OT: LL Watchmen Outing?
I just bought my tickets online. 12:01 AM Thursday night at the Cinerama. Anyone else willing to spit in the eye of the 9-5 workweek and join in? The movie is almost three hours long, so don't count on getting to sleep before 4am or so.
Despite the critics blackout, the film is getting positive responses from just about everyone that's leaking their impressions. And it IS the greatest comic book ever written... so why not do something silly? Movietickets.com has tickets for sale. Do not expect to be able to just show up and buy tickets.
I haven't gone down for a midnight premier at the Cinerama since Lord of the Rings finished up. I remember standing around with hundreds of people (many of whom were dressed up as their favorite characters) sipping on my flask of whiskey trying to stay warm. If you're any kind of fanboy, there's no way to beat the feeling of seeing a film with hundreds of other zealots who are on maximum geek out. I guess it's like a playoff baseball atmosphere.

I'm thoroughly excited to see this as I finished the book on Sunday.
If you want to hold this outing further south, I’m in.
The Cinerama is too awesome to pass up for this film
The sound system and magnificently huge screen and theater capacity make it a must. There will be 3x the number of people packed inside the Cinerama compared to an average theater.
Rotten Tomatoes has Watchmen at 70%.
Not exactly setting the world on fire, but not bad either.

V for Vendetta checked in at 73%, Sin City at 77% and 300 at 60%.
That style of movie just doesn’t work for some people, apparently. I’m honestly surprised that Sin City rated out that well in comparison to the other two.
I hated 300.
But I thought V and Sin City were good movies. Not amazing, but good.

Both movies made me want to go out and fuck some shit up, though.

I was entertained by 300. It was campy enough in some regards to work and had some great action.
Gerard Butler was a badass, and McNulty raped a woman. What more can you ask of a movie?
Good directing. Good writing.
Less yelling.

Sin City was great, V for Vendetta was terrible.

So not true
Both were great.
And, unlike most of the Marvel comic book movies, they stayed remarkable in line with the source material.
V for Vendetta was aawwffuull.
I was never annoyed at an Emma Goldman reference until I saw that movie.

I would guess a lot of what goes into this rating is that The Dark Knight set the standard.
All comic hero movies will be judged against The Dark Knight until something else raises the bar.
And looking at some of the costumes and graphics in Watchmen, I just don't see it living up to The Dark Knight.
But it looks like one hell of an entertaining movie; just not Oscar worthy when it comes to acting and overall feel like TDK was.
Thank you, Seattle P-I for the following headline:
Houshmanzadeh to have MRI Today
The story goes on to explain that this is just a routine part of the physical and there are no concerns about the MRI.
Please oh please I hope he fails his physical.

My source says he flat-out declined to do an MRI before signing.

Last time I was at Belltown Billiards (dont ask)
there was a contingent of skanks promoting “Sparks awareness” amongst the begelled.
That's unfortunate
BB would actually be a pretty nice place to shoot pool if it wasn’t for the clientele.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
You know
It might be terrible for me, it might taste like crushed up sweettarts crossed with liquid meth, but dammit, boys, it gets the job done!
When I want a slight buzz, and to stay up an extra couple of hours, Sparks is there for me.
I thought they stopped making Sparks,.

Via Wikipedia:
Sparks was a caffeinated alcohol beverage, one of the first such beverages. Its active ingredients caffeine, taurine, ginseng and guarana were common to energy drinks; however, its additional focus on alcohol was not.
As of December 2008, at the behest of San Francisco and 13 states, distributor MillerCoors LLC is taking the caffeine out of its Sparks line of energy drinks, which list ginseng, taurine and 6 to 7 percent alcohol among its other ingredients, as well as changing its marketing campaign.1 “We’re doing it to protect the public health of our young people and to reform business practices,” said S.F. City Attorney Dennis Herrera.

They have those caffeine concentrate things next to the creamer at 7-11.
Grab a handful of those and put the cardiologist on speed dial.

As I've seen it so far
They’ve stopped making Sparks with caffeine and whatnot, but they’re still out there. They’ll eventually run through ’em all, but for the moment you can still find some.
I’ll try to grab ya one, Johnny!
Has anyone ever used ChaCha?
It’s a free service that lets you send in a question via text. Someone researches your question quickly and texts you back an answer. It apparently works quite well (in lieu of mobile google or whatever).
My aunt is/was a person who answered people's questions.
She got paid like $0.10 for every question she answered. Apparently the service is really good, though.
My friends and I have used it before to solve disputes.
It’s pretty quick and a nifty little service.

Johnbai, correct me if I'm wrong but this isn't meant to be the OTFPOTD is it?
If this is a post to organize an LL event we should probably have a separate off-topic fanpost.
Yeah, but it's cool either way
I’m not going to be a nazi if this thread gets jacked and turned into a general off topic thread.
I’m going to the Watchmen either way… just wanted to invite some other LL faithful to join in.
I'm thinking about it, last time I was enough of a fanboy to go the midnight release for a movie was Last Crusade.
I was thinking that was in ‘92, but that didn’t seem to fit as we had to get the parental escort. It was ‘89, The Lost Ark was released in ’81. Holy crap I’m hard pressed to think of a movie that has held up as well as either of those, especially Lost Ark.
Based on the prescreening of the movie, I hope to god they editted it to something better.

QQ... It's a graphic novel, not a comic book
And I’ve officially crossed a nerd threshold that probably has no business on a sports blog. Oh well, it’s OT.
Bummed that they’ve cut the black freighter bit, but I’ve heard it may surface as a separate movie or bonus DVD in a special edition package. Probably depends on how well the film does, so I’ll be sure to pay my $10 and join in. Have fun at the LL outing… Too much going on at work for me to spit in the face of my 8-6’er job right now.
Free Stephen "Awesome" Strasburg!
The Black Freighter is coming out later this month as an animated DVD.
Apparently the DVD will also have “Under The Hood” as a short documentary.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Excellent! I totally missed that memo.
Best news of the day, by far.

Well, I own a bunch of DC comic books that say Watchmen on the cover
I only say “graphic novel” when I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m reading one.
Just stick it inside the cover of an unabridged edition of Count of Monte Cristo
Worked for me in high school.
Unless you're reading "Ultimate Watchmen"
Which is by far my favorite, definitive edition. The only thing that would fit inside is Prince Fielder’s bulbous posterior.

Or what's more commonly known as a 'long comic book'
by Graham MacAree on Mar 4, 2009 10:30 PM PST up reply actions
When Time Magazine listed Watchmen among its 100 Greatest Novels of All Time
it was a cry of redemption to comic books. It shone a glimmer of credibility upon my beloved, much-maligned media. So I support taking back the term… much like the gay community has taken back the term “queer”. Comic books have lurked in the shadows too long! Viva la revolucion!
Although my favorite show of all time is Mystery Science Theater 3000, so I suppose that makes me a hardcore nerd too.
Fuck.

I've never heard of that, but it sounds rad.
