MLS Cup Will Be Hosted by Seattle

SEATTLE (March 11, 2009) – Seattle Sounders FC and the passionate soccer fans in the Pacific Northwest will host Major League Soccer’s premier event, MLS Cup 2009, at Qwest Field on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 8:30 p.m. ET (live on ESPN).

Story Link

The event was awarded in part as a reward for the Sounders season ticket sales, now over 20,000. For reference, the average attendance at an MLS game during the 2008 season was around 16,400.

For season ticket holders (woo!), the game is labeled as Friendly Match C and thus included in your already purchased package. That joins the Sounders-Chelsea game this summer and the nifty free scarf as perks of being part of the Sounders inaugural season. I am enjoying an ownership group so committed to the fans.

Also, hi Mr. Bettman.

Please bring us an NHL team.

Rec times a million

Also maybe have an all-star game here too.

Distant second to getting a team.

All-star games are lame in general and hockey is no exception.

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I always find the NBA all-star game entertaining in an absurdist comedy way

because nobody really bothers to play defense. the NHL one’s the same way but I think the NBA one’s more fun to watch.

by pdb on Mar 11, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

That may be true.

I have not watched the NBA for a long time, so it may be a decent ASG relative to the sport.

If they had an NHL one in Seattle, I would go for the skills competitions only.

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

The last two minutes of this year's NBA ASG were funny

because every time a guy advanced the ball past the halfway line the defense just cleared out (I mean like headed to the sidelines cleared out) and whoever had the ball just threw up a big alley-oop for whoever was near the basket to slam home. Funny.

Also

Any chance we could write a letter to the commisioner, or any of the teams that look like they are ready to pack up and leave and try to sell Seattle/Portland to them?

by Fin on Mar 11, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

The NHL wants/ed to come to Seattle.

But they will (rightfully) not come here until there’s an arena for them to play in.

There happens to be arena space in downtown Seattle with some money sitting in the pockets of an OKC ownership group that would be fun to take…

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

SHUT UP. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS PERSON

(unless you want to move a team to Portland AND Seattle, which would be holy hell awesome)

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Would hockey be profitable enough in all three locations.

Well, I guess Nashville and Phoenix have set the bar low.

by Fin on Mar 11, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

The Winterhawks draw between 8-10K on weekends

and typically between 3-5K during the week, with no real publicity of note and a team that sucks. Properly marketed, an NHL team would do well here.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 11, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I am thinking Seattle could do well too.

I mean, there are minor league teams in Seattle, Everett, Tri-Cities, and Spokane. There is definitely a big enough market here.

Ridiculously SSS

Everett draws around 6K on average I believe,

Seattle around 5K, and yeah, same deal as Portland. That’s junior hockey.

We may not get the NHL rivalry going any time soon

but a fresh new MLS rivalry could be here soon. And a new Beavers stadium.

They're managing their expansion better this time around

They’re not trying to take over the US sporting landscape like they did in the 70’s, they’re just finding their niche and maximizing it. They’re being smart about it.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 12, 2009 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Seattle this year, Philly next to get to 16 teams.

And then adding 2 teams for, I believe, 2011. And what I think is good is that they’re looking at mostly untapped markets and areas which will provide soccer-specific venues (Seattle being a rare exception). Portland, Vancouver, Ottawa and St. Louis I believe are the leading four cities for 2011.

And they are being a lot smarter about it, letting the league stabilize first before trying to expand coast to coast. Given how low salaries are in the league, I’d bet most of the teams are profitable year in, year out.

by Matthew on Mar 12, 2009 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

And unless their business model has changed

the league owns all player contracts except for one “beckham rule” player which, in combination with the fairly low (by sports standards) salary cap, means the league’s financial picture can’t/won’t be as out of whack as those of the other major US sports because the league won’t let it.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 12, 2009 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions

to clarify

they own even the beckham rule contract, it’s just that the contract signed by that player doesn’t have to abide by the salary cap. Each team gets one of these exceptions, and the rest of the team is subject to the salary cap.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 12, 2009 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I know the Beckham rule is realitivley new.

But I thought the league has always controlled the contracts?

by Robert on Mar 12, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep. I wasn't clear above.

League ownership of contracts is the big reason the league will probably outlast all the other US soccer league incarnations – from day 1 the league office has been really tight with the finances of the league, in an attempt to grow in a controlled manner and avoid the boom-and-bust that killed the NASL.

Teams in Canada do not need to move.

If anything, they need more (Hamilton first, Winnipeg maybe).

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

Phoenix → Seattle/Portland
Nashville → Hamilton
Tampa Bay/Atlanta/Carolina → Winnipeg

by Fin on Mar 11, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Apparently the Isles aren't in the best shape either

Which would be my ideal team move if we had to uproot a non recent expansion team.

by Robert on Mar 11, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Check it.

Phoenix moves back to Winnipeg
Nashville moves to Seattle (woo Admirals!)
Atlanta moves to Portland
Either Islanders or Panthers move to Hamilton

Divisional realignment
Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Edmonton, Calgary
San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas
Winnipeg, Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis

Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Buffalo
Boston, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Washington, Carolina, Tampa, Columbus, Islanders/Panthers

Canada gets 2 more teams
The northwest division gets the SEA-POR-VAN and EDM-CAL natural rivalries.
SJ-ANA-LA rivalry remains intact, addition of DEN makes more geographical sense
MIN gets a close rival in WIN, DET-CHI-STL remain intact
MON-OTT-TOR-BUF add HAM to the intense rivalries
BOS joins in with the NYR-NJ geographical rival, PHI-PIT remains intact
the rest get dumped into the southeast.

by Matthew on Mar 11, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

You should send this plan to Bettman and co.

The only thing I don’t like is the Panthers being moved. I would rather see the Lightning or Islanders being moved.

I know where it is, I used to live there.

But you are right, from Miami it is very far away. I think they figure that the richer people who retire from up north in West Palm Beach and Broward counties would be more likely to go to games than in Miami.

Maybe I am just biased because I am still sort of a fan. But I guess that should be all the more reason that they move over here.

by bluemax on Mar 12, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

The price can be justified, depending on how much it changes

English teams, particularly mine change their kits every year… and every year I spend the £80 to buy both the new home and away shirts.

However, if they were £60 each, but were only changed every, say 2-5 years then it would be worth the added price alone.

by Indigo_Satellite on Mar 11, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

English teams change each of their kits on a two year rolling basis

so as to not roll out three new kits (home, away, alt) all at once. There’s always new crap coming out. My favorite one is the Arsenal “special Champions League kit” – the exact same kit with a new font for the letters and numbers of the personalized shirts. They think people will buy anything they throw out there. The sad thing is people do.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Mar 11, 2009 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

In the Premisership they change it on a 2 year basis

but not when you support a League 1 team. Crewe’s kit gets changed every year, and the price never goes down.

Theoretically 25,000 does count as "tens"

just, you know, like 2,500 of them.

And given how that’s just season ticket holders, I’m guessing the number of people there will actually greatly exceed that.

On a side note, if you really think there are only 16 soccer fans in Seattle, how in God’s name do you expect them to trash Qwest Field? Suicide bombings?

by seattlebruin on Mar 12, 2009 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Have you seen soccer?

The fans get so bored they start by chanting as the players dive act like they have broken their legs then magically reenter the game. Then when the one score in the game happens they start throwing flares. After that the full on riot starts, then somehow the stands collapse. then they shake hands and do it again next game.

Vicious cycle IMO.
