Morrow in the bullpen... FOREVER
Big news out of camp. Moments ago, I spoke to Brandon Morrow after he'd thrown a bullpen session and he told me (and Shannon Drayer and Tim Booth of AP) that he plans to be a full-time closer from now on. Not just this month, not just this season. For good.
"I feel good about it,'' he said. "I feel back home.''
Via Baker.
I thought this was some kind of joke... but no the article continues to talk about how it was Morrow's decision last week. Also comments on why Wakamatsu said what he said and the role Morrow's diabetes played in the decision. This is a bad day for Mariner Baseball.

If it's what he wants to do
More power to him, I guess. His concerns about his health seem fairly legitimate.
On the plus side…RRS!

Very true...
How the heck did that happen?

Not a great day for first round picks.
And come June, losing out on Strasburg isn’t going to help any.

So many things running through my head right now...
Mostly bad.
Positives:
We have a dominant closer
Bullpen depth
RRS can now start full time
Negatives:
We have a dominant closer (unnecessary for a rebuilding team)
We lose a potentially dominant starter
Starting depth
We used a first round pick on a setup man(Fields)
Feel free to add to the list

Let's hope...
RRS isn’t hurt, he’s been throwing 83-87 all spring and most scouts think he looks injured.
Because then our rotation might become Felix – Bedard – Silva – Washburn – Batista… and that looks familiar.

I think that's exactly what we can expect to see
and it ain’t too pretty. But let’s hope the last 3 can be average-ish, and the top 2 can be healthy and dominant…. that’s a legit formula for a good club.

Two number one draft picks wasted
on 2 closers. Not to mention we have Cordero.
Waste of talent.

I'm convinced GMZ is being held hostage by an evil force
Because none of this makes any sense

This all goes back to throwing him into the bullpen in the first place
I can’t imagine that Morrow would possibly feel this way if he’d been starting in the minors all along.

Who gives a shit how Morrow feels?
Two weeks ago he was stoked to be a starter and never wanted to go back to closing.
This just doesn’t add up.

I think Tony Reagins and Billy Beane are holding GMZ at gunpoint
It’s the only possible explanation

First career start- nearly a no hitter
The following season he gives up on being a starter for good? Today is the first black mark on the GMZ regime.

I don't think Zduriencik had anything to do with this

GMZ still has veto power though, or so I'd hope

How do you veto that decision?
It’s up to Morrow. If he doesn’t think he has the arm for starting, and his diabetes is giving him trouble, you can’t just say “no” to that.
by Jeff on Mar 29, 2009 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If the diabetes is really the issue, then I'm OK with it
But otherwise I think the team has enough invested in him that they have the right to say “We’re starting you anyway to start the season and we’ll go from there”

My gut tells me that this is a product of our current bullpen situation
..more so than his health or anything like that. Maybe its just me, but I haven’t heard his diabetes brought up in a while.
by CKel on Mar 29, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If diabetes were a issue there would be no reason for either side bring it up.
It would negatively affect his value in both terms of salary and in trades.
by Robert on Mar 29, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Still
I’m not necessarily talking about Morrow or the FO bringing it up, I’m talking about on here. Sort of like our concern about Clement’s status behind the plate always being brought up. I’ve never seen it raised as an issue on here when it came to Morrow starting.

Is the concern about diabetes endurance?
In other words, he is fine pitching one inning 3-4 days a week, but gets too exhausted when going 5+ innings every fifth day?
by Wilder. on Mar 29, 2009 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, diabetes affects endurance
It’s hard to control in the best of circumstances, now ask a top-flight athlete to go out and regulate it while other factors like stress and pressure of being on a big league mound come into play. He MIGHT be able to go 5+ every 5 days but it is still hard to control the blood sugar levels and if they get low, one can pass out. As a reliever, he’s able to control it much better with less pressure to have to go 5+ innings.

Did we know he had diabetes when we drafted him?
And if we did, should we have seen this coming?
by Decatur on Mar 29, 2009 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There are a couple of guys who have been major league starters with Type I Diabetes...
…so this wasn’t necessarily inevitable, but I don’t know what the overall risk level would have been.

I called this on draft day.
I tried my ass off to be positive about the M’s drafting him, I really did.
But I saw this coming a mile away LONG before they drafted him.
Had we drafted Miller and had he flamed out as much as he pretty much has, I wouldn’t be as ticked as I am now.
This signature space for rent.

On the bright side
Felix and Bedard might actually win some of those 2-1 ballgames, instead of having our bullpen cough them all up.
by johnbai on Mar 29, 2009 4:07 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That's assuming Felix and Bedard go 8 innings in those games
..with the way our bullpen guys have looked this spring. Sure it’s spring training, but these guys are fighting for jobs

Not signing Strasburg on your birthday
and allowing him to re-enter the draft when the Angels have the #1 pick seems like it might be particularly floorish
by Robert on Mar 30, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the other hand
The Angels coming in last place sounds quite pleasing

Nah, the Nats just had another horrible season and picked up Figgins on the FA Market. :-P
