Ichiro --> Pitcher
Joking? No.
Translation: Ichiro throws 56 pitches in the bullpen. Busts out his fastball to the tune of around 90 MPH. "I ain't shittin' you today. This is fuckin' serious," Ichiro said. Reports say he also busted out a forkball.
"I expect to be closer for the Mariners," continued Ichiro. "Roy Corcoran? Tyler Walker? They traded J.J. for a 4th outfielder and a pair of socks. WTF. I'm just making sure we're better than that."
With extra non-translation translations...

Online translators are terrible.
So unless he knows Japanese it’s hard to say exactly. I think it’s something about Ichiro being an “emergency” pitcher for the Japanese WBC team.

I actually know...
And am not bothering to translate it all the way.

Care to elaborate?
Because on its own, this reads very asshole-ish.

My Japanese friend tells me that the Ichiro dialogue that IceBreakerX wrote in the last paragraph is a complete IceBreakerX fabrication.
Ichiro is bad ass cool, not asshole-ish like that.
In the article Ichiro has only one line of dialogue. “This is what I came here to do today. It’s not playing around.”
The Japanese team wants to avoid a Jamie Burke-like fiasco happening to them in the WBC and Ichi is the man the manager tapped to prevent it.
Bad ass cool.

I figured as much that Ichiro wouldn't say things like that in public.
I’m asking if Icebreaker intentionally posted the japanese text, mistranslated it and refused to provide the actual translation for any legitimate reason.

I meant it as sarcasm for pete's sake.
If your BS meters are that far off, then I have nothing to comment. I made it painfully obvious by using a non-name, as we have no Tyler Walker on the roster.
If you fail to see the humor, then I apologize.

The problem isn't the joke translation, it's the fact that you know what it actually says and are choosing not to provide a translation.

Yes.
The problem is this comment, taken in conjunction with the main text.

Boohoo.
It’s not like I linked it to an article of Ichiro brand dog food or something.
Whatever. I’m not into quarreling over such trite matters. Lailaihei had it down anyways.

Okay, so I thought I messed up Tyler Johnson and Tyler Walker.
I forgot we actually signed two Tylers this offseason. My bad.

On my part I'm sorry I took you literally, but when you got jerks like Geoff Baker looking around for any excuse/fake story to make Ichiro look bad
as a fan, I got a little touchy about any possible effects of the comment.
And my Japanese friend told me what the article said.
Thanks anyway for an interesting link and article. I’m starved for any news about any of our good players and Ichi is the best (in terms of entertainment value also!).

Of course it's a fabrication.
What else would it be?

Ichiro has said he's wanted to pitch at least once, hasn't he?

I always assumed this day would come on Ichiro Day when he announces his retirement
And not a day sooner

I take some comfort in the fact that he hit the low 90s
I’m cool with whatever Ichiro wants to do, basically, so long as he doesn’t get hurt doing it. Pitching does seem like a pretty dumb extraneous risk, though. It’s not like Aaron Boone playing a little off-season basketball and getting his contract voided.

I would imagine that Ichiro knows what his body can handle.
With the extensive stretch routine and all, I’m sure he knows his limits. Hopefully he also knows to stay within them.
You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen.

Thinking about it, while it is pretty stupid
it would be so badass. I mean, we freaked out when Jamie Burke pitched that inning, because it was awesome/hilarious. If Ichiro hits 91 and actually strikes someone out? How amazing would that be? [Again I will reiterate that it’s risky and probably never worth it.]

Hey, I see what you're doing.
Stop it, you Angels fan saboteur!

Then I want him to do it in a Mariners uniform not for the WBC
If the first time Ichiro doesn’t break 200 hits he decides to continue the rest of his career as a two way outfielder/closer I’d be totally up for that

If I know my baseball rules correctly, the DH doesn't HAVE to be used for the pitcher.
So if Ichiro came in to pitch a tie game, the pitcher would move to the outfield, you’d put in a defensive replacement for the pitcher, and that defensive replacement wouldn’t bat.
I think.

In MLB, the DH has to be used for the pitcher
It’s different in different leagues, though. I think it’s rule 6.10 if you want to check.

If Felix can hit a Grand Slam then Ichiro can strike some one out. Let is be so.
by aestivalis on Feb 8, 2009 8:07 AM PST reply actions 1 recs
I think Ichiro striking out a Major League hitter is significantly more likely than Felix hitting another grand slam

Agreed. I'd heard he used to be a phenomenal pitcher in middle/high school.
He’s a fantastic athlete as well, and that can’t hurt.
