2009 NCAA Final Four Open Thread.

Well, what a weekend. Surprises and great basketball everywhere.

UConn was able to withstand the loss of Jerome Dyson (which I thought would cost them any shot at the Final Four) and get through 40 minutes of hell to get to Detroit.

Michigan St proves that hey maybe the Big Ten doesn't really suck by beating a team that most people had going to the Final Four in Louisville.

North Carolina reminded people why it was the preseason #1, absolutely demolishing every team it has faced, including a 12 point win over the Blake Griffins.

And finally, Villanova beats Pitt in one of the best games in NCAA tournament history on Reynold's Run.

What it sets up for us is a fantastic Saturday of basketball.

Michigan St. Spartans vs Connecticut Huskies 6:07 pm CBS

Villanova Wildcats vs North Carolina Tar Heels 8:47 pm CBS

Michigan St. has the length on defense to shut down anybody (ask Terrance Williams) and enough scoring on offense to make them dangerous. Not only that, but they have players stepping up when they need them. Goran Suton averaged 10 points a game during the regular season but has averaged almost 20 a game against Kansas and Louisville. Connecticut has been near the top of the rankings all year, using the outside attack of AJ Price and Jerome Dyson/Kemba Walker with the inside presence of Jeff Adrien and Hasheem Thabeet. They are a balanced team that can beat you in many different ways. They need Kemba Walker and Stanley Robinson to continue to play well in their replacement of Jerome Dyson. The Huskies are the favorite in their game against the Spartans, but it should be a great defensive matchup, and Michigan St is more than capable of pulling off the upset. My prediction: Connecticut 71, Michigan State 68.

North Carolina is the best team remaining. They can be beaten, but if they don't win the title, then there was an upset. Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, and Ty Lawson all decided to come back for another year in Chapel Hill in order to deliver a national championship to the Tar Heels. They have size, outside shooting, and 2 of the best players at their positions (Hansbrough and Lawson). They're awesome with a capital A, baby! On the other end, Villanova is the lowest remaining seed and a team that not a ton of people thought could make it this far. But after demolishing very good UCLA and Duke teams and beating Pitt, the Wildcats deserve to be in Detroit. They are led by 4 seniors who have won more games than any other class in Villanova history. Dante Cunningham and Scottie Reynolds will be discussed a lot before the week is over, but a lot of credit goes to Shane Clark and Dwayne Anderson, two players that have refused to let the Cats lose. Villanova has the guards and solid inside play, but it might not be enough against a loaded UNC team. Prediction: North Carolina 75, Villanova 71

Yeah right. Real Prediction: Villanova 77, North Carolina 75.

Championship Prediction: Villanova 74, Connecticut 70

MOP: Dante Cunningham, Villanova

I was in Boston last weekend and it was one of the greatest weekends ever. The Pitt-Xavier game was fun and exciting, and while Nova ended up beating Duke by 23, it felt a lot closer. I had terrible seats (literally the back row in the balcony) but the view was still fine and me and my friend snuck down to the lower levels when the Duke fans began to clear out. I thought Thursday was amazing, but I had no idea.

Saturday morning I was still drunk from the night before. I felt so terrible that there was no opportunity for nervousness. As I became less and less hungover, the butterflies bagan to make their appearance. As much as I had said that no matter what it was a great season, a loss this close to the Final Four would have hurt. On the way to the game, Villanova fans outnumbered Pitt fans by a huge margin, which was the case inside as well.

The atmosphere at the end of the game was amazing. When Redding threw in the long inbounds the crowd had no idea what was going on. As Fields waited for his second free throw, I was telling my friend (who goes to BC but was rooting for Nova) that I wanted Fields to make the second, because "if Blair puts in an offensive rebound for the win, I will kill somebody tonight." As we were about to inbounds, it looked like Redding started to call a timeout before (thank god) realizing we had none left. He threw in the inbounds to Cunningham, who barely controlled it before giving it to Scottie, and the rest is history. The roof blew off of the Garden as Nova went crazy. Waiting for that final 00.5 to happen was the worst feeling in the world. Villanova had just won; now Pitt had a chance to take that feeling away. But Fields' shot missed as the celebration was on. Some of the players came into the stands to celebrate with their friends and families. Rollie Massimino was there.

All in all, an incredible experience that will probably not be topped. But I will try.

I will be driving to Detroit with 3 of my friends to see one of the best Villanova teams of all time try to keep it going. It will be a great time, win or lose, but a win would be incredible. Hopefully all three games are fantastic and everybody has fun.

LET"S GO NOVA!

While I agree MSU has some great defense,

I wouldn’t use their shutting down Terrance Williams as evidence. He is a great all-around player, but not a dynamic offensive force.

Michigan State fought, claws, and willed their way to Detroit through an endless amount of pundits insisting they have no shot

I’m not so sure if Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and the rest of the Detroit ballers are going to let themselves lose in Detroit on the grandest stage of them all. Or, at the very least, I can’t possibly see them falling to the Huskies, and I have all the respect in the world for the Price-Robinson-Thabeet connection; I picked them to the Final Four with no hesitation. It’s just when you’re as focused as those kids are, it’s hard to knock them off their pedestal – especially when said pedestal is the cavernous football stadium-turned-basketball-mecca of Ford Field.

If we see a Michigan St. – UNC rematch, I can’t possibly pick the Spartans to win. Not after what I saw in December. But, that doesn’t mean I won’t be rooting my ass off for the kids, and it sure as hell doesn’t mean I think they don’t have a shot.

It’s funny, everyone wrote off the Spartans to lose to Robert Morris, essentially (and I’m not talking about the fellow college b-ball nuts on this site, either – I’m talking everyone). And then when they got to the Sweet 16, everyone picked against them vs. Kansas, even though they railroaded them in January. And, of course, we know the hype L’ville had after their unrealistically, stupidly over-hyped 103-point massacre…of a 12 seed many felt didn’t deserve a spot in the tournament in the first place and who beat a 5-seed (who should have realistically been a 9/10 seed) and a 13-seed to reach that matchup.

I also know of the hype North Carolina has right now, but this is a much more focused group of gentlemen than the L’ville group was. The last thing any early 20-something needs to hear, though, is how amazing and untouchable they are for an entire week. As long as they avoid the press clippings, they’ll roll to the title.

I don’t think they will. In particular, I believe at least two of Ellington, Green, and Lawson will buy their own stock and mail it in psychologically against Villanova (‘cause we sure as hell know Psycho T won’t), and I believe it will cost them dearly. That, and Villanova is good enough to beat anyone, anywhere. Even with two underwhelming performances from UNC’s starting crew, ‘Nova will have to play at the consistently high level they’ve managed to maintain for 3.5 games. Guard play is where you can get UNC, with a slicing and dicing group of players. Well, I don’t know if there’s a worse matchup in the entire country for UNC.

With all that said, I don’t see the final score being more of a 7-point differential either way. I’ll go against the grain and tab Villanova though, and I’ll do it to the tune of 84-81.

Michigan State vs. UConn, well, all of you know I’m taking State here. MSU and UConn will play at a slower pace, but that’s not necessarily because MSU is imposing their will upon the Huskies, it’s because UConn is effective at both styles of play, and they don’t care. Truth be told, MSU is a damn good fast-break team, they just prefer to grind you because they know they’re tougher, and they know they can break you.

The difference will be Goran Suton. Simply put, his jump-shot will be the difference. It’ll pull Thabeet out of the lane and allow Kalin Lucas, one of the three fastest players in the country with the ball, to penetrate and kick to Summers/Allen/Suton. Suton may not be as much a factor as he has been in previous games on the stat sheet, but his presence alone will be the difference maker. Him and 40,000 people in the stadium bleeding green like you’ve never seen people bleed. The state of Michigan, and in particular the city of Detroit, is so starved for something positive that they will do everything in their power to push Michigan State to the brink.

And they will succeed. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be an epic battle. MSU nets 72, UConn scores 68.

In the finals, Reynolds will have T-Walt on him. God bless the kid – you don’t really understand the definition of hand-checking until you’ve watched Travis Walton play all-world defense for three years. Fouling them too much is the only concern, but officials tend to let the kids play it out for the national title. And, whenever the whistles aren’t singing, you pick the beast.

The beast, as we all have come to know too well, always seems to reside in the Big Ten.

Michigan State – 71
Villanova – 63

My two cents.

You sir, have a brain.

Unless they shoot lights out, they will need Thabeet grabbing offensive rebounds. I also fear Michigan St being sloppy. When they got real sloppy with the ball this year, they got beat.

That said, I pretty much agree with you, though im not sure Villanova can knock off the stupid darling Tar Heels. They will need to shoot better this time. Pittsburgh was overrated and got an easy run. Beating Duke was more impressive. Maybe UNC will be less serious after playing an overrated Oklahoma squad that has one legitimate good player.

Like I said, the Heels are the absolute favorite unless they eat themselves up

The thing is…they did it last year. Their defense may have actually looked more vulnerable in losses this year.

Sometimes, you just feel like Roy Williams is going to revert back to his Kansas coach-jobs in the four Final Fours he went to – and had nothing to show for it. Of course, this team is far more talented than any team he had in Lawrence – but it puts a totally different dynamic on the games when you have a unanimous front-runner for the title. There’s a pressure that isn’t usually there – and as we saw last year from the Heels, that’s a pressure that they are vulnerable to.

I still contend that Michigan State is lucky as fuck

they were 168th in the nation in FT shooting percentage and then went 24-31 from the line against USC. Which oddly it seemed like they were even more on the mark than they should’ve been.

You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.

by bluemax on Mar 31, 2009 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

'Course you do

I’m still laughing about how ‘easy of a draw’ USC had.

Sometimes, it’s just better to accept that you were dead wrong about the Big Ten, and in particular the Spartans, and move on. Villanova shot 22-23 from the line against Pittsburgh, well above anyone’s FT average this year – does that make them undeserving?

I’m sick of hearing this crock of shit about how lucky the team is – we played arguably the most talented team on our side of the bracket in round 2, beat an upstart Kansas squad that was playing their asses off in round 3, and totally obliterated the Big East (also known as the best conference of ALL TIME EVER YEAHYEAHYEAH) regular season and tournament champion.

So to suddenly

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Finishing thoughts without clicking accidentally is the way to do things right

*So to suddenly believe that UConn will wreck a team that plays physical (the closest thing to MSU on UConn’s schedule is Pittsburgh – how’d those two games go?) in front of their family, friends, and fellow Spartans probably isn’t the smartest decision.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're usually a top ten FT shooting team.

This year they were awful. Tom Izzo had a bad experience with a FT back in his playing days and makes it a focus for players to work on…so im sure they will get better, and they have lately.

But lucky? No way. MSU has played one of the most difficult schedules and didn’t have their best overall player for a small chunk. Not only that they have been inconsistent getting Delvon Roe in the swing of things as a starter.

When Michigan St is playing to their peak level, they are easily one of the best 3 teams in the country.

The lucky team is UNC. They had an easy road. LSU played in a horrible SEC conference. Gonzaga was a blah team when compared to the badasses. Oklahoma was overrated (really just Blake Griffin and guys that would be bench players on better teams). I think if Syracuse didn’t have their worst game of the year against Oklahoma, they could of ended UNC’s run. Dont get me wrong, UNC is one of the best 3 teams out there…but I really think Syracuse could of beaten them. And I hate Syracuse almost as much as I hate UNC.

A difference between 9% between a game and season average at the charity stripe, notable for its day-to-do rapid fluctuation, is absolutely nothing to point to and say 'lucky as fuck'.

That was my point for getting so jacked up.

That, and the total lack of respect on Selection Sunday continuing, even with stacks of evidence pointing to the contrary. Honestly, arguing in favor of a ‘lucky’ Spartans team may have been in vogue then, but figure it out. They’re a legitimate force.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 5:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was more than 9% though when the game was on the line

Yeah it evened out at the end but they were shooting way above their heads during that game.

You’ll have a hard time convincing me that if that game were replayed under the exact same conditions that MSU would win it again.

You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.

by bluemax on Apr 1, 2009 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's probably because Kalin Lucas and Goran Suton were on the line when it mattered

And USC was fouling the wrong people.

Lucas is an 82% FT shooter, Suton is an 85% FT shooter. Morgan certainly had his misses, and prior to the season he was 77%.

by cwel87 on Apr 1, 2009 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Crap.

North Carolina will be the decisive favorite, and they deserve to be. They totally walloped Michigan State in December.

But, what the hell. This one’s for Digger.

Michigan State – 78
UNC – 72

Wanted to drop by and wish you good luck, man.

If it wasn’t going to be me, I’d like nothing more than to see Villanova win. They play a fantastically entertaining style of basketball, and play it well. Hope your Final Four ends better than the last three for me.

That being said, I doubt I’ll watch the games. I wasn’t able to enjoy basketball last weekend, so I don’t see why it would be any different this weekend. Oh well. There’s always next year, right?

Is that John Calipari?

Im sorry. It sucks for me too. They’re right there with Villanova and Washington as the 3-5 favorite teams of mine.

Memphis will rebound, assuming he isn’t pryed away by Kentucky.

by Slica on Mar 31, 2009 2:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's gone.

I’ve been waiting for this day, and I can’t blame him. But it sucks. His top recruits all have clauses in their letters of intent that allow them to follow him.

With Cal, Memphis was a legit powerhouse year in and year out. Without him, they’re likely to revert back to the days of a few Top 25 finishes here and there and an occasional run at the Elite 8. I’ll always love Cal for what he gave us, but it’s a pretty crushing blow.

by acblue on Mar 31, 2009 2:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whoa

Looking at the time you posted that, I musta missed the news. I didn’t even think it was going to happen, just threw it out there.

That sucks. Sorry dude. Maybe Memphis can pry a nice up and comer from someone else. Its a shame Memphis is a stepping stone school, as they really built a nice program there.

Agreed 100%

They need to move.

by Slica on Mar 31, 2009 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who do you think replaces Cal?

I’m sure everyone else has heard about them courting Mike Anderson, but I’m not so sure if he’ll leave the Big 12 unless its for a SEC school.

Any idea of who else is on the short list?

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How cool would it be...

That my two teams, Kansas and Michigan St could win the championship back to back?

By the way, Michigan St is extremely deep, so unless Thabeet is able to clean up the glass against arguably the best rebounding team in the nation (#1 in rebounding margin)…I cant see UConn winning.

Villanova is one of the 5 teams I follow heavily every year, my 4th favorite overall. I hope they continue to play that wicked defense and knock down some shots to take out UNC. I do not want Cheater vs. Always Screwed (MSU) in the Championship game. We’re talking a 20 point blow out.

And for the record, the Big Ten does not suck. 7 teams in the tourney, 2 more were on the bubble and did major damage in the NIT. Purdue got screwed in the seeding and had enough talent to get to the Final Four. They just couldn’t get the run they needed in the UConn game.

There was nothing harder than watching my Jayhawks and Spartans go at it a couple rounds ago. To say ‘come on offense’ and ‘come on defense’ on every single play was tiring.

That said. I have MSU as a lock for the Championship game. If they get UNC, they lose. If they get Villanova, they win.

by Slica on Mar 31, 2009 1:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

UConn is a really good basketball team

It’s hard to say definitively that Michigan State will roll that matchup. While I love State’s game and current level of play, UConn absolutely has a chance at this.

Although, if we go by the mass media predictions, Michigan State is an absolute lock, considering they couldn’t have gotten every game more wrong in the Midwest from the get-go.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I dont see it as a lock or anything, I just think matchup wise, Michigan St should be favored.

I think picking who the best team is pointless as the tournament is about matchups, and who can adapt to the many styles they will face.

I just think its a better matchup for MSU than UConn. I cant see UConn being able to score much with Walton always locking his man down and the overall good defense they play. Thabeet is talented, but unless he gets them offensive rebounds, they will need to shoot a high percentage. I cant see them doing it.

by Slica on Mar 31, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do agree

It’s ridiculous to me on every single level that UConn is favored by 4 points. I’ll say 85% of the time, MSU is going to cover that.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The way college players have been smart about this lately has been almost startling

Now I remember what a shame it is to see a raw, undeveloped talent jumping too early.

I wonder when kids like this will realize NBA coaches really don’t do a good job at all of player development unless they’re a ridiculous talent? College is really where you hone your game and harness your gifts. And then you get drafted in the lottery and get paid lots of money, instead of being a sixth man and getting no real development until you get game action, which will take a few years and maybe even longer since you cannot prove yourself worthy during practices, because you haven’t had enough game experience.

And the cycle continues on.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Secondly, is there any other major sport where the college version is markedly better than the professional?

Truthfully, who among us that enjoys basketball, and sport in general, doesn’t prefer college basketball to the NBA? Is it even close?

With these new 'safety' rules implemented this year, I have a feeling that balance of power may shift

Especially considering Mark Dantonio brings joy to my life and not constant crushing disappointment.

I remember watching the NW-MSU basketball game earlier this year

And while everyone else was flipping the fuck out in Lansing, I was rolling my eyes, thinking, “Kevin Coble played the best 40 minutes of basketball he will ever play in his life, and Michigan State just collectively had the worst 40 minutes of basketball they could possibly play. I’ll take a seven-point loss out of this.”

After what I saw Northwestern do to the conference for the rest of the year, let’s just say I felt more than vindicated.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will not enjoy the NFL whatsoever this year.

Fuck you Jay Cutler. I understand you’re upset that the Broncos considered trading you, but grow the fuck up. You are a professional athlete making millions of dollars. If you are that mad that you were discussed in a trade, then stick down the Broncos throats by playing the next two seasons then leaving in free agency. You are a goddamn professional. Act like it. Enjoy playing in Detroit you son of a bitch. Oh yeah, Jake was better.

While I agree

Josh McDaniels should have realized going out and treating his franchise like the New England Patriots regime was a bit overzealous, especially given his age and lack of overall experience. You’ve got to create a rapport with your players and make them feel at least pseudo comfortable in your system and leadership.

My advice? Sign the hell out of Jeff Garcia, draft a solid QB for the future in the second-fourth round, and pick Aaron Curry with the choice you net from Detroit. See? Things aren’t all bad.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I blame McDaniels as well.

No one was blameless in this scenario. I just think Cutler deserves the most blame because from all accounts McD was perfectly willing to get through this and bury the hatchet.

Yeah, I’d be okay with Garcia, Curry and a decent QB (Freeman? Harrell?)

Go Nova

by dbroncos31 on Mar 31, 2009 8:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course McDaniels was willing to bury the hatchet; he has nothing to concern himself with

It’s the players that now have their asses on the stove. The face he came in and tried to change things up before even holding a team meeting does not make matters any better.

Honestly, I have no idea how an NFL coach is as oblivious as he was during the whole fiasco. The things he should have done are all pretty basic, standard forms of communication and respect. And he didn’t do any of it.

Maybe I should have just applied for the Denver Broncos head coaching vacancy and see where I’d have gotten with it. Lord knows I’m younger and apparently more prodigious than what McDaniels has shown the world in his first few months.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd truly go Curry -> Jackson -> a suitable need position -> Harrell with Garcia locked and loaded

That would actually make things appear reasonable on the team-building front.

by cwel87 on Mar 31, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As big of a baby as Cutler has been

It’s hard not to blame McDaniels for this, especially since he lied to Cutler after the fact about not being the one to initiate talks on the possibility of trading him.

If he really thought Matt Cassel was a better option than Jay Cutler he’s not very smart either.

by OlSalty on Mar 31, 2009 8:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. It's one thing for a guy with established rapport to go out and see what's what.

For a new guy, ostensibly trying to earn Cutler’s trust, to go out and toss him onto the freeway is a horrible way to build goodwill.

Speaking of which, I hope GMZ picks a horrible way to build goodwill with Batista.

Deal with it?

I took everyone’s shit on Selection Sunday. And I mean everyone’s. My points about a team going 11 deep, that had scoring balance, that had an amazingly great coach, they were not only dispatched, they were rather openly mocked.

Well, now I get my due.

Congrats Michigan St. and UNC

It’s such a tough loss bc they were just better than us and the only thing we could have done was hit more shots…God I’m so disappointed for our seniors, Dwayne, Dante, Shane, Frank…man I was hoping that this wouldnt end like this. What a year for us, and hopefully we can even come close to this in the future.

also, cwel87, the Big East was incredible this year.If you were to make a Top 10 for this year, Nova, Cuse, Pitt Louisville and UConn would all be there. so having 5 top ten teams is pretty good. just because they didnt make it to the ship in the end doesnt diminish a great season.

I love this team, but its tough for it to end

The Big East was great

It was definitely the best conference this year. It wasn’t even close to the best conference ever. When a conference has 16 teams, it will always field good-to-great talent.

Thank the hype-machine in Bristol for crowning the Big East before they played their way to a coronation. And by the way, I have great respect for Jay Wright, Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, Jim Boeheim, Jamie Dixon, Bob Huggins, and the rest of the excellent coaches and players in the Big East. I’m just stating an all-out fact when I say the way the Big East was discussed, it was as though it was the Eastern Conference. And that simply was not fair to the rest of college basketball.

Case in point.

The 2009 Big East was the best conference in the history of college basketball
