2009 Mariners Commercials
The new Mariners commercials are up. On first viewing, this seems like an off year. There's no real standout one. Maybe the Felix one? I guess that's pretty good. And it's always fun to watch Ichiro hit. But I'm kinda disappointed about the RRS one. Such a lame/easy joke. And I'm sad there's no Beltre commercial this year.
Or maybe I'm totally wrong. Are my expectations just too high?

And I just saw the thread about them airing on FSN last night.
I still think this thread would be good for everyone who hasn’t seen them to discuss here, but if not, a mod should just delete this.

I agree, there's no real standout.
I chuckled a bit at all of them, but I didn’t vote because I couldn’t pick any one over the other. They were all ‘meh’.
I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.

I liked the Felix one.
Other than that, I thought they were mediocre.

I like the Felix one too!

I thought the Secret was great
Ichiro hitting and 24/7 were not funny in my opinion.
Felix pitching was good, and I found the RRS one amusing even though the joke was bad.

The Secret was awful. I laughed out loud at the terribleness.
Edgar’s never going to top “I took my geoduck to Puyallup.”
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

Enjoyed most of them
Except that the RRS one is properly weak. There’s a whle host of better pun opportunity than that. Or at least, if you’re going to run with it, don’t explain the joke you’re making.
They’re certainly not bad, overall. Just nothing that’s… well… it’s not Fungo.
by MarkE on Mar 18, 2009 10:12 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not bad, not particularly memorable.
At least none of them irritate me, which is pretty important considering how often we’re going to be seeing them.
No Erik, No Beltre. Not a coincidence I think. Wish that had done something with Niehaus.

It's always fun to try to decipher the politics behind them.
No Yuni this year either.

They're alright.
I like the Ichiro commercial the most because the joke came out of nowhere and caused me to laugh quite a bit.
24/7 was the weakest.

Felix made me chuckle
I like watching Ichiro hit, but overall that one was kinda so so. Enjoyed hearing RRS talk but the only way that joke could’ve been worse is if it had been about New Zealand.
The Edgar and Buhner ad was pretty spot on.

Pretty boring.
They all gave me a small chuckle, but thats all. I actually wish they had a Griffey commercial or maybe throw him in with Bone and Edgar.

Like the Felix one and the Buhner/Edgar one.
The RRS one sucked. And the Ichiro one was disappointing. The rest, meh.

Yeah, I was blown away.
I imagine they were done before Griffey was around to film them, though. Maybe there will be one later.

I can't imagine they won't have a Griffey commercial eventually
Like Teej was saying, maybe he wasn’t part of the team yet by the time they were done with these.
by OlSalty on Mar 18, 2009 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly I've still only half assimilated the Griffey is on the team
It’s like forgetting that the Angels play in LA, or the Mariners no longer play in the Kingdome, it’s really strange.

It looks like they just wanted to stop at 5 ads because of the "100th ad" thing.
They did the obligatory Ichiro ad, Wakamatsu ad, and Felix ad, then the 100th one, and they just had one more left to get really creative on and they settled on RRS.
I’m a little surprised they didn’t do more, nor did they try to do an ensemble ad a-la “Fungo” last year.

The list also includes:
White people rapping about everyday white-guy things
Midgets
Fat comedians making fat jokes
Getting kicked in the nuts
This list is not exhaustive, just a few examples.

Felix one was excellent
I felt the others were pretty bad. Mariner commercials have been awful for a while now though, so whatever. I’m glad Felix has another good one. And they could have done so much more with RRS. His accent is awesome and saves that commercial from being a disaster.

I like the Felix one the best. The only way it could have been better would have been to substitute a rangers hitter with that rockies hitter.

I thought they were fine
I enjoyed Ichiro and Felix, the RRS spot was fine because it featured RRS, the Wakamatsu one reminded me of a late-90’s Yankees ad that featured Tino Martinez on a couch, and while I didn’t like the Buhner/Edgar ad, I was happy that they didn’t reveal the Moose to have been writing the commercials. That would have upset me.
