BP ranks the M's prospects
Kevin Goldstein's ranking of the top Mariners prospects is finally out. It's subscriber-only, but the top 10 is fair game (and visible to the nonpaying masses anyway), so here goes:
Five-Star Prospects
1. Greg Halman, CF
Four-Star Prospects
2. Phillippe Aumont, RHP
3. Michael Saunders, CF
4. Joshua Fields, RHP
Three-Star Prospects
5. Juan Ramirez, RHP
6. Carlos Triunfel, SS
7. Dennis Raben, RF
8. Adam Moore, C
9. Jharmidy De Jesus, 3B
Two-Star Prospects
10. Matt Tuiasosopo, 3B
11. Mario Martinez, 3B
He says pretty much what we know: Lots of risk, and a lot of potential reward. As we found out in the comments of KG's top 100 list, he's not super high on Triunfel. He has a lot of good things to say about him here, though. He mentions his contact ability and an arm that is an "absolute cannon that some graded as a pure 80 on the scouting scale." It looks like the big reason he has him in the three-star section is significant questions about Triunfel's power potential. I guess a lot of the scouts he talks to just don't see it.
And just to get everyone angry, I'll include this line from the Triunfel section:
Path to the Big Leagues: Adrian Beltre is in the last year of his contract, which should be cause for celebration for Seattle fans whether Triunfel makes it or not.
Dammit, Kevin.

But mine has inflammatory Beltre-bashing.

I said I was trying, not that I would succeed.

I never look down there either.
Don’t feel too bad.

I'd say "but KG's not a stat guy," but still, he should know better.
I’ve always liked his stuff, so I’m not about to burn down his house or anything, but come on, guys. It’s over. You’re all wrong. Beltre’s contract was a success.

BP doesn't know defense, and if you don't know defense, Beltre isn't special

And Beltre hits a two-run double.
Take that!

BP should know defense.
It’s not like it’s tough to track down the information these days.

But he is special offensively too
See, I did a fanpost

KG's better than this
This is just a bad product. From the Beltre comment to “Tui is a good defender” to the ridiculous Triunfel assessment and the hilarious Ten Best Under 25 portion, this is just bad.
Rowland-Smith or Triunfel. KG’s going with RRS? Good luck with that.

Different order of mostly the same names
1. Triunfel
2 – 5: Halman, Aumont, Saunders, Ramirez. I don’t care about the order.
6. Moore
7-15: Raben, Fields, Tui, Cleto, Pineda, Carp, DeJesus, Martinez, Morban. Again, not really concerned with the order.

Has Tui really come back into everybody's attention?
His latter-half 2008 was pretty impressive, but how impressive was it?

Impressive enough.
Tui from June on: 268 ABs, 81 H, 20 2B, 13 HR, 65 K, .302/~.391/.522.
I don’t have the walk numbers, but the only thing one could really find concerning about that line is the excessive strikeouts. The BABIP was a little high at ~.358, but his career average there is .339, so it’s not like he had three straight months of unbelievable luck, just a little better than usual.
I’m more concerned about his defense at this point.

Triunfel only a 3 star prospect?
I will smash your face into a jelly.

I think thats probably right for
a high risk – high reward player. At his age there are a lot of things that can happen.

Why is Michael Inoa so highly ranked then?
by Mariner John on Feb 27, 2009 8:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
His reward is a lot higher than even Triunfel's, according to scouts, it seems
by patsfan on Feb 27, 2009 9:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think people are more enamored
With the throwing hard at age 16 thing. It also seems like splitting hairs. If Triunfel’s reward is perennial all-star player and Ynoa’s is perennial all-star pitcher… well the difference becomes one of preference.

My impression is that Ynoa is regarded by some as having the so-called "generational talent"
While at this point, Triunfel’s ceiling is more like all-star 3B and occasional MVP candidate.
I don’t disagree with your point, though.
by patsfan on Feb 28, 2009 5:30 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Odd that he'd be a generational talent.
I’d argue that Felix isn’t that far removed from his age group that Ynoa gets to have that honor.

The hilarious thing
Is that it doesn’t get much more high risk/high reward than Halman or Aumont. You can’t use risk to justify calling Triunfel a three star prospect in the same article that you rank Halman as a five star prospect.

No I agree that its all a little out of whack
I’m pretty sure thats the reason he was put at 3 stars though. I’m sure he’d rocket up the list as he ages.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 27, 2009 9:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Ehh
I’d say KG just talked to a few of the handful of scouts out there that don’t think he’s really 19 and are holding his suspension against him. He’s got a reputation around the game as something of a high maintenance player, and a lot of scouts get down on those kids really quick.
It’s more an off-field ranking than an on-field ranking.

What if his real name is Esmailyn Gonzalez?
