Don't post a new OTFPOTD until the last one hits ~750 posts or is buried 10 fanposts down.
It's okay to comment in an older off-topic fanpost, we all can see when there are new comments.
That out of the way, here are some neat links for those of you who aren't feeling the madness of the month.

Guess everyone is preoccupied with the multiple sports games today. NCAA, MLS, ST….
"Fights begin, finger prints are took, days is lost, bail is made, court dates are ignored, cycle is repeated."
I'll be perfectly honest
I still haven’t found it inside me to get excited over the MLS.
Same.
Plus I hate college basketball.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome that we've got a new professional sports franchise
I’ve just never really liked soccer. I’m hoping that having a team can change that.
I'm "excited" because it's always fun to have a new sports team in town,
but I won’t be truly excited until I get to attend a game and find out if it really turns my crank or not.

Question for the more automotive smart people here.
The clutch in my Celica has started to slip so I need to replace it. Having never done this before, how much pain and suffering should I expect to go through to replace the clutch in a front wheel drive car?
but it's one less wheel to maintain!
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Yes, the Clubman
Not a bad looking rig, though I’ve heard it’s a bit sluggish and doesn’t drive like it’s on rails because of the added weight and size, which kinda nukes most of the purpose of driving a Mini

I wouldn't be surpised if it's not all that great of a car but it's gorgeous to look at.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 19, 2009 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, it's definitely a sweet looking rig
But the whole purpose of the Mini is to be small, incredibly agile, and quick as hell (especially in an “S” model). Going larger and using the same powerplants just seems to go against the purpose, if you ask me

I prefer the classic 2-door Mini
but the 4-door does look good.
I also prefer the coupe.
I guess I’m the only one who’s not too big a fan of the way the Clubman’s appearance. It’s pretty on its own, but it looks awkward compared to coupe.
I just have a thing for two-door coupes and hatchbacks.
Part of the reason I fell in love with my Celica.
Me, too!

You aren't alone on that at all
As I’ve said, it isn’t bad looking, but by slapping the “Mini” badge on it the point is immediately lost

Then pay someone to replace the clutch for you.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Probably wise.
I might run it over to my mechanic later today. Might as well have him take a look at the exhaust and power steering issues I’ve been having as well.
Doing it yourself?
Plenty of pain and suffering, my friend. That is not a terribly easy thing to do if you aren’t mechanically proficient. I did it on my ’86 Prelude way back and it took me about 8 hours, and I ended up having to borrow a tool called a “pickle fork.” At that point I was ready to give up

The only pickle fork I want is the one that fishes pickles out of the jar at the bar
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Exactly
I thought my dad was fucking with me when he told me the name of the tool. It’s for removing ball joints, if I remember correctly (this was 7 years ago or so). And I had to do that because I basically had to remove the entire lower portion of the left suspension to get to the clutch.

And another question
what’s a good ballpark estimate of what I’ll end up paying to have this done?
Well, the part should only be about $150 at the max
And you’re probably looking at 6 hours of labor, plus or minus. Labor will generally be about $95 per hour

Normally I like doing repairs myself just so I can have a learning experience
but this sounds like it’s over my head.
That was why I did mine before
But even with the added benefit of having some passable knowledge of what I was doing, being able to call my dad with questions, having a ton of tools at my disposal, and having a hydraulic lift to get the car off the ground it was still a major pain in the ass

It’s about Bouton and a friend trying to save a historic minor league ballpark. I was hesitant for a long time to read the book because the subject matter wasn’t terribly fascinating to me. However, now that I’ve read it I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I saw Bouton speak down on the waterfront when the ASG was in Seattle.
It was pretty cool, but there was only about twelve people listening, and half of them were confused tourists. I got to ask him a few questions (not like I was blocking anyone) and almost asked him if he wanted to go get a beer afterwards, but decided that might be a little weird.
Stuff like that is always a tough call.

Anybody here ever tried to play QWOP?
It’s a game where you try to use the keyboard to make a guy run. Q and W make his thighs move while O and P make his calves move. Game has some silly physics that lead to the runner falling in some ridiculous positions. Click here to give it a try
I want to poop at your house - Thingray
Yeah, I don't know how anybody can make him go
I hesitated on linking this because I thought I’d done it before at some point. I think my overall best on it is something close to 6 meters, and the guy basically limbo walked the last 3

I made it six metres!

by Kirsten Schlewitz on Mar 20, 2009 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions
51.6 meters
I found a method where you balance on your right knee with your right calf behind you and your left leg straight forward. Then you basically just move your right leg forward and backwards and create mini falls… going about .1 mph.
In case you were wondering, there is some wierd obstruction at 50 meters. I thought it was a finish line, but it was more like a hurdle. I wiped out trying to step over it.
I just hit 8 with this same method
Seems the best way to do it.

Another fun thing to do is see how far backwards you can get
I want to poop at your house - Thingray
by tootthekazoo on Mar 20, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions
26.9 meters
I just made him crawl on his right knee and stuck his left leg all the way out so it was really hard for him to fall over, then moved him at like .1 meters per second.
Woo, beat it
I just went straight through the hurdle and it didn’t penalize me. At the end it wants you to jump (yeah right) and adds however far you jump to the end of the run, so 100.1m for me.
I got him to land on his head and (presumably) break his neck.
So that was neat.

we ended up playing old maps yesterday because we got so bored of the new ones.

We should try hardcore mode in HQ
Less people playing it like it’s TD. We all communicate well enough to make it better, and as long as we (COACH!) don’t goof up and knife each other then we could perform quite well

I think the Eegah, crushedoptimist and I would do poorly in HC since we all like to run around a bit too much

"Fights begin, finger prints are took, days is lost, bail is made, court dates are ignored, cycle is repeated."
My big problem with it, as mentioned before
Is that too many people try and play it like it is deathmatch, which spoils the point of the game. They play that mode because they can run around and kill guys and know exactly where they are going to be and rack up a ton of XP in the process. I love the gametype in theory but it doesn’t play as well for me. Seeing the tanks on Outskirts kind of sealed that for me. I think you guys would do fine in Hardcore because although you run around a bunch, you are also quick and accurate with your first shot. We should at least try it and see how it goes

I'm always up to try it
I just don’t think we’ll be successful.
At the very least at least we know we have a ~unstoppable TD team, eh?

This is true, and unstoppable is good enough for me

I hate you unstoppable bastards.
"Fights begin, finger prints are took, days is lost, bail is made, court dates are ignored, cycle is repeated."
I ran into a guy this weekend that I swear was indestructable.
A dropped an entire clip from an MP40 into him at close range and he walked away while I was reloading.

Lag, probably.
We got hosed by lag in a game last night. Several of us did exactly what you had said and got killed after we went empty even though it appeared that the other guy never pulled the trigger

And I had three artilleries, a dog call, and went 26-5-8 while bragging about being the lag killer the whole time

I'm nearly convinced that you were the host during that game

I actually wasn't the host
I was lagging like mad, I’m just better at spray and pray than the rest of you.
Or at least I was better than my opponents.
The time it lagged and I was hosting, I went 24-2 on Cliffside, it was wonderful

Your final point does not help the case of your first point
You lose at arguing

The time I lagged and I was hosting, I experienced no lag and thus was able to utterly own everyone
this time when I was not hosting, I experienced lag as well, I’m just amazing at killing through it.
Plus once I got dogs, it was all over.
by seattlebruin on Mar 23, 2009 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, the dogs probably don't have much issue with lag
I’m still surprised that game didn’t time out on us. I still can’t believe that one game had a host end it and we lost by 9 points while I was 15-1. Dammit

I didn't die either,
the guy just ran off through a door when I was reloading.

I haven't used it personally, but the new Stealths have gotten rave reviews from a few guys on my team that have been using them.

What's a harder hour at work
the last one or the first
First one on a Monday, and the last one if it's a Friday/last day of work week

Agreed mostly.
The first one on any day but Friday.

I acutally always find that the last hour of a shift flies by because I always have stuff to do.
The first hour is the same. Really, it’s all the hours in the middle that I hate.

Well, it's really any period of time leading up to a break
where the 15 minutes before seem to drag on.

This is good to know.
Care to elaborate on what it’s picked for you?

I gave it Wolves in the Throne Room as a criteria and although I'm only three or four songs in I'm liking it so far.
The first song was not my cup of tea; it had the bears-fighting-over-the-last-camper vocals and I’m generally not a fan, so I thumbs-downed it. Next song it picked was by Anaal Nathrak and it was pretty slammin’. Also Darkthrone and Kampfar. I’m thinking of trying High on Fire next to see where it goes with that.

Excellent
I need to get with some kind of online radio for here at work. Now that I have more control over the office I can listen to some real music, instead of KMPS country >:(

Slayer? Really?
I like Slayer as much as the next guy but they’re nothing even close to being like High on Fire.

At first I was confused about who you were supposed to be replying to
Now I realize that you are talking to Pandora, but doing it here.

I tried speaking into the microphone but then I realized it was a headphone jack and Pandora couldn't hear me.

That's not how you do it
You’re supposed to do sign language into your CD/DVD Drive
