Things Geoff Baker Taught Me
Baker with clutch insight:
How does this impact the M's? Well, the Nats are now an organization in disarray. Not exactly where you want to be as you go about figuring out whether to draft San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with your No. 1 overall pick. If Strasburg isn't taken by the Nats, who will want to do some negotiating on a signing bonus before the draft, then the M's have a clear shot at the pitcher.
Awesome. Taking this logical tack a bit further:
* If the 2009 World Series isn't won by one of the 29 teams not named "Mariners", then the M's have a clear shot at the Commissioner's Trophy. *
Nationals brain trust as they go about figuring out whether to draft San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg with their No. 1 overall pick:
A Man left in the Nats' front office: OK, I know we're an organization in disarray, but...
Man: Very cute. Listen: we have to draft Stephen Strasburg.

Wilbur
From Bob Condotta’s update:
Asked if he will be able to keep in contact much with the WBC players, Wakamatsu said Ichiro has texted him a few times. Asked what’s in the texts, the manager noted that Ichiro called him "Wilbur,‘’ which is his real first name. "I said only my close friends call me Wilbur, you must be close,’’ Wakamatsu said.
Ichiro is one funny motherfucker.

so our manager's name is Wilbur Wakamatsu...
This makes me very happy.

Or he just refuses to call Waka by his preferred name
more of Ichiro being a douche.

Is Wakamatsu's preferred name Waka?
You’re such a douche!

I think I speak for everyone when I say Ichiro is not a douche.
Why would I watch Transformers when I can play with them at my house?

Wilbur?
What kind of name is “Wilbur” for a manager?
It’s the radiant, humble, and terrific name of some pig!

There was never any chance the Nats would pass on Strasburg.
Bowden’s presence or firing makes not a whit of difference. I know sportswriters have to fill the time by writing about something, but this is/was getting seriously silly. The Nats will draft Strasburg (unless he gets critically injured or something). Signing him is another question entirely.

They will not draft him if they're unable to sign him
It completely fucks them because then they have to go for pure signability for the second overall pick at 2010, and said pick can demand the moon from them.
by Graham on Mar 1, 2009 10:43 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They're going to pay the moon for Strasburg if they have to.
They certainly have the money. Tons of money. Seriously: there is a ridiculous amount of salary space left for the Nationals. Add in the fact that passing on Strasburg would be a near-unrecoverable blow to the organization’s credibility among fans, and you have the closest thing I can imagine to 100% certainty that they will draft Strasburg and give him a Wietersesque bonus.
Let me put it another way: I’m through with the Nats if they fuck this up.

I could see how you would be through with the Nationals if Strasburg falls to another team.
But that other team is the Mariners. You are in a win-win situation.
The only thing I see keeping the Nats from drafting Strasburg is if someone else emerges as the clear number one. We are a full college season away from the draft and anything can happen between now and then. Strasburg will likely remain the number one starting pitcher available, but a big bat could easily emerge.

It's almost like I responded to a quote of yours:
“The Nats will draft Strasburg (unless he gets critically injured or something). Signing him is another question entirely.”

Good point.
I threw that “signing him” bit in there at the last second because…well crap, how can you not be a little skittish after the Crow mess? Rationally speaking, they’re going to draft & sign him for sure. But still there’s always The Fear.

Only way that kid becomes a Mariner, is if he demands that Washington not sign him cause
he wants to stay on the West Coast.
by Rudy4three on Mar 1, 2009 2:48 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
He won't sign with the Nationals or Mariners.
He’s going back to school if one drafts him. He only wants to play for the Padres.
There are no good individual basketball statistics.

Didn't I read...
in Moneyball that teams are not allowed to negotiate contracts before they are drafted? I think they mentioned that it’s a rule but nobody follows it, so it doesn’t matter.

woops...
I obviously meant “are not allowed to negotiate contracts with potential draft picks before they are drafted.”
by zeeehjee on Mar 1, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I am sure everyone feels each other out by draft day.
It is a pretty big investment. They have to know Strasburg’s signing range (4-6m$ or 8-10m$). The Nationals like every team only has so much for signing players in the draft.
by mark sobba on Mar 1, 2009 12:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't that be true of any player drafted 1st overall?
by lemonverbena on Mar 1, 2009 12:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They were, but I don't think thats true anymore
after the lawsuit won by that college player in Ohio.

It's...
often done. Teams will often call guys and say “if we were to draft you here and offer x dollars, would you sign?” The oral promises that result aren’t binding contracts, but the conversations themselves don’t violate the CBA as I understand it.
