Dodgers sign Manny

After multiple failed attempts, Ramirez and the Dodgers agreed to a two-year, $45 million deal on Tuesday.
...The outfielder is expected to travel to Los Angeles tonight. Ramirez would then report to the Dodgers' spring training camp in Ranch Camel.

Wikipedia Fact of the Day:

The 1951 Polish-Soviet territorial exchange or Polish-Soviet border adjustment treaty of 1951 was the largest in Polish history and one of the largest border adjustments in post-war European history. 480 km² were exchanged between the People's Republic of Poland and the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union gave up a part of the Ukrainian SSR's Drohobytskyi Raion: the city of Ustrzyki Dolne and the villages of Czarna (Ukrainian: Чорна Chorna), Shevchenko (whose name was changed back to the Polish Lutowiska in 1957), Krościenko, Bandrów Narodowy, Bystre and Liskowate. All of that territory became part of the Krosno Voivodeship in 1975, and of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship on 1999-01-01.

So, it's the same damn contract both sides rejected?

I was looking forward to the Dodgers getting wise and start dropping their offer.

Not really

especially not in this market.

Even assuming the market for his skill set hadn't tanked,

he’d need to be a 4- to 5-win player for the next two years. It’s not out of the question, but I’m not putting my money on it.

If Fenway really has affected his defense

than he might be able to sustain 4-5 WAR a year. Also, and I hate to say this, he really will bring in a more ticket sales.

How the fuck Manny didn't have a market

after the season he put up is puzzling.

Guess it’s a bad idea to be a grade a douchenozzle.

That's the hilarious part to me.

Supposedly, many teams were concerned about handing Manny a big long term deal because they’re wary of his antics. So what negotiating tactic does Scott Boras employ? One that makes Manny look like a jitterbug.

by Matthew on Mar 3, 2009 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

I think that Boras' tactic

was to make the Dodgers believe that the only way that Manny wouldn’t be a bitch is if he was got the deal that he wanted. That would explain why they were seemingly bidding against themselves.

Yup.

Once again, kudos to Boras for getting a team to outbid itself to a great degree.

Bay sucked as a Pirate too though.

His sample size with the Red Sox was too small to blame the difference on the stadium. He’s not a very good fielder to begin with.

Fenway does massively inflate doubles to LF, though, doesn't it?

Flyballs that would otherwise be outs hit the monster and become doubles, but no outfielder could have had a play on them.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

This just in

Red Sox have signed Inspector Gadget to play LF

This is a little on the old side...

…but The Fielding Bible has Manny’s basic +/- at -19 at home and -12 on the road from 2003 to 2005. I can’t find it mentioned what typical home/road splits are. (Like a lot of these splits, there seems to be a lot of year-to-year variation. In ’05 alone, Manny was -13 at home and -1 on the road.)

Bleh

I knew it would end this way. Ned Colletti doesn’t have the balls to not give Manny what he wants.

I don’t think I like a single move the Dodgers made this off season.

You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.

Needs to be longer.

Is that.....CAIRO?

Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

No kidding!

Cairo nearly hit it to BFE!

Cairo? BFE?

… Can’t decide if I want to laugh or not at a pun that corny… But kudos either way.

I almost went with...

Headline: “Ball from Cairo Launched to BFE!”

But, yeah, that upped the corn factor a bit too much.
