Pudge----> Houston

Link

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — The Houston Astros and catcher Ivan Rodriguez are closing in on a $1.5 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press. The deal would contain $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on games and plate appearances, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced by the team.

This is a great move for Pudge. If I were an aging right handed hitter and wanted to keep my career afloat, the first place I would want to play is Enron. The downside is that the Astros are not good.

Great signing for Houston.

Wait

Don’t they have Towles and Ausmus as well?

Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

Yes he does

Gotcha

Towles looked pretty bad last year

this gives him another year to develop.

You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.

Good situation for Pudge

He’ll actually get some playing time and the Astros’ catchers have sucked so far this spring. Plus, now we don’t have to listen to the “he should sign with the Rangers” all the time, without regard to the fact that the Rangers have a couple of young catchers who need more playing time, not less.

His CHONE projection is -22/150 RAR.

I have no idea how to park adjust that, but I still think he’d be lucky to be much more than a one win player even in Houston.

Yep

J.R. Towles will likely be better than that, with the upside to be a lot better. For a team like the Astros, who have almost no young talent and have no chance of winning next year, I don’t know why they would play a veteran over a young guy with some upside.

Even his horrible 2008 was worth 1.9 runs.

Factor in his improved health and move to the weaker league/friendlier ballpark and I wouldn’t be surprised for Pudge to beat last year.

If $3 million this is a steal and he can be a good mentor to Towles, as long as he stays away from his ass.

As a guy

who loved watching Pudge play baseball as I grew up, I’m glad to see he’s found a job. He’s really one of the only guys I remember from when I was reallly little that are still playing. Here’s to a good season for Pudge.
