with the bat as well.

Not Hanley Ramirez potential, but Edgar Renteria potential (in his good seasons). I think he’s only 24, too.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't be surprised if he does put up those numbers, though.
In 65 games at Iowa in 2005, Cedeño batted an impressive .355, and slugged over .500 for the first time in his professional career.

It would appear Jeff Clement and Cedeno have similar issues. The potential is there and they have proven to hit AAA pitching, but struggle to adjusting at the major league level.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

and then backed it up by hitting .359/.422/.539 in 75 games in AAA in 2007.

He was a hitting prospect who got the ‘bust’ tag thanks to a terrible 06 and a not-great 08.
At this point, nobody knows what his offensive ceiling is. Could be AAAA player, could be Renteria.

by Scruffy Lefty on Apr 14, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I figured as much.

That’s too bad. People who live in the Seattle area are blacked out anyway, so they’ll be watching FSN anyway, and you could expand the number of people seeing your program if you let MLB.tv show it out of town.

The way we think about broadcasting rights makes my head spin. Not in an “I’m right” way, but in an “I’m confused” way.

by Teej on Apr 14, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I strongly agree

I’m sure there are ‘reasons’ for these things but I don’t see them logically. mlb.tv could have pregame and postgame stuff, and it continually surprises me that there aren’t commercials.

by Snuffleupagus on Apr 14, 2009 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The commercials are why the local stations won't cede the rights to MLB

pre- and post-game shows are owned and controlled by the local station, not the team/league, and the stations don’t want to give up the ad revenue.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 14, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

So dumb the local stations won't cede rights to MLB.

As long as the local station is being streamed, which it is, I don’t see why they would deny the extra exposure. Ridiculous.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Ceding rights means ceding money

MLB would inevitably take a piece of the ad revenue. There’s no local station in the country that would voluntarily give money to MLB.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 14, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Well if MLB demands some of the ad revenue, then it falls on MLB.

Which is retarded because they are losing out on revenue of the package they are offering. It’s like they are saying “we would rather have zero revenue than give up the piece of local ad revenue.”

If that is the case, what s stupid business decision.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure mlb views pre and post game shows

as local-interest type things, and it isn’t worth it for them to incur the bandwidth costs to host a show that will be of interest to almost exclusively local viewers – sure, there are a few people here and there outside Seattle that might want to see them, but the numbers that would watch these things, in comparison to the numbers of people that watch the games, probably aren’t worth the expense or the bandwidth load they’d incur.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 14, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

"MLB would inevitably take a piece of the ad revenue."

OK, I guess this is the big missing piece I wasn’t looking at. I had no idea how they would lose any ad revenue with more people looking at their product. So it’s MLB’s fault I’m pissed!

by Teej on Apr 14, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if it is the local stations wanting some of the subscription revenue, though.

Which would make much more sense to me. I don’t think MLB is that stupid to let the free revenue of extra subscriptions within the blacked out market. Maybe it’s the teams wanting people to fill the stadium instead of watching on the internet?

Bah! I am stressing about this too much. They need to hire me if they want me to speculate further.

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Teams wanting people to fill the stadium is where the blackout rules originated, yeah

they’ve existed in all sports since TV was invented, pretty much.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 14, 2009 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

They are also losing revenue by blacking out people who are only interested in their team.

It is insane. I am guessing it is because of the Extra Innings package, which is a shitty package. I’m fine without the commercials on MLB.TV, but if that is the hold-up, then add them!

MLB.TV is not maximizing their profit potential and advertisers would welcome any extra amount of exposure. Confusing business strategy. I don’t know if there are regulations that are halting such action.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Apr 14, 2009 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I remember living in Japan in 2001 and able to stream radio from the news websites.

But then 2002 rolled around and they were prohibited from streaming the games because MLB.TV was introduced (or at least figured out people were going straight to the free radio stream).

by Wilder. on Apr 14, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

MLB seems to be making an NFL-like push to gain as much control over its product as possible.

Though I don’t think we’ll ever see universal broadcasts like the NFL, thankfully, since there are just way too many games.

White Castle, Jack-In-The Box, 5 Guys, Cheeseburger Charley’s, Wendy’s, Sonic, Krystal (White Castle’s similar competetor), Checker’s, BK, MC-D’s, Fat Mo’s, etc…It’s quite the ‘hot bed’ for fast food burger joints. Still, this says nothing of the other fast food joints.

I know I'm a food snob and really don't eat any fastfood outside of the occasional In 'n Out,

but god damn man just get a Western Bacon Cheeseburger or something and save yourself hours of driving.

You're right. None of those places have had customers die from food poisoning.

I can’t imagine having a JIB craving; the fact that eating at the local one proved fatal pretty much nipped that in the bud. Place still kinda creeps me out.

Did you know:

The Ultimate Cheeseburger (no bacon) is 109% of your daily fat, and 140% of your daily saturated fat? Cutting out fast food is hard, but it is so worth it.

There was a whole series of awesome commercials with Jack in a coma

not awesome because he was in a coma, but an awesome series of overwrought soap-opera stories about “will Jack make it” and when he did, he emerged to a whole new JIB logo.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

Hmmm...

It’s funny because I get JIB commercials, but the nearest location is 300 miles away. I didn’t notice the new logo, though.

I have about 700 within walking distance of my place.

It’s a San Diego company, so I guess that makes sense. I remember being quite excited when they opened one in Pullman. Then I ate there way too much and put on about 20 pounds.
