Open WBC Semifinals Thread
Potential Cy Young candidate Carlos Silva is pitching for Venezuela today.
========================== Schedule ==========================
Saturday 3/21
06:00pm PDT --- Korea vs. Venezuela [ESPN]
Sunday 3/22
05:00pm PDT --- United States vs. Japan [ESPN]
============================================================
Monday 3/23
06:00pm PDT --- The Finals [ESPN]
============================================================
Silva allowed one earned run in 11 innings in the first two rounds, while Hernandez pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings. Hernandez will be available in relief in the semifinals, if necessary, and could start the final if Venezuela advances.
In other news, Peavy is okay with Oswalt starting in the semis. That's good to know.
"I have no problems with it," Peavy said after the U.S. worked out at the Academy on the campus of Compton Community College only about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. "I'm looking forward to starting the championship game. I have a little bit of history with them. They decided to start Roy. I think it's going to be a good move."
Oswalt, the Astros right-hander, will face Daisuke Matsuzaka, Japanese manager Tatsunori Hara confirmed on Friday.
These last few games should be fun. Unless it's Korea vs. Japan again because holy crap they've played each other too many times.

Pin, or whoever has the better score at the end.
Also if the other person is unable to fight or cries out in/for pain/help.
You got slurved bitch.
Pin, obviously, but the scoring is what my question is.
And I’m not asking it anymore either. Why the hell is wrestling still on ESPN?? Like I give a fuck.
You get points for a takedown, attempted pin, escaping a pin.
There is more stuff you can get points for but yeah…
I was confused to I was like so this is how they play baseball now… Here comes Felix with a chair!
You got slurved bitch.
Seriously, if I could watch real NCAA/Freestyle Wrestling. I wouldn't care as much about baseball.
Wrestling was my life for about 6 years. I miss the day-to-day life of it.
Dang.
I kept checking ESPNNews. forgot about Classic.
Actually I don’t recall if I get Classic these days. Doesn’;t matter now, as we came back in time to see Silva look like Silva. He’s their best pitcher, you know.
Actually I thought using Silva against Korea made sense.
You need Hernandez when you’re going up against the US or Japan.
~Till the Halo burns out...
There's a sight I know I'm going to see WAY too many times this year... -_-;
~Till the Halo burns out...
Look at Joe Morgan and Jon Miller blaming Lopez
for muffing Abreu’s throw, but it was SCUTARO who was covering the bag, not Lopez. They haven’t even said a single good thing about Jose Lopez, even though he’s been the WBC’s best hitter by far.
Probably because they want to draft Lopez for their fantasy team.
Don’t want to give their preferences away.
Felix just crucified the strike one
his pitch location made a perfect cross on ESPN’s strike one tracker.
ex mariners always beat current mariners
that was so predictable
Do we get regression of Silva during the regular season?
I mean, Italy and the Nederlands was like Spring Training. This is like opening day for him!
"Silva turned the whole league into a batting champion last season."
Bwahahaha. Never thought of it that way.
ESPN has stopped trying to be polite
they never really mentioned Silva’s 2008 season until that 3-run homer blew it open.
Didn't Silva used to have a sinker?
What hell ever happened to that?
We have Angel fan(s) in attendance.
Show some class.
It's your site. You guys are allowed to remember your moments of glory.
Besides, all I have to do is think “Ring, Ring, Ring,” And it’s not as painful anymore. :-P
~Till the Halo burns out...
The one thing Jeff didn't mention in his World Series thing
was how all sins past and future by the key people involved in winning it get forgiven. Forever. Seriously, if Carlos Silva by some miracle came through with 8 innings of shutout baseball in the winning game of the World Series, it wouldn’t how much he sucked for the rest of his career with you, he’d be untouchable.

No! Don't bring Felix in now!
I’m sure Silva just had to get over the jitters. He will be fine now!
Don’t rush Felix in.
Steve Phillips is the Homer Simpson of Baseball.
Do the opposite of whatever he says, and you will be ok in life (or baseball).
At least he can hit though.
That’ll be nice to have out of the DH spot for a change.

Not to mention that it's more views the network can claim for their advertisers if they'd just show
what’s being shown on TV. It seems like it ought to be really simple for MLB to work this out so people could watch everything online. But apparently they’re just too lazy.
~Till the Halo burns out...

The mlb.tv broadcast I'm watching is the ESPN feed.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 21, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions
That's what I'm saying.
Since it’s the ESPN feed, playing the same commercials that they show on TV, why would they care if you watch it online or on TV? It shouldn’t matter, and therefore the only people keeping you from doing so with blackout rules is MLB itself. Which is retarded, since you are paying them for mlb.tv.
~Till the Halo burns out...
There actually aren't commercials; I'm guessing it's the European feed.
But they could simulcast the commercials and it would be fine. The total stupidity of it all is why it annoys me.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 21, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions
I have no problems paying for goods and services.
If I could watch the game on TV and mlb.tv I would watch it on TV because my TV is bigger than my computer. But I don’t have ESPN because fuck Broadstripe and double-fuck DirecTV. So why can’t I watch using the service I paid for? It’s dumb.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 21, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions
I know, but I'm in a bad mood and I like bitching about Broadstripe and DirecTV.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 21, 2009 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, I'm in a bad mood, too.
I just spent two hours playing poker. I build up a decent size chip stack. I get thrown pocket aces. I raise. Someone comes over-the-top of me. I push all-in. He calls and has me covered.
He shows 10-10. I’m ecstatic. Flop ?-10-? (I don’t remember the two other cards because my brain exploded).
An ace never came on the turn or river. But what pisses me off is that I play for fucking hours for a $35,000 pot, play tight, build a nice stack, and lose to that piece of shit. FUUUUUUCK!!!
(Back to the ballgame, I want to kill someone.)
I have no idea what any of this means except $35,000 and wow that blows.

I'm beginning to think Venezuelans have really good food.
Silva, Felix, Lopez, and Cabrera have always been linked to weight issues. Abreu, Ordonez, Mora, and Hernandez could easily been as well. It does not surprise me a relief pitcher would look like he is having a heart attack.

this thing has just been too damn long with too many repeat matchups for me to really care
Just don't think it's really proving who has the best baseball... I personally think Japan would
get destroyed if they had to face a real US, DR, or Venezuelan team.
I was into it for awhile, but I lost interest after US-PR cause that was the last meaningful game… it’s just been rematches since that then for seeding purposes.. then last nights game had no juice..

Dice-K's thrown a lot of pitches:
anyone know how good of a bullpen Japan has? Are Okajima and Saito both playing for Japan in the WBC?
Thats definitely a problem. But not why we're getting pounded early.
Heck, put him in LF if anything. Dunn’s a pile of suck outside of the batters box.
I fucking hate you Mariners
Yeah, at least leave him in left.
If anyone can adjust on the fly, I’d say it’s Braun. He at least has the athleticism to make up for some of the weirdness of playing out of position. Taking a guy who’s already a butcher and moving him around the field seems destined for failure.
You’re right, Dunn’s not the reason the U.S. is losing. But a competent right fielder could have gotten to the ball Iwamura hit.
Then again, maybe Johnson’s thinking was that with a hard-throwing pitcher on the mound more balls would go to left. But still, when I see that Dunn is playing right and Jimmy Rollins is the DH, I can’t help but think some better decisions could have been made.
I'm trying to see both sides of the issue.
But yes, there were just so many better options in an elimination game with a championship in the balance.
I didn't see the game
But not starting Victorino in right, and more so DHing Rollins is fucking ridiculous.
The next time they do this team USA has to commit to winning, and has to commit to playing like a team. The WBC isn’t the fucking all star game and shouldn’t be treated as such. My country has shamed me. >:(

But it does add to the case.

Japanese your game is through.
Roberts is coming after you!
AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
Joe Morgan needs to shut the fuck up.
Fixed your post.

Wow. Team USA's hitters want it too bad.

If he throws under 30 pitches, he can start tomorrow, I think

I think...
It’s he can relieve, but can’t start.
Favor the Bold
GAWD.
I wish Hara would stop playing players out of position.
FUJIKAWA.
Favor the Bold
Rollins makes that throw when he's dead.

Because he is captain intangibles, so he has ALREADY made up for that play somehow.

Joe Morgan is such a pathetic shill.
“I’m going to call that a forced error.” Of course you will, you hack. That ball was two steps to his right.
You mean
the Non-Arod Yankee division bias
The idea was he was so fast, Jeter panicked, and threw faster than he needed to.
It’s bullshit, but opposing announcers say that with regards to errors made against Ichiro running all the time.

Talking with a friend about Jeter.
He asked me if Jeter was so bad at SS when were the Yankees going to move him. It seemed like Jeter might be sent to LF in 2 or 3 years, but that was the best I could think of.
ICHIRO!
The USA deserves to lose when Derek Jeter makes plays like that.

STOP BEING SELFISH!
God I wish I can grab Ichiro! by the neck and throw him up against the wall.
You got slurved bitch.
I know, it is kind of amazing.
It is like seeing the stars out in the country after always seeing them in a city.
You suddenly realize how beautiful the stars could be.

HAHAH, uhhhh...Dunn?
I fucking hate you Mariners
You can't always see the subtle effects of outfield defense on the game.
Then sometimes you can.
Dunn just didn't give Adam.
I fucking hate you Mariners
In a nutshell.
I fucking hate you Mariners
It's a total disgrace that Davey Johnson is playing Jeter at SS and Dunn in RF
No wonder this man is out of baseball
Not like he has much of a choice...
No players.
Favor the Bold
Rollins is DHing.
Johnson has been hamstrung for this tournament, but he had better options than the lineup he put out there today.
Rollins, Victorino, Granderson?
Dunn or Longo should’ve DH’d, Jeter shouldn’t have seen today’s game from anywhere but the bench.

If I were Strasburg
I’d just tell the Nationals: “Seriously? You want me to spend the next six years of my life playing for a team whose last GM looks headed for jail and whose premier player is Adam Dunn? I’m going back to college if you draft me.”
Maybe Japan brings him into a mid-to-late innings jam
And have him pitch the last 2-4 innings. I would be impressed if they used him in both a high leverege situation and got him to chew thru some innings.
You could say the same
for Carlos Silva

Good, two teams that actually give a fuck made it
I’m so glad the US got knocked out; with the defence they played they deserved it.
I have to agree.
I was never “rah rah USA” during this whole tournament, and I think it just doesn’t mean as much to Americans — both players and fans. And you know what, I think I’m OK with that. But it’s hard to get up for a team that sees this as a warmup when there are so many athletes from other countries treating it like an international competition with pride on the line.
That’s not to say that the U.S. athletes weren’t playing hard. Just that they weren’t our best athletes, and the whole thing just felt . . . political, if that makes sense. Everyone needs their at-bats, their innings, lots of GMs watching Davey Johnson very closely, etc.
The original team looked great on paper
It’’s all usage and PT allotments.
I’d rather they commit to 11 or so core players who are regulars and then fill out the bench out with scrubs, then have to do the little league PT alotments. I think there’s an argument to be had that a Braun/Granderson/Ludwick (why did they want Hawpe over him???), Wright/Rollins/Pedrioa/Youkillis McCann/Ianetta lineup with Jones at DH was really fucking nifty. The problem was 1) injuries 2) PT fulfillment to the ML clubs
Which is why you'd be much better off having the WBC in fall
after the World Series so teams aren’t so worried about getting a player nicked up for a month or so.

I don't know what the answer is,
but I’m intrigued by Dave’s idea of holding it instead of the All-Star Break. I figure MLB will never go for it, but it’s an interesting thought.
I must say, though,
that I would be much more excited about voting for “All-Stars” if I knew they were going to represent the country in an international competition, rather than play in a glorified scrimmage against their friends.
