Jansen
reminds me of Ben Davis. Big, switch hitting catcher.
Cabrera
definitely could have caught that throw from Izturis.
How do you teach "timely hitting"?
And isn’t anytime a good time to get a hit?
Haha
I was thinking the same thing. I used to really love Harold Reynolds when I was in highschool, I really dislike him now.
Those swings were so half-assed too
Not even remotely close to the ball
I really hate these games are only on MLB Network and MLB.tv
Good thing I found a stream online. Too bad the audio sucks, one speaker is english, the other is Japanesee I believe. Weird.
Let's get those green gloves going.

Theres a solid amount of M's out for Venezuela.
Chavez, Lopez, Silva….Guillen. Oh wait, we traded him for who again? Bocachicha?

They'll probably burn him in relief again.
Instead of getting to see him against the US.

I forgot how nice it was

If only the Netherlands could replace the Angels in the AL West.
Then he might be able to win enough to justify that contract.

Granted they can’t hit the ball as far, they’ve still out hit Venezuela today.

Anaheim must be their AAA club.
\ Arte Moreno
He didn't go.
Why did the Mariners let a bunch of other players go to the WBC, but not Beltre?
Will this hurt in contract talks?
He didn't go.
Beltre is coming back from surgery.
They’re moving him along cautiously. Won’t ultimately mean anything in the contract talks.
Didn't he have some tightness in his back or shoulder just before the WBC? Seems like the paper said he had a bit of trouble with that, or his wrist.
Can’t really remember what the deal was now.
I think Beltre experience some tightness recently (after he was supposed to go).
Before the WBC, Beltre said he was feeling great. During the first game he said he swung as hard as he could (uh-oh) and felt fine. Zduriencik didn’t completely believe Beltre was well enough to go and block it at the last minute.
Beltre was coming off of surgery
They didn’t want him rushing back into competitive baseball and reinjuring it.
Got it.
Thanks guys. Forgot about the surgery. I bet hes lonely at camp.

So the rule is basically draw an imaginary line from 1st through 3rd base right? The right foot crosses over, the pitcher has to go to the mound?
WTF is Louis Sojo doing, I’d be out there getting a piece of ass.
I love Randall Simon's approach at the plate.
Swing really really hard and hope he hits the ball.
He didn't go.
Bahahahaha
Yurendell de Caster just got a hit off of K-Rod
Man, the Netherlands did it again.
Held Venezuela to three hits, three runs. That’s better than the USA did in either of our games.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Hasn't Rollins played some second base in the minors?
I think I’d put him at second over DeRosa. Or better yet, Jeter.
US hasnt had much to cheer for, but early returns sound like PR has more support on US soil than the US does..
pretty pathetic. I know their is a large latin population in Miami, but still, you would like to see some better US support
Feel free to purchase a ticket.
Americans aren’t going nuts for the event, but other countries’ fans are. I don’t think the event is going away.
It might be a good idea to drop this line of conversation Reynolds.

He left his feet, therefore it’s not an error.
In other words, if you dive for every ball, you can theoretically have a 1.000 FP.
The U.S. team is so depressing.
If only all the studs would have committed. I would change everyone on this team but the 3B and C. And now SS since Rollins is in.

Granderson and Youkilis are pretty solid. Tough to argue with Braun, too.

Yeah Braun is a good corner OF.
But I’d take Tex over Youk any day. And Crawford over Granderson. But then again we play Dunn over Granderson so it doesn’t really matter.

We can assume
Felix is getting the nod today right? I haven’t seen him yet and my skin is crawling with anticipation.
Love the flat black batting helmets
for Japan.
There's no way this guy actually throws 102, right?
if so, he needs to get on a raft pronto
He didn't seem to ever come close to touching 100 today
Maybe he can, I’m kinda skeptical after watching today’s game.
According to Gameday's pitchf/x...
His 3rd pitch to Aoki in the first inning was 100. His 4th pitch to Ogasawara in the 2nd was at 99. His fastball velocity was all over the place, though, and was just as likely to be in the low 90s as the high 90s.
He's erratic, but he throws really, really hard.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he touched 100 a few times a game.

by Aaron Campeau on Mar 15, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions
It's not like
you don’t see that in the MLB all the time, but yeah. Japan never seems to miss a chance to bunt.
What I'll say about Japan (and especially Ichiro!)
is that he’s fast enough and a good enough bunter to try and bunt for a hit when sacrificing
by seattlebruin on Mar 15, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
1B side isn't any better if the 1B is left-handed
I’m not sure which hand that Cuba’s first baseman throws with, though. It allows the third baseman to get back to the bag right away, whereas bunting towards that side forces the third baseman to make a decision.
Ichiro’s main mistake was not getting it past the pitcher and forcing the third baseman to field the ball.

And Chapman has to control his emotions better
he’s getting too emotional because he’s too young
by seattlebruin on Mar 15, 2009 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Chapman is 21 years old
Plenty of time for him to figure out his control issues, though I’d agree that he’s more hype than actual talent.
I guess I don't think that all that many pitchers actually tame their control issues...
…when they are that serious at that age. It happens sometimes, and those cases seem to be cited more because they are the exception than because they are the rule. More commonly, guys like Chapman seem to wind up getting passed around because it’s worth a shot to try to improve their control, but it doesn’t work very often and guys who can throw hard with no control are a dime a dozen.
He's trying to be less selfish
He noticed that the ball was foul and he wanted to give his teammates a chance to make the out

I get the feeling that Japan's been a little lucky on balls-in-play so far...

Benjamin Graham -
I know that every country (except Cuba, maybe) has some guys they would like to have at the WBC...
…who aren’t there (Jair Jurrjens would have been nice for NL, for instance), so I don’t mean this to be whiny, but the US pitching staff disappoints me. Looking at 2008 FIP for pitchers with 180+ IP as a rough guide, presumably American pitchers:
Tim Lincecum – 2.62 FIP
Cliff Lee
C.C. Sabathia
Dan Haren
Roy Halladay
Derek Lowe
Brandon Webb
Mike Mussina
Chad Billingsley
Ryan Dempster
John Danks
A.J. Burnett
Zack Greinke
Jon Lester
Andy Pettitte
Aaron Cook
Randy Johnson
Ricky Nolasco
Roy Oswalt — 3.80 FIP
Now, granted, Oswalt’s not exactly chopped liver, and I would expect Oswalt and Peavy to outperform some of the guys on that list this season. It’s just disappointing for me to look at that list (which doesn’t even include relievers) and then see guys like Hawkins, Guthrie, and Thornton on the US roster.
With the pitch count rules it would be nice to be able to throw 2 "starters" a game.
Then use some relief aces to get through the late innings.
A roto of: Sabathia, Halladay, Webb, Lester, Lincecum, Peavy would be great.
Then fill the rest with bullpen guys.
\ my 2 cents
He didn't go.
That wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea
I was mainly just trying to emphasize that there are a lot of options for just starters before you get to some of the guys who are on the team. As far as I can tell, the team seems to have as starters: Peavy, Oswalt, Lilly, and … Guthrie maybe?
Also, adding more starters gives you the ability to give a starter the quick hook.
Last night, Peavy couldn’t be pulled to early cause the bullpen is filled with 1 inning guys. Which is just dumb.
He didn't go.
It shouldn't be assumed that any or all of these guys weren't asked to play though
They may have been asked and decided not to play.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
I'm not saying that the people in charge didn't think of these guys
I just wish that more of them decided to play (or weren’t unable to play.) Assuming that you really only need 4, maybe 5 starters for the team, it seems realistic to expect that we could have gotten a couple of guys from the top half of that list.
He said Jeter wasn't selfish.
Because he took a walk with a runner on third instead of swinging for the RBI because RBIs make you money. “That’s not winning baseball.”
Derek Jeter has not been the face of baseball for the last 8 years.
Stop felating him.
The face of New York, yes.
A face of baseball, yes. There’s no doubt that he’s an International icon. But THE face of baseball? Where?
He's one of the best players on the most famous team in the world.
When the Yankees were winning pennants like crazy he was generally the best player on the team. I don’t really have a problem with that characterization.

I seem to remember Baseball Tonight being the Barry Bonds show from 2001-2004.
Everyone stopped to watch his ABs and people flocked to what otherwise would be empty stadiums just to see him. That never happened with Jeter.
Yeah but people still didn't like him very much.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 15, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions
I think we're arguing semantics.
He was probably the most famous player, but I think you could make a case that Jeter was the ‘face’ of baseball because of his popularity and the fact that he was widely well-liked.
by Aaron Campeau on Mar 15, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions
The fact that he's never been touched by steroid rumors in the steroid era

~Till the Halo burns out...

My standards are just high for that kind of anointment. When I think of “Face of _ Sport” I think of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods or Babe Ruth. People who barely know of the sport still know who that is and will forever. I just don’t see Jeter at that point.

I’ll never forget what Loria did to my Expos. (well, at least that was my team in All-Star Baseball 2001)

Lopez is also gonna play.
Man has his offense taken huge strides. His range is kinda meh but we could see an increase in Lopez’s OBP/SLG. Would a .300+/.350+OBP/.450+SLG season be realistic?
You got slurved bitch.
I'd like to be that optimistic but these games don't really count any more than spring training
We’ll see how he does once the season starts, it’s certainly not a bad thing that he’s mashing everything in sight now though.
I'm optimistic because of his apparent change in approach.
If he was just mashing I wouldn’t care, but because he’s mashing and taking pitches and walking I’m encouraged.

Did they have velocity readings in other games?
This is the only time I recall.
Corco-esque
Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

So I just got here.
Please tell me Felix pitched awesome in the Venezuela game?
If you call 4 walks in 4.2 innings awesome....

I do not
call that awesome. Got a chance to look at his line and…eh. He didn’t give up any runs though, so that’s good.
I believe that is results-based analysis.
Haha I typed anal.
He didn't go.

On that throw from home
that guy is out at the plate I think. They were a little too quick to throw the guy out at 2nd.
