Steve Kelley--->Cult of Griffey
Yadda yadda yadda, Griffey is awesome, we should sign him ASAP, there's no possible downside to this, play him 3-4 times a week in the OF, he'll put butts in the seats, he's worth 5 million.
Seriously, we're going to have to listen to this guy.
Not to mention his one sentence paragraphs.
Oh, and Art Thiel's going to be out of a job in a couple months.
Sigh.

It makes me sad that Art is losing his job.
On the plus side, Jim Moore is too.

and Kelley actually gets airtime, as well.
it’s just wrong.

Hey!
wonder if Thiel would like to join the KIRO postgame show.
Now that would be entertaining.
by msb on Feb 5, 2009 9:51 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And it would also be awesome if they could somehow get Larry Stone involved.
A Drayer/Thiel/Stone team would be the best postgame crew ever.

I would love to see a picture of Thiel standing next to Drayer.

I want a picture of me standing next to Drayer
so I can remind myself that at least one person in the world is more vertically challenged than I am.

This

Steve
Kelley was
bound to write a
piece
eventually to
spurn us for
daring to disparage the Kid

who once held us all in rapt attention
just
do
it

Honestly, from a strictly business standpoint Griffey would make a ton of sense...
Especially in this economy, ticket and merch sales are sure to be sluggish. The man would get asses in the seats and jerseys off the rack.
From an on the field perspective it would be a horrid move, but if I was owning the team, and seeing that this probably isn’t going to be a World Series year for the M’s, I’d probably make Z do it and tell him that part of the big profit made off Griffey could be spent in next year’s free agency.
by SethGrandpa on Feb 6, 2009 12:59 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Upwards $40 Million is coming off the books by next season.
The M’s don’t need Griffey to get a bigger payroll.
by ThundaPC on Feb 6, 2009 3:56 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I just don't see Griffey filling the seats for more then a few games
He’s got a definite novelty effect but I feel like besides the first and last week or so he’s not going to draw more than an extra thousand fans per game on average

I don't think having him back on the team would make me buy more tickets than I already do.
and you might get a one-game bump from the average fan, but I doubt they would suddenly drop for a season of 16-game plan.
by msb on Feb 6, 2009 7:23 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
If you want to call it an extra thousand...
Thats 82 games * 1000 fans * say $20 a ticket = $1.64 mil … add in clothing, food and beer sales from that and it could be around $3.5… just gross numbers, but a thousand fans at every game adds up fast
by CHEAP ROUNDS AT NORM'S on Feb 6, 2009 8:29 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Griffey's salary would be more than 3.5 million
Thus making this a bad move.
by Rollo Tomasi on Feb 6, 2009 8:40 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True, but I think it'd be a lot more than 1000 fans
I think Griffey would add much more than 82,000 seats over the season… think of the obvious griffey tshirt or bobblehead or locomotive or hydroplane or whatever other days they think up of now… point is, it would be a plus move in terms of money… i wouldn’t expect much production from him but if he adds 20 hr’s the fans will call it a good move

If the difference between Girffey and making a move for a superior player...
is the difference between a playoff spot and no playoffs, it’s a horrible move. And no, the M’s are not as far away from the playoffs as you think.
by eponymous_coward on Feb 6, 2009 9:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Speaking strictly as a person who attends tons of games.
My enjoyment at the park would be seriously compromised by Safeco being overrun with Griffey wanks. We already have way to many people attending games that do not care about the team or the game. The last thing we need to do is turn 2009 into a 6 month tribute.
by Sec 108 on Feb 6, 2009 9:39 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe
although there are only 81 games.
by Rollo Tomasi on Feb 6, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but if you lose say $2M to engender some goodwill from the fanbase after last year, it's worth it, isn't it?
I don’t think the Griffey problem comes down to economics at all. I think it comes down to whether or not he’d be blocking a younger player with potential and whether or not he’d actually help the team (he won’t)
by seattlebruin on Feb 6, 2009 7:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Mariners consider budgets to be a year by year thing.
Thus, Griffey putting butts in the seats in 2009 does nothing to help the 2010 budget.

If they do bring Griffey back,
they should have him wear a different number.

by JI on Feb 6, 2009 10:50 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
People who still own old Griffey 24 shirts or jerseys may not buy a new one if he comes back and wears 24 again.
by Matthew on Feb 6, 2009 10:57 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Wouldn't it be easier for the team to change their uniforms?

The cynic in me thinks the M's will change their unis in the next couple years
just because they’ve had the same ones for so long.

I just dislike the theme in general.
It’s really boring. The colors are okay but the logo and typeface suck. I’d like to see some dark green, too.

I'm the same way
The one nice thing is that the design’s not dated after all these years, but I think that’s because it’s so dull.

It's baseball
I WANT the unis to look conservative.
by marc w on Feb 6, 2009 1:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Conervative is fine.
Good even. I just don’t think it looks like a logo for a baseball team. It’s straight out of the corporate world.

Also, I really tend to dislike block lettering.
Script all the way. The nautical theme doesn’t bother me, I just think it could be done much better.

As much as I am satisfied with the current uniforms
and updated version of the originals would be excellent.

I agree. I wish either the Hawks or Ms would incorporate some black, though.
It’s probably not a popular thought, but I like it aesthetically.

Speaking of Thiel
he has a column today about Zduriencik
by msb on Feb 6, 2009 3:41 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Interesting that he frames that Heilman trade as possibly embarrassing, that Zduriencik didn't keep him.
It just seems strange that roster moves aren’t considered akin to moving chess pieces around a board.
