OTFP: Abandoned Places Edition

Before going any further, let's take a look at some new OFTOP rules given to us by Matthew (subject to change at any time):

Don't post a new OTFPOTD until the last one hits ~750 posts or is buried 10 fanposts down.

It's okay to comment in an older off-topic fanpost, we all can see when there are new comments.

That out of the way, here are some neat links for those of you who aren't feeling the madness of the month.

20 abandoned cities

24 ghost towns

Abandoned theaters, parks, and schools

7 abandoned cities and towns in America

7 more abandoned cities and towns in America

Web Urbanist has all sorts of links like this.

Don't forget, the Seattle Sounders FC opens up their first regular season tonight. Watch it live on ESPN2.

Guess everyone is preoccupied with the multiple sports games today. NCAA, MLS, ST….

I'll be perfectly honest

I still haven’t found it inside me to get excited over the MLS.

I'm "excited" because it's always fun to have a new sports team in town,

but I won’t be truly excited until I get to attend a game and find out if it really turns my crank or not.

Question for the more automotive smart people here.

The clutch in my Celica has started to slip so I need to replace it. Having never done this before, how much pain and suffering should I expect to go through to replace the clutch in a front wheel drive car?

by BrianL on Mar 19, 2009 1:05 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, the Clubman

Not a bad looking rig, though I’ve heard it’s a bit sluggish and doesn’t drive like it’s on rails because of the added weight and size, which kinda nukes most of the purpose of driving a Mini

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's definitely a sweet looking rig

But the whole purpose of the Mini is to be small, incredibly agile, and quick as hell (especially in an “S” model). Going larger and using the same powerplants just seems to go against the purpose, if you ask me

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I also prefer the coupe.

I guess I’m the only one who’s not too big a fan of the way the Clubman’s appearance. It’s pretty on its own, but it looks awkward compared to coupe.

You aren't alone on that at all

As I’ve said, it isn’t bad looking, but by slapping the “Mini” badge on it the point is immediately lost

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably wise.

I might run it over to my mechanic later today. Might as well have him take a look at the exhaust and power steering issues I’ve been having as well.

by BrianL on Mar 19, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Doing it yourself?

Plenty of pain and suffering, my friend. That is not a terribly easy thing to do if you aren’t mechanically proficient. I did it on my ’86 Prelude way back and it took me about 8 hours, and I ended up having to borrow a tool called a “pickle fork.” At that point I was ready to give up

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

I thought my dad was fucking with me when he told me the name of the tool. It’s for removing ball joints, if I remember correctly (this was 7 years ago or so). And I had to do that because I basically had to remove the entire lower portion of the left suspension to get to the clutch.

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

And another question

what’s a good ballpark estimate of what I’ll end up paying to have this done?

by BrianL on Mar 19, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, the part should only be about $150 at the max

And you’re probably looking at 6 hours of labor, plus or minus. Labor will generally be about $95 per hour

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, sounds like you may come out ok if that's the case

Still, though, unless you know what you’re doing it is one of those things that should always be done by a pro simply to save yourself the heartache of dealing with it

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 19, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

That was why I did mine before

But even with the added benefit of having some passable knowledge of what I was doing, being able to call my dad with questions, having a ton of tools at my disposal, and having a hydraulic lift to get the car off the ground it was still a major pain in the ass

My favorite part is this:
Daniel Cabrera, Nationals: The 27-year-old’s stuff has gone from great to very good but the walks are still a killer. Of all these guys, I’d be most surprised if he figured it out. Cabrera, though, does finally have a tailwind moving to the more pitcher-friendly NL.

I made it six metres!

by Kirsten Schlewitz on Mar 20, 2009 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions

51.6 meters

I found a method where you balance on your right knee with your right calf behind you and your left leg straight forward. Then you basically just move your right leg forward and backwards and create mini falls… going about .1 mph.

In case you were wondering, there is some wierd obstruction at 50 meters. I thought it was a finish line, but it was more like a hurdle. I wiped out trying to step over it.

I like making him move forward at a good pace because of the song it starts to play

Another fun thing to do is see how far backwards you can get

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 20, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

26.9 meters

I just made him crawl on his right knee and stuck his left leg all the way out so it was really hard for him to fall over, then moved him at like .1 meters per second.

by OlSalty on Mar 20, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Woo, beat it

I just went straight through the hurdle and it didn’t penalize me. At the end it wants you to jump (yeah right) and adds however far you jump to the end of the run, so 100.1m for me.

We can only hope that Harvey Weinstein changes his mind about going ahead with a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s early masterpiece, The Seven Samurai. Maybe someone can suggest that Weinstein just update it as a western. Oh, wait. Never mind.

9. Oh, yeah, speaking of Rachael Ray:

She was tanked.

I don’t mean to go on about it – frankly it’s of some reassurance that the reigning queen of suburban cuisine needs to get her drink on, since frequently I have to in order to watch her shows or hear her utterances of “EVOO” – but it was a rather unabashed, probably unconscious display of hoarse enthusiasm (“NEW YORK DOLLS! POSSIVLY THE GREATETH BAND – EV – ahhh…. AH!”)

Should happen soon, it's rather annoying

we ended up playing old maps yesterday because we got so bored of the new ones.

I wish we sucked less at HQ though… with Eegah and crushedoptimist, we’re damn near unstoppable in TD. We just ran into a lot of elite 6-man teams yesterday (plus I played awful)

by seattlebruin on Mar 23, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

We should try hardcore mode in HQ

Less people playing it like it’s TD. We all communicate well enough to make it better, and as long as we (COACH!) don’t goof up and knife each other then we could perform quite well

I want to poop at your house - Thingray

by tootthekazoo on Mar 23, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the Eegah, crushedoptimist and I would do poorly in HC since we all like to run around a bit too much

and are probably most effective that way. I think we’ll do fine in HQ once the new maps get re-integrated and we’re not facing super teams all the time. I’m just not used enough to the game format to be good at it yet.

by Thingray on Mar 23, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

My big problem with it, as mentioned before

Is that too many people try and play it like it is deathmatch, which spoils the point of the game. They play that mode because they can run around and kill guys and know exactly where they are going to be and rack up a ton of XP in the process. I love the gametype in theory but it doesn’t play as well for me. Seeing the tanks on Outskirts kind of sealed that for me. I think you guys would do fine in Hardcore because although you run around a bunch, you are also quick and accurate with your first shot. We should at least try it and see how it goes

I gave it Wolves in the Throne Room as a criteria and although I'm only three or four songs in I'm liking it so far.

The first song was not my cup of tea; it had the bears-fighting-over-the-last-camper vocals and I’m generally not a fan, so I thumbs-downed it. Next song it picked was by Anaal Nathrak and it was pretty slammin’. Also Darkthrone and Kampfar. I’m thinking of trying High on Fire next to see where it goes with that.

Excellent

I need to get with some kind of online radio for here at work. Now that I have more control over the office I can listen to some real music, instead of KMPS country >:(

Slayer? Really?

I like Slayer as much as the next guy but they’re nothing even close to being like High on Fire.
