2009 NCAA Tournament Day 2 Open Thread
Welcome to Day 2 of the Madness!
Some fantastic games last night, lucky escapes by certain higher seeds. Hope today is just as good. Should be some interesting stuff, not too many 1 and 2 seeds playing today.
If the morning games are any indication...
Sorry for not having any deep thoughts today, I'm just trying to get to the limit so we can have a discussion thread

Damn you, Tennessee.
Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

Damn, that was half way down!
Too bad, Wilkinson.
Uh, no it wasn't.
Guess I need the damn HQ player….
Hell of a shot to end that one by Utah St.
Didn’t matter, but still…

Hmmm not much in this second pod of games besides Devils - Owls
looks like time for a beer & lunch run
And my bracket goes up in flames.
I had Utah St. and North Dakota St. in the Sweet 16.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
The best thing about the NCAA tourney is that you don't have to know jack shit about basketball to succeed as long as you follow these rules:
1-4s never get upset in the first round
5s & 6s rarely get upset in the first round
7-10 seed first round games are a tossup
1s and 2s almost never lose to teams seeded lower than 3
The final four is almost always made of 1s and 2s
Wikipedia actually lists
the percentage of times each upset has occurred in the first round.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
The bracket guy in me hates Wake Forest
but the Arizona fan in me says SWEET 16 COMING UP
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Sweet. I'm still 17/20.
Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

Upset watch WVU
Didn’t a lot of you guys have them going far?

No, but if Mizzou loses as well it wouldn't matter
Don’t think too many had Cornell or Dayton in the sweet 16….
Cornell is a terrible matchup for Missouri
you beat big athletic running teams by out disciplining them and using their defensive aggressiveness against them, and that’s exactly what Cornell will try to do to them.
They won’t win, but it should be an interesting game
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Still, I think a lot of teams that rely on discipline as opposed to talent
can get really frustrated by a well-executed press. A pressing team can blow a lot of Princeton/Cornell-type teams out of the water early, whereas looser teams that like to run can find holes and score quickly.
But on the other hand if you let a team like that stay in the game and figure out how to get the ball up the court
the pressure moves to the running team in the second half and they have to execute a fluid offense, whereas the little guy has no pressure and a designed offense to attack an aggressive defense with

I am conflicted on whether I am supposed to be rooting for Cornell or not.
Am I supposed to support my conference or root against a rival?
Always root against a rival
if not for my bracket, I’d be rooting my ass off for Boston College tonight
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions
That's what I figured.
Then again, Cornell is a “rival” in the sense that Canada is a rival to the US in sports that aren’t hockey.
That's true
who is your big rival anyway? For me, I only actively root against usc and Berkeley at this point
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Eh, I don't know.
I’d root for a rival if we’re talking smaller conference because it’s nice to get your league some respect.
Of course, it’s not like the Ivy league is in dire need of recognition so that might change things.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions
They revoke your degree at USC
if you ever root for the bruins. Even when I pick the bruins to win I still root against them.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
That lovely piece of paper I have up on my wall
surely represents SOMETHING.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
License to operate a deep frier doesn't count as a degree.

Oh no, I'm not rooting for them, no way in hell
I’m simply not actively rooting against them

Hmmm every time I make fun of Derek Glasser, he has a monster game the next time out
need to not make fun of Derek Glasser anymore, I guess
Derek Glasser is the WFB of college basketball
Fuck Derek Glasser.
I wish SSD were here
because I’m actually not sure whether or not he would make fun of Derek Glasser or defend him WFB style
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions
His bullshit tough guy/soccer flop artist thing
That he pulled against UW in the Pac-10 tourney really pissed me off. Maybe a more apt description would be the Brian Russel of College Basketball.
Weird observation but I always thought Dionte Christmas wore #25
would have seemed more fitting
We really should have set an over/under on the number of Christmas Time jokes in this broadcast
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions
God those were terrible
Even the multiple non-basketball fans in the office at the time were facepalming on those jokes

Beer of day 2 - Kona Pipleline Pipeline Porter
verdict, 2 beers in? Outstanding!
Pipeline Porter is pretty good stuff.
I really want to try their Kona Coffee Imperial Stout.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
It's pretty good, and I say this as someone who doesn't like coffee.
It’s a very solid brewer, overall. I don’t like everything they do (the pale ale is bad, at least to me), but they make a number of very solid beers.
I’m still pissed Cheney Stadium stopped selling longboard.
Is it available anywhere around here?
I’ve never seen it. I would imagine you can get it in Hawaii and my mom and sister are going there next week so I might see if they can pick some up for me.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions
It makes me sad that so many good beers are easy to find in the PNW and hard to find in CA
and vice versa. For example, every BevMo in a 100 mile radius from me that I’ve been to has essentially Kona’s full line
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah it's pretty weird.
I understand it with brewers like Russian River or Alesmith in CA or Ninkasi or Iron Horse in the PNW but it still blows. I’m planning on buying a suitcase full of Speedway Stout when I’m in CA.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I just bought myself a bottle when I was buying the Kona at BevMo
it’s been a while since I had it.
by seattlebruin on Mar 20, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions
I hate Washington's Liquor Laws because we can't have stores like BevMo.
Bottleworks (as awesome as it is) could never afford to stock all the stuff BevMo does.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions
We also need way more Mid/East representation.
Bells, Three Floyds, Founders, etc
Absolutely.
Bog Fish Head and Coney Island are pretty much the only east coast beers you can find around here (save Ommegang and Unibroue which is kind of a different thing.)
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh yeah I forgot about Southern Tier being East Coast.
Choklat is amazing of course. What do you think of Gemini?
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions
It's good but didn't live up to my expectations.
Hop 15 is way better.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Hop 15 is in my top 5 or so favorite IPAs ever.
Possibly top 3 even.
It's pretty tremendous.
Port makes awesome stuff. Wipe Out and Shark Attack are great.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I have PTY and 120 with the same ranking.
Hard to determine if I prefer one over the other given their completely different purposes.
I've got to think 120 is a strong ale.
It’s just not at all like other IPAs.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions
Wait do they actually have Younger at Uber now?
I skimmed and missed the Y.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions
Well I'm forgetting all sorts of shit.
It’s funny because Victory is one of my favorite brewers.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't know how much I'd like it now,
but I used to drink a lot of #9 when I lived in Philly.
Me either - my choices in beer have certainly changed
over the last 5 years. It was a good “hanging out by the river in the summer” beer. I mostly drank it in Vermont and the choices were Magic Hat, Harpoon, or mass produced piss in a bottle.
They had a few varieties at Winco for a while, but I haven't checked in a few weeks.
I think it was the Porter, the Pale Ale, and something else I can’t remember right now.
Yeah, my local supermarket carries a few varieties
Kona brewing has amazing distro for Longboard, Firerock and a few others. But if you want the coffee imperial stout, their steam beer (OK, I didn’t even know they did this) or their blonde ale, etc., it’s pretty hard to find.
(My local supermarket has a very crappy beer selection, so it’s noticeable that they carry a few Kona beers).
Really? A QFC has decent beer?
Holy shit.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Fantastic.
That’s close to my house and has parking too.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Think I’ll swing by there on my way home. Madison Market just don’t cut it for beer selection.

Ohhhhhhhh
gotta know where you are on the court!
If this guy doesn't say
“Christmas only comes once a year” before the end of the broadcast I will be so disappointed.
If I had 20-something pick in the draft this year
I’d take Dionte Christmas in a heartbeat. And then petition ABC to get on the Christmas day doubleheader
If only there were a Nathan Hanukkah playing somewhere in college BB

Also Jerry West’s kid!

Once WKU won last night and my perfect bracket was ruined I stopped caring.

I'm suddenly grateful I don't follow college basketball
because everyone around my cubicle is complaining about how their brackets have been destroyed today.
I'm in good shape still
no one who lost was a team I had going far.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
I'm still in reasonably good shape
My only peril is in the West region, if Missouri or Memphis lose I’m hosed but otherwise I’m good so far.

I was especially glad to see the fourth-best team in the ACC was almost as good as the seventh-best in the Big Ten.
Almost.
You may be somewhat right
but the way you present your arguments is the problem. Obviously the Big 10 doesn’t suck as much as people have been saying but every other conference isn’t horrible in comparison.
by Mariner John on Mar 21, 2009 11:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Never said that every other conference was horrible in comparison
Just the ACC.
And the fact is that I had to so vehemently defend the Big Ten that my points were coming off as ludicrous and terribly biased. It just was not good judgment to believe the Big Ten sucked based on games they played against each other, when they had proven themselves more than worthy during the non-conference portion of the season.
Pretty, finesse-oriented basketball may be pretty, but it doesn’t win games unless it’s really pretty. Ugly, physical, nose-breaking basketball wins games, especially when talent levels are similar.
I wouldn't feel bad at all about that, absolutely nobody agreed with me anywhere
Plus, like I said before, it’s natural to dislike ugly basketball. But it does win, and being aware of that footnote is key when trying to wade your way through the NCAA tournament field year-in, year-out.

by .Taylor on Mar 20, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Seriously though
To those of you who picked North Carolina to win it all in a runaway – the ACC might as well be the WCC.
Beware of Bulldogs.
Beware of my retardation level, too
I don’t know what in God’s name made me want to trust Mark Few again.
So should I be concerned I have Nova and UConn in the finals?
It was an office pool where no one really knew anything…so I picked a sleeper team like Villanova to reach the finals because you get bonus points for having teams reach certain levels. But they took a dump and almost lost the opener. I hope they play much better tomorrow. If they beat UCLA I’ll have some confidence they can take Pittsburgh/Ok St.
I fucking hate you Mariners
If there's one thing March Madness has taught any one of us, ever
It’s that your teams aren’t out ‘til they’re out.
