Morrow Unlikely to Start Season in Rotation
Fresh on the heels of Shannon Drayer's report on how Morrow felt after throwing a bullpen session, Larry LaRue expounds on the effects. Morrow's anticipated next start has already been scratched, leaving him weeks behind where he needs to be.
The good news is that, according to Morrow, "they say it's nothing structural, just like a strained flexor bundle." Morrow mentioned in Drayer's piece that he's felt this before but was able to pitch through it because his arm was in mid-season shape. Given that, this doesn't appear to be too serious on the forefront. Then again, I hear flexor bundle and I think Joel Pineiro circa 2004.
Of course, the reasonable among us never expected Morrow to spend the whole season in the rotation and log 200-odd innings. Morrow simply doesn't have enough innings under his belt to have made that a likely target to hit. Still, it's a bit disconcerting to see the flareups begin so soon.
For now, we're in a wait-and-see mode when it comes to the team's plans. Hopefully they do not react in a knee jerk manner and move Morrow back into the bullpen.

At the very least, this creates an opening for RRS to get some starts out of the gate.
I have a totally irrational love for him and want him to kick ass until he’s 50.
Is it possible he starts the season in the bullpen in an effort to get him in shape
and goes down to Tacoma to be stretched out when his arm is ready? I obviously want him to be in the rotation, but I’m hoping there’s a rational explanation for him starting the year as a reliever.
So is your preference for him to start the season in Tacoma as a starter on a strict pitch limit?

It's too early for me to have much of a preference.
It would involve speculating too much on how much this injury is an injury and not just Spring tightness that will go away.
Yeah, let's get through this before thinking about that kind of stuff
Let’s figure out when he’ll be able to throw and how well he’ll be able to throw

Now it might be Washburn
I wouldn’t be surprised if Griffey plays left for that one either

Anything to make Washburn lose and cry like a baby.

Strange Clone..
Of Washburn and Macaulay Culkin? Though sadly he will not just pitch at home alone.
Too bad? Sorry.

I'm liking the early returns on 2009 being the season of panic.
I have a lot of pent up panic that’s gone unused for the past 18 months. It’s a bit stale and crusty around the edges, but I think it’ll still do if you pop it in the microwave for 15 seconds.
Grrrr...
Yaaawwwwwwwnnnn…
I’ve tried really really REALLY hard to be optimistic about Morrow since day 1 when they drafted him. Really hard. Really REALLY hard.
He wasn’t really a starter in college (24 of 43 games in 3 years, only his 3rd year as a full-time starter), and he had injury concerns even back then. I didn’t like that there was a lot of talk about him being a bullpen pitcher even months before the M’s precisely decided to do just that with him in 2007 (rather than sending him down to the minors to develop into a starting pitcher).
This still may turn out to be minor and not a big deal — I’d even say the chances of that are pretty good. But any time I hear of “Morrow” and “HURT!” my Pavolvian reaction is to say SCREW BOB FONTAINE!!!! I hated that draft choice then, and that they’ve taken him down a wonky development path makes me hate it even moreso today.
