Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Chad Cordero ---> M's

Larry Stone on Baker's blog

I'll have a full story posted soon, but we've learned that the Mariners have reached an agreement with former All-Star closer Chad Cordero on a minor-league deal.

Cordero is coming off major shoulder surgery (torn labrum) last July, so he's not ready to pitch yet, but it's a solid gamble for the future. If he returns to health -- and the Mariners have had a scout monitoring his throwing sessions for the past month, and like what they see -- he could easily wind up as their closer. This guy saved 47 games to lead the National League in 2005, and he's just 26 (he turns 27 in a few days).

Cordero should be in camp by the weekend. He became a free agent in October when the Nationals took him off their 40-man roster. He made $6.2 million last year.

UPDATE: The Mariners have officially announced the deal. It's a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. Cordero is expected in camp on Friday.

Here's a quote from Jack Zduriencik:

"We are going to take it one step at a time, but we are optimistic that Chad can help us this season," Zduriencik said. "Chad has been a quality Major League closer and we look forward to his contributions to our ballclub in 2009."

Star-divide

Interesting. So maybe Jack Z had an idea about the closer situation all along.

What do you know

We even got to keep Morrow too!

These are the signings that make Bavasi look like a mentally challenged 12 year old playing MLB 09. Cheap talent (actual proven all-star caliber talent) that we would’ve given Halman and a draft pick up for two years ago. Maybe injury prone but he’s way young and has succeeded in a role that is not filled yet for this team. Bravo.

Ah

very well then. It’s hard to remember that not every one of his moves were God-awful. Most of them but not all I guess.

by Woodinville_12thMan on Mar 12, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Not most.

Bavasi’s signings were generally decent. He did get us Beltre, for example.

Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

Uhhhhhh

Bavasi was almost universally terrible at player aquistion with the exception of Beltre and a few nifty bullpen pickups

by Robert on Mar 12, 2009 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions

He signed Beltre for all the wrong reasons too

Bavasi’s strength was bullpen building. He got lucky with Beltre

If your expertise lies in building a successful bullpen

that doesn’t bode well for your career.

Give me 6 examples of this happening.

First example doesn't correlate. Second example: fine, I was being a "flip-flopper."

I would explain, but that would mean breaching the no politics rule.

Wow.

Never even a whisper that we were scouting the guy. This is pretty awesome considering it’s a minor league contract.

Jack Zduriencik is my most favorite M’s acquisition ever.

Didn't see that coming.

Neat.

You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.

This is awesome.

Who knows if he’ll actually be himself again after surgery but it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t because we got him for nothing.

Holy crap did we ever win the Putz trade now, the media is stupid.

I can't believe this is a minor-league deal

I can’t believe Jack Zduriencik is our GM.

I feel so out of place rooting for a team that signs former All-Stars to no-risk, high-reward contracts.

This is only his age-27 season?

Wow. I had assumed Cordero was in his very-late 20’s at the youngest.

Wonderful signing, for all the obvious reasons. I’m thrilled.

by katal on Mar 12, 2009 8:48 PM PDT reply actions

Why?

Granted I like the deal, but there is a decent chance he never gets back to being a productive pitcher.

by Scrupio on Mar 12, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Even if he doesn't why would that make it a bad signing?

He’s a no-risk signing with high upside, how could anyone possibly not like that?

by OlSalty on Mar 12, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

I voted Yes. Maybe something to do with blocking Fields? or Ichiro from pitching?

by Scrupio on Mar 12, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay. Wow. This was unexpected.

I um, wow. Hoo boy. I’m a straight man trapped in a gay man’s body. I uh… Well, let’s just say I fooled the hottest blind woman in Seattle into thinking these tupperware bowls were rock hard pecs. It’s been a tough life, but I’m getting more comfortable with myself by the day. I even stopped showering with my sweats on. Wow! I’m really glad you had me do this! I feel so liberated! Also I enjoy Harry Potter fan fiction erotica, and dabble in the furry lifestyle. I might be Sandfrog’s number one fan. Sometimes I have moments wherein I say to myself, “dude – fuck this shit. I need to dance tonight.”

Hey, thanks man. This was great.

Whew. Chad Cordero.

I saw on another site as just the “Cordero signing” and was afraid that it was Francisco Cordero for a minute.
