Seattle Sounders vs. New York - Open Game Thread

This isn't a Sounders site. This is a Mariners site. This will be the only time I put up a game thread on Lookout Landing. But dammit, if the first game in Seattle Sounders FC franchise history doesn't deserve one, I'm not sure what does.

I know a lot of you aren't soccer fans, and many of those of you who are aren't particularly into MLS. But today is a special day in Seattle. Today is going to be full of all the pagentry and emotion and completely irrational devotion that combine to make professional sports great. Today thousands of fans are going to march through the city to Qwest Field hours before kickoff, all wearing what can only be described as a garish shade of green. Today 32,000 people are going to jam themselves into a stadium and sing and cheer their asses off, supporting a team in a sport that people thought would never succeed in America.

It's going to be special. And regardless of your views on soccer and/or MLS, it's an event you won't regret being a part of. So take some time out of your day to flip on ESPN2 at 6:00 to watch the game, or head downtown in the afternoon to take part in the festivities. Hell, maybe you'll even like what you see on the pitch.

And let's be honest. By 6 on Thursday your brackets are going to be fucked already. You might as well let your brand-new Sounders cheer you up.

Likely Sounders starting lineup:

Fredy Montero (forward), Nate Jaqua (forward), Brad Evans (attacking mid), Sebastien Le Toux (wing), Sanna Nyassi (wing), Osvaldo Alonso (defensive mid), Nate Sturgis (outside back), Tyrone Marshall (center back), Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (center back), James Riley (outside back), Kasey Keller (goalkeeper)

Go Sounders!

Been looking forward to this for some time. Have a wicked day if you’re headed along.

Been watching some of the highlight reels of training games and Montero looks to be goooood. Been hard to tell how that’d stack up against MLS quality opposition though, so tonight will be fascinating.

I must make a request here

if you do not like soccer, or do not like the fact that soccer is being played in Seattle, please – just close this thread. Don’t post about how much you hate soccer, how boring you think it is, or what a waste of your time it is.

I’m envious of everyone that gets to go.

Whilst we're in a football thread...

pdb – I went to the Arsenal vs Cardiff game a few weeks ago.

They might not be getting the results, but in the flesh they play some bloody nice football at the mo.

by MarkE on Mar 19, 2009 7:55 AM PDT up reply actions

They always do play nice football

A lot of times when I watch them I have to stop watching when they get into the penalty area because I know it’ll just end up in a missed shot, but when they’re on they’re a joy to watch. Especially in the Emirates – I’ve toured it but I’ve never seen a match there.

It's interesting

I don’t know of any other 2-tiered football stadium that allows you to wander freely around the communal parts without restriction, a la Safeco, in the same way.

The only part we couldn’t access during the game was the segregated Cardiff section. Was most impressed.

by MarkE on Mar 19, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

The tour was awesome

We got to sit in the director’s box (I sat in Hill-Wood’s seat) and check out the “director’s lounge” where they host and entertain the opposing team’s dignitaries. I felt very, very, very poor. We also got to see the changing room, go out pitchside into the Arsenal bench, and in a BIZARRE COINCIDENCE the tour ended at the club shop. It was well worth the £15.

A great offense and a ??? defense.

Nick, what does that get you in this league?
To me, I think it makes them right around average to perhaps a bit above. I’m not convinced an MLS team has enough consistent weapons to really penalize a team that can’t defend. But I don’t know.

It’ll be a damn fun team to watch, that much is certain.

by marc w on Mar 19, 2009 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Really hard to say, I haven't even seen them play live yet

Of course, nobody has. I think the Sounders start slow-ish, heat up midseason to get into playoff contention, and fade down the road-game-heavy stretch. So they’ll be ok. But they’ll be damn exciting to watch, both for offensive awesomeness and defensive hilarity.

by Nick S on Mar 19, 2009 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

For those of you who don't know

Nick also runs a very good Sounders blog. It’s a good place to familiarize yourself with the team and the upcoming season if you haven’t already (or you just like the Sounders).

I'm not a soccer fan, but I'm trying to become one...

And if Dave Clark has his way, I’ll be one as well. I’ve really been trying to pay attention, but I only have so many hours to play with. Still, it’s an exciting day for Seattle, and certainly a historic moment* for MLS soccer fans.

*Yes, I know it’s TECHNICALLY “an historic”, but the whole purpose of the “n” in the “a/an” thing is to provide a comfortable consonant flow for words that start with vowel sounds — while we’re taught “h” is the exception to the “a-consonant, an-vowel” rule, it’s really only meant for those words where the “h” in front of a vowel is silent (i.e. “honor, herbal” etc…). So, dammit, even though I’m a college-educated linguist, it’s the one rule I break on purpose. If “Historic” were pronounced ist-OR-ik then, yeah, I’d be fine with that. And for those people who may pronounce it that way, fine, pronounce it with an “an” then. But why the heck am I ranting about this when I should be discussing soccer?

No clue…

I feel like I should be wearing a green scarf or something…

Also a pretty new fan to soccer, other than watching parts of the World Cup every four years. I have no idea where I’m sitting, as my ticket reads Section “GA3”, Row “GA1”, seat 13. I’m confused. It’s not actually general admission… is it?

Also, is Montera the guy we drafted first overall?

According to the seat map on seattlesounders.com

there’s no GA sections, so I’m not sure where your seats are. maybe they have standing room for overflow crowds?

Question: what kind of standard is MLS compared to England, approx? League 1? Championship?

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

by EnglishMariner on Mar 19, 2009 4:02 PM PDT reply actions

Whatever the one below the Championship is called now, probably

Is that League 1? MLS is better than it was when it started, but it’s still not nearly up to the standard of the best leagues in the world – the fact that the Germans want nothing more to do with Landon Donovan because he was useless for them tells of the gulf in class that MLS still has to overcome.

Lots of youth and team speed, so whatever mistakes get made on the attack, they can get back and stay in front of the game. They’ll probably get exploited by quality strikers on the road, but right now they’re at home and NYRB doesn’t have quality strikers.

by ningwers on Mar 19, 2009 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

Graham's commentary:

1. Qwest+confetti = horrible surface for control.
2. Sounders looked great on the counter, but careless in the real build-up attacks.
3. Awful, awful defending – Keller had to give them an earful for making a complete hash of things in the box a few times.
4. New York were terrible in all aspects for about 80% of the game, and merely mediocre for the rest of it.
5. I loved it when Angel fouled a guy with a petulant little kick and was absolutely destroyed by a late challenge 5 seconds later.
6. Crowd was amazing. Well done city. And was even cheering at the right time, too.
7. Montero is a great talent, second goal was an absolutely superb dummy then finish. Good effort, but he’s got to stop being overly tricky in the first stage of attack and giving the ball away.
8. Keller had basically nothing to do.
9. The opposing #10 is really goddamn huge.
10. Our wingers are very, very quick, enough to be a huge problem for opposing defences.
11. Although the defending itself was sloppy, there was great effort there. I saw a couple of bad giveaways in NY’s half followed immediately by the offending player sprinting back and reclaiming the ball, it’s nice to see.
12. Why are our full backs so damn short?

by Graham MacAree on Mar 19, 2009 8:55 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

This is what I was looking for

It’s good they have Keller back there, he’s always been a really vocal keeper and if the defence is always going to be that dire they’ll need someone like him.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 19, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I pretty much agree with all of that

It doesn’t speak well of NY’s game that the defense didn’t play all that well (some of the giveaways on the defensive end seemed pretty inexcusable) and at the same time, Keller had hardly anything to do for most of the game. To go with your 12th point, I have to imagine that some teams with big front lines will give the Sounders problems.

Anyway, that was a lot of fun, and hopefully the Sounders can build on it.

by ubelmann on Mar 19, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Great job of the midfield in taking pressure off the defense, too

the defending itself was fairly awful, but everyone knew it would be going in. I will say though that even the defenders controlled the air quite well, esp. considering that the opposing #10 is really goddamn huge.

Montero is surprisingly good at holding off defenders.

by marc w on Mar 20, 2009 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

So that was pretty incredible.

I have no idea how it sounded from other parts of the stadium, but the EC sections were seriously boisterous. If this kind of environment can maintain throughout the season, it might reach a tipping point into getting the rest of the stadium to join in and create a full on Seahawks mode.

What an awesome night.

I am a member of Gorilla FC, a local fan group that promotes, “No sexism, racism, or hatred toward alternative lifestyles, just party.” Got my shirt tonight, along with my button, which ensures that all season long I get happy hour drinks from the Elysian bars (not necessarily my fav, but oh well) as well as Fado, amongst others, no matter the hour.

The scene was unreal. We sat in the Gorilla section – Section 124, where we had our group leader Kevin in his Gorilla outfit, Mohawk Guy (who was awesome), and a hindu dude who was the funniest guy I’ve met in a while. He wore a turbin and a long beard painted green, but talked like a surfer. He kept saying, “Dude, this is fucking AWESOME!”

The first goal. Holy heck. History was made. We sat under an area where the streamers were blown (Silas loved that).

I am surprised at the level of talent on this team. I predict good things. I’ll be interested to see how they fare both at home and away with the likes of the Galaxy.

I was not a soccer fan before tonight. When it was announced that the Sounders would become MLS, I promised myself I would follow it. After tonight I’m hooked. Kudos to the team, the owners, and staff. I had a BLAST.

I understand why the ownership might be scrooge-like

in wanting to open the upper deck, being conservative in developing public awareness for the first couple of years to the extent of “wow, those Sounders are always selling out”.

But maaaaan the Hawk’s Nest looks tempting, at just an extra thousand or so seats, too. Stamping on the metal bleachers is gonna crank up the noise another level in the stadium.

this is an interesting video

A Sounders FC guy goes over some of the specifics about converting Qwest from a football stadium into a football stadium. When it comes to seating, the lower bowl is 25,000 people, but they mention an increment of 32,000 before the full 67,000 person capacity. Interesting, I wonder what else opens up for that….

It got them a lot of PR, but a lot of it won't be good.

It clearly hurt the club, it hurt Beckham’s appeal in the US, and it made the MLS look foolish for marketing the league around someone who played sporadically and then jumped at the first chance he got to leave.
Galaxy seem to be the New York Knicks of MLS.

I really don't understand how the Seahawks, Huskies, formerly Sonics and now Sounders crowds can be so crazy and loud

and Mariners fans can be so tremendously boring. Especially considering the reputation the Kingdome crowds had.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 20, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Part of it is the gentrification of the fanbase.

Prices doubled when the team moved into Safeco. My section was rowdy in the Kingdome, but overnight it seemed like the right field stands became a wine and cheese golf clapping crew.

Many of the oldsters from the Kingdome days were priced out and have never come back. It is the saddest part about leaving the Kingdome for me because we had a really tight group from 1992-1999.

I took the Doyle’s bus up from Tacoma, which included all the beer you could drink, songs from some of the south sound ECS, etc. Amazing experience from 4pm through 10pm. Wow.

We had a blast.

The best part was the cranky teenager behind me who whined all night about how no one was sitting down and enjoying the match.

Unbelievable atmosphere.

My season ticket is in the north end zone; row A, sec 147. The view across the pitch to the ECS section was great — those guys were on their feet screaming and chanting almost the entire match. I really hope the energy is sustainable for the entire season because you don’t have to be a lifelong soccer fan to enjoy an experience like that. If they (we) can keep it up and the Sounders can stay competitive, there will be a lot of new fans this year.

Here are some pics I took last night:

My voice is gone thanks to being in the crazy section.

There were three older guys sitting behind us that kept yelling “Sit down! Everybody sit down!” Sure thing. And we’ll ask those guys down there to stop playing soccer, too.

Thanks!

I only wish it was framed a little better. But I was standing and yelling while I took the picture so I’m probably lucky it was that good.

I actually can't wait for these games....

This is the best possible outcome – the NW A-league rivals are all brought up to MLS together, AND Seattle goes first.

I like the idea of opening up the Hawks nest,

especially if they made it another rowdy cheering section to provide a ton of noise on the metal bleachers and make a nice back and forth with the ECS.

Seriously

Didn’t see it last night for obvious reasons, but having watched back some of the clips, it’s gotta be said that Montero looks special. I mean, he looked good in those preseason vids but they’re not always a good indicator.

Montero’s pass for the 2nd goal was out of this world. That was sheer class, and the finish for the 3rd wasn’t far behind either. Of course when you’re two up and full of confidence those things are more likely to come, but that composure in front of goal is a difficult trait.

This has got me hyped to catch as many games on the web as poss, and also convinced me to change my travel plans and visit for one of the Mariners/Sounders double-header Saturdays this summer.

Totally slipped my mind until now

but walking home after the game, somewhere around 1st and Yesler there was a huge police presence and I noticed that a car was flipped over near the corner of the intersection. No idea what happened, but found it incredibly curious. Anyone else see this or know anything about it?

Excellent news for the Sounders.

It appears that Jeff Parke is finally about to sign. I bet he was impressed by the showing last night.

Of course, he still has to serve a 7 game suspension. But when he comes back, one of Marshall and Hurtado could be benched. Depth is also nice.

Are any highlights available of this game?

Well done Seattle, and OMG Keller is in goal?!

I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

Thanks.

Atmosphere looked cracking, and that Montero took his second very nicely.

SOUNDERS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounders win! And awesome to hear Kevin calling that game. Unfortunately other responsibilities are keeping me from post game celebration at Fado with my brethren Gorilla FC.

Just got back from the game

Sounders looked real disjointed on offense other than their scoring attack in the first half. Defense was shaky as well, but hey, Keller played out of his mind again.

Fredy Montero’s really selfish, but that shot from 25 yards was ridiculous.

I’ll take the three points and bring on Toronto!
