OFFTOP - Feb. 26 - Now I'm In the Club Edition
The list of regulars who haven't created an off-topic thread is now one shorter. I win!
Today's topic of choice for me is: Why does 2K hate me? And why does it hate you?
Word is coming out that franchise mode in MLB 2K9 is broken. For example, in several simulations by some guy at Operation Sports (later in the thread), Tim Lincecum became a free agent after 2010 because the team couldn't afford to keep him. He's not a free agent until after 2013! Below-market-rate Cy Young winners are affordable to anyone. Except the Marlins, maybe.
This is the last straw for me, I think. After three years of putting up with this stuff and pretending that it's about to get better, I seriously think I'm going to go buy a PS3 after work and just get The Show.
What are you guys doing for your baseball gaming entertainment this year? Riding the 2K train to hell? Going back to MVP 05?
EDIT: It appears that 2K is aware of the glitch and it will be patched on Day One. Still kinda scary . . .
__________
I'm sure the video game chat gets annoying to those of you who don't care, so a million space pardons, but I'm freaking out right now. Feel free to strike up a 600-comment thread about music I've never heard of!
And CNN has a Q&A with Matt Groening about his future.
Oh, and actual baseball! Though that might be too on-topic.

2K9 for PC is just a port of the 360 version with no online.
It’s dirt-cheap, though. Like $20.

I had a little bit of faith since they pulled Kush off the game and gave it to Visual Concepts.
And they definitely made some good strides, judging by the demo and the videos I’ve seen. But there are always a couple things that are just too bad to ignore.

I wish MLB would just not sell an exclusive license.
The lack of competition is killing sports games.

But it is profitable.
Shit, I’m about to spend $500 on one game.

Yup.
The ability to play Metal Gear and LittleBigPlanet is a nice bonus, but those are things I could live without. But dammit I want a really good baseball game this year.

Resistance and Warhawk are a nice little treat too
by Fuzz on Feb 26, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'll definitely play both Resistance games.
LittleBigPlanet is first on my list, then I’ll get around to playing Killzone, MGS4 and . . . that might be it. But this is where GameFly comes in very handy: I can catch up on a dozen games in the next month or two without breaking the bank.

LittleBigPlanet is overrated...sorry to ruin any hopes

I was thinking the same....
I’m sick of no baseball games for the Wii but Power Pros. It’s good, but you want to play a different type of baseball game.
But $400 for a system with no backwards compatibility? Fuck that.

So, in watching a second season episode of 30 Rock last night, I realized that it may be one of the best shows ever.
They made a fucking lemon party (lemonparty.org) joke on network TV. How the hell do they get away with the stuff they do? Liz’s dad’s name is Dick Lemon, and he said, “It wouldn’t be a Lemon party without Old Dick!”
I will smash your face into a jelly.

I stopped playing baseball video games about 5 years ago.
Right about the time I started getting heavy into analysis. The games just frustrate me way too much.

I can no longer play MVP '05.
Too many years consecutively, and I’m just absolutely bored with the gameplay (even after going through the great MVPMods updates). Because the player development and CPU controlled aspects are garbage as well, I’m going to have to suck it up and buy a PS3 or 360, I suppose.

So here's a baseball question that has nothing to do with games or actual baseball
what sorts of baseball variants did you play as a kid? I grew up in a ranch-style home, and we played whiffle ball in the street facing the house – ground balls were strikes, five strikes and you were out, one out per at bat. Anything in the yard or off the front of the house was a single, off the roof was a double, over the roof was a home run. For some reason we made no provision for triples.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
by pdb on Feb 26, 2009 10:06 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
All wiffle ball. We used to play at my friends house right in front of his living room window.
There was a small shrub that acted as the strike (as a backdrop), balls hit left of the power pole were foul, right of a certain bush were also foul. A ground ball had to be fielded and brought to the stump before the runner could sprint there, else it was a single. Doubles were to the street, triples to the far curb, and homers were anything that touched the lawn of the people across the street.
by abender20 on Feb 26, 2009 10:09 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh and I forgot the most imporant part!
We’d each choose a team and use their lineups, making sure the batter had to hit from the opposite side of the plate at least 4 times.
by abender20 on Feb 26, 2009 11:48 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
We played on my long but not very wide back yard.
Home plate was against one fence, and anything over the far fence was a home run. Anything off the poplar trees on the left or the roof on the right was a ground rule double (if fair). Balls and strikes were argued between the pitcher and hitter. You were out if we threw the ball at you and hit you when you weren’t on base (or if we beat you to first with ball in hand).
All bats were corked with duct tape and anything else we could find to make them heavier.

We played indoor baseball at a friend's house.
His parents had a big room that was just for baseball. Nerf-ish ball, plastic bats, throw pillows for bases, and if you hit above a certain fixture on the wall, it’s a home run.
by Teej on Feb 26, 2009 10:12 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm a huge wiffle ball guy to this day.
Rules tend to be determined by the field in use at the time. I’ve been working on a huge, cartoonish curveball this off-season and can’t wait to bust it out on my unsuspecting friends this spring.

I grew up near a cul-de-sac that was roughly baseball field shaped.
We used to play with a tennis ball and a super-skinny aluminum bat. For some reason I got it in my head one time to turn the bat around and hit with the handle. It’s amazing how much farther the ball went hitting this way.
I will smash your face into a jelly.

Not me as a kid, but
In Nicaragua we joined in a pickup neighborhood game where the kids were playing with a rolled up pair of socks as a ball and a large stick as the bat.

We played backyard wiffle ball with metal bats 1 on 1
all hits were “call it yourself,” with the exception of anything hit over the fence being a home run, and the batter always called balls/strikes. We also made up our own teams of players to play with. It was great fun, especially once we were both big enough to toss wiffle balls 40 mph, since we only had enough room to pitch from 20 feet (we have a big retaining wall separating the two parts of our yard)

That whole interview made me a little sad.
He didn’t seem to care that Life in Hell was taken out of LA Weekly. He seems to have no interest in making it available on-line, which seems like a perfect forum for it.
Really it sounds like he doesn’t really care too much about any of his work. It’s probably because he has so much money that he just goes home and swims in it like Scrooge McDuck.

Groening seemed to care.
His desire to keep Futurama going shows he cares. I got the 4 DVD’s of Futurama and they are great. I laugh, I cry, I put it away and go do something else. I hope Futurama gets picked up and they do a couple more seasons or movies or whatever. I love all of that Evergreener’s stuff.
by mark sobba on Feb 26, 2009 2:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I love Groenings work too. I remember where I was when the first full length episode aired.
Maybe I read the article wrong, but it sounded like – Life in Hell gets the boot? Meh – there are other papers and on-line is too hard. The Simpsons aren’t subversive or testing the limits of what they can do? Meh, but there are subtle movie references. Although he does seem pretty hopeful Futurama continues and seems to enjoy what he’s doing.
The quality of his (and all the other people that also work on the shows) is still good, I still watch The Simpsons every Sunday, I’ll pick up the last 2 Futurama movies when I have some spare cash, and I read Life is Swell every week.

I'd love to have Futurama back
but they’re a fear it could go the way of Family Guy and stay past it’s expiration date. On the other hand, I’d like them to have a last episode where they knew it was going to be the last episode… considering the constraints they were under, they did an admirable job of ending the show both times.

They were (are still) getting their asses handed to them by Microsoft and Nintendo, so that was one of the ways they were able to get the price of the console down a little bit.
by Teej on Feb 26, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It was definitely to cut costs
Since the PS3 had a vastly different hardware architecture they were unable to get software based emulation running. As a result, they had to essentially put a PS2 inside of the original PS3’s to allow for BC since it was a huge selling point for them, due to the massive catalog of available games.

I believe it may be true, to a small extent. But the added $100 worth of hardware to enable BC was the largest reason. The game sale boosting is a bit of a tinfoil hat thing in my eyes

How is it that only one person has mentioned Ennio Morricone? Go back and listen to the scores to For A Few Dollars More or The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Awesome.
I’d also like to point out that the late-90s were a renaissance for soundtracks. I wouldn’t necessarily call them “scores”, but Mallrats, Dazed and Confused, the X-Files, Rushmore (actually, Wes Anderson has great scores as well), Romeo and Juliet, Empire Records, An American Werewolf in Paris, and others all had fantastic music.

For what it's worth,
If you buy a PS3 at Best Buy this week, they’re giving away a $50 gift card AND your choice of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith or Guitar Hero 3 (bundles!), so that’s kinda badass. I’ll turn around and use that gift card on The Show. So I’m halfway to the rumored $100 price cut, and if I can sell the Guitar Hero game for $50 I’ll be all the way there.

by cwel87 on Feb 26, 2009 7:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought about that.
And really, the only games I want to play on PS2 are MVP 05 (though that should fade with The Show and maybe 2K9 being great) and my GTA games, but I also have those on Xbox, so I can play them on the 360. It would have been nice, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
But it does play PS1 games, which means I need to hit up my sister and get some of my old games back. I’m gonna wreck shit on Tobal No. 1.
by Teej on Feb 26, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I should also mention that I have a PS2 connected to another, smaller TV.

by Teej on Feb 26, 2009 7:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Certainly a fair point
I don’t have the same luxury. My PS2’s both exploded after consistent use, and I’d rather have an all-in-one center connected to my main television for the sake of playing PS2 games.
Frankly, there are a lot of great games on the PS3, but I don’t really play them since I’m not into games that much anymore. I just go and replay my old favorites, since I don’t have nearly enough time to sit down and marathon it. Although I might for RE5 if it’s close to as good as its predecessor

217 with a couple unlucky splits, 224 with a couple unlucky splits (lots of strikes in both), and then a 170 without being able to carry a goddamn thing. I was in the finals in 5 of my brackets, but ended up in 2nd in all of them. I could have won all of them with shooting just a 200. SO, the 170 caused me to win back $50 on my $30 instead of winning $125

I'd feel more sorry for you if I'd ever broken a 186. I bowl like 3 times a year at most anyway.

Don't feel bad.
I bowl league and I’ve only broken 200 three or four times.

That's really good (by my standards anyway).
I’ll forever by awed at the guy who bowled a 300 next to my friend’s 7th birthday party while all of us young’ns were using bumpers.

I've yet to witness a 300 game.
Last year in my league a guy missed one by a single pin.

We've had 4 shot in the last 6 weeks in my league
Stupid easy shot at Skyway. 4 300 games, a 288, 3 279 games, and last night a pair of 268 games. I’ve had several 300 games bowled against me in match play tournaments before, while in Juniors. It sucks, because every time that happened I also bowled very well (mid 200’s). But, what’re you gonna do?

Sounds like Skyway's lanes are as friendly as can be...

Incredibly
I hate it. There’s no challenge. If I throw a strike, I just need to do the same thing every time and I throw a bunch of strikes as a result. If I miss a strike, I know exactly what went wrong and how to fix it. There is no challenge involved. At Hillcrest, there was a real challenge in figuring out what went wrong and how to fix it, which is one of the most rewarding parts of bowling. I left Hillcrest with a 178 average and have been averaging 205 in 6 weeks at Skyway

That's why I kind of like the fact (in a weird way) I haven't thrown a ton of 200 games.
I still have that brass ring to shoot for every time I go bowling.

I hope that I have the opportunity to roll a 300 at some point
I’ve shot several 279 games, and at one point had 19 strikes in a row between 2 games. I’ll get it at some point, I’m sure. But I’ve known guys that have been bowling for 30-40 years and carry 200+ averages that still haven’t done them. It’s quite the feat

I'm a LONG way from even getting close to a 300.
But I’ve only been bowling for about 3 years now.

You never know, though
A kid that I bowled with in Juniors threw a 299. He had a 115 average, and used a house ball, house shoes, and slid on the wrong foot when throwing. With his 299 (2nd game) he finished with just a 503 series, and didn’t break 200 at any other point that season

I had a guy on my high school team who had a chicken-wing style delivery shoot a 297.
The way I figure it, if I don’t get injured in a way that affects my bowling and I stay more or less the same, I should have at least one more 300 game by the time I turn, oh, 61.

I've hit two in practice, both in 2007 at Imperial.
I have a pretty good story about the first one.

That's what I love about bowling.
Some of the best that I know have never even sniffed a 300, and some total “scrubs” have done them. You just never know. A lot has to go right for it to happen for somebody, regardless of your abilities

And after reading that, it sounds like I'm putting you down
Not the intent at all. I know your abilities, and am not surprised at all that you have shot a 300

I remember reading a story about some 8-year-old kid who shot a 300
and was the youngest person to ever do it. Now, part of me was a little bit bothered by it because I’d been bowling since age 5 and at that point hadn’t hit 12-in-a-row, but if 8 year old shoot a strike maybe once every two games on average… well, the odds of someone of that ability hitting 12 in a row is 2.44 × 10^-16.
It’s really really small, but it CAN happen.

I could get lucky, you never know.
I’d probably crap myself by the time I had 8 strikes in a row.

I feed on that feeling
Love it love it love it. Sad that it doesn’t happen as often as I’d prefer, but it’ll come

I usually start to think too much after three or four strikes.

That fourth frame is a killer.
I had one in high school practice where I had the first three, tugged a shot in the 4th to leave two pins, missed them both and told the rest of the team “oh well, it’s not like I was going to strike out anyway,” and then I went off the sheet for a 264.
