New fanpost 2/24/09 - My god I just stubbed my toe, but that's likely lllJ

What do you want to accomplish career-wise before you die?

Why can't we get rid of daylight savings time?

My record label has a new forum, and I'm not ashamed to ask you there.

What's better? Classic Super Nintendo,  Dreamcast, or Sega Genesis?

Why in God's name do the Olsen Twins look like Good Luck Trolls?!

Kermit sucks balls.

Remember those text-based games where you had to type, "west," and such? Yeah - never got past about 15 minutes of one of those.

Super NES pretty well rocks.

There were a number of great games and I think the control system was just more intuitive than Genesis. I can’t think of any really great Dreamcast games off the top of my head. The Sonic franchise was hurt by 3D.

Crazy Taxi did get ported over to GameCube, though, if not other consoles.

I just played Crazy Taxi again on a whim last week. It is a pretty good arcade-style pick-up-and-play game.

Didn't Dreamcast have a beautifully rendered 360 degree environment game, featuring a dolphin?

I knew so many people that bought a Dreamcast, and seemed like that was all they played, then N64 and PS2 released and Dreamcast folded like a cheap suit. Didn’t a company put out a platform called Jaguar? First 64 bit platform, or something like that?

Wrong...
Who knows- at least Indiana and Arizona have their shit together

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Indiana
Since April 2006, Indiana has observed DST state-wide, with the only weirdness being that some outlier counties are on Central time while the rest of the state is on Eastern (which is not that weird and happens across the US). I went to college in Indiana when they were still non-DST, and it made things a hell of a lot easier in general, but when calling people in other time zones it was a pain in the ass. In general Indiana is a stupid place though, like how no one know the origin of the word “Hoosier” (see http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/internet/extra/hoosier.html etc.), yet every other Hoosier you meet will assert that they know for sure where it came from.

Anyway, no offense to anyone from Indiana. But I would never want to live there again.

Answers to today's lovely questions.

What do you want to accomplish career-wise before you die?

To be a respected voice who’s opinions are sought after in whatever it is I end up doing when I grow up.

Why can’t we get rid of daylight savings time?

A good question. I say we chuck out the whole Gregorian calendar while we’re at it.

What’s better? Classic Super Nintendo, Dreamcast, or Sega Genesis?

I’m biased toward Nintendo products since I was raised on them, but I must say the Dreamcast was mighty awesome, particularly the built in screens on the controllers. Loved NFL Blitz on that system.

I was a proud SNES owner. I loved the Genesis but never had one.

My SNES is now hooked up to the old TV in the guestroom along with my PlayStation 2 and VCR. It’s my retro room, I suppose.

I used to have a Dreamcast but stupidly sold it once I got a PS2 in college. I miss it a lot. The 2K football and basketball games were insanely fun.

What?

by marc w on Feb 24, 2009 1:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Long story short:

We went to Lost Abbey ~6:30 Friday night for tasting and the acquisition of sweet sweet Red Poppy. At 8pm, when Lost Abbey closes to the public, the bartender stood up, informed everyone that a private birthday party was about to begin, and suggested that those who are offended by hardcore pornography should probably get ready to leave.

Porny cake!

When I went to Austin in December one of the bars we went to started showing porn at about 9pm on a Friday night with no advance warning. It was funny watching people walk in, order a drink, look at the TV, and walk back out again. This happened multiple times.

Does anybody remember the first PC they ever owned or their family owned?

We had a Commodore 64 at one point, but didn’t get another computer until we got a Tandy 2500 HD. It ran Windows 3.1, had a 25 MHz 386SX processor, and wouldn’t run the Star Trek: The Next Generation game because is didn’t have a math coprocessor.

Tandys at Radio Shack

The early ones were great because they just ran BASIC programs that you could break out of and input your own programming.

There’s nothing more entertaining to the eight-year-old mind than plugging this program into a Radio Shack Tandy:
10 PRINT “RADIO SHACK SUCKS”
20 GOTO 10

Now that’s sophisticated entertainment.

Our first real home computer was a

1992 NEC Ready desktop with a 486SX processor, but before then both of my parents had Toshiba T1100 laptops for their various works, and those were the first computers I ever really used on a regular basis.

I remember my Mom would give me a list of basic math problems and I’d crank them into Lotus 1-2-3 and get the answers when I was really little.

We also had this really basic football game that was just a bunch of X’s and O’s on the screen

I also remember going with my Dad to his office and he’d plug the T1100 into a giant docking station.

Our house was a veritable vintage computer museum when I was growing up

My Mom taught computer education classes in the early 1980s, so we had a Commodore 64 and two Vic-20s as school computers. I wasn’t old enough to really appreciate the C64 before we sold it – I spent the rest of my childhood lusting after a C64 – but I did get quite a bit of grim experience with the Vic-20s. Even by the standards of the time, they were doorstops. And god … waiting to load a program from cassette tape was just torture. It was criminal that the V20 and C64 looked so similar when they were completely diametrically opposed in the fun department. Can anybody else think of another example where two things look so similar yet they’re so completely divergent in terms of awesomeness? Michael Jordan and Harold Miner, perhaps?

Our personal computer was the very original IBM PC. Not the XT or AT – the PC. My folks splurged over time to get 640K of RAM and two 5.25 floppies. No hard drive, of course. The original games selection consisted of the usual type-in variety from magazines, Microsoft Decathlon (which consisted of hammering two keys sequentially to run), the original Microsoft Flight Simulator (which disabled collision when your view was of the map – meaning that you could taxi over water and through buildings as long as you were in map view), and, finally and fantastically, Sid Meier’s Pirates.

I also had a TI-99 as a kid. Parsec FTW.

We replaced the PC with a 386DX/33 with a 100MB hard drive – that transition was like emerging from the primordial slime into the Apollo space program. What? A sound card? Madness!

Oh, no.

Only since about 1990.

Back in the ‘50s, Mr. Disney actually requested that Annette wear a modest one-piece when she made the first Beach Party movie for AIP. As the years went on, Annette changed to a two-piece, but followed his advice and went for the ones that didn’t expose her belly button.

To bring this fanpost oddly full circle

the only real notable from the 1970’s Mickey Mouse Club, according to Wikipedia, is Lisa Whelchel, Blair from Facts Of Life. Ryan Gosling was also a cast member in the 90’s.

I don't get all of the hate for Miley Cyrus.

Even my wife hates her. To me she’s not particularly someone I would listen to, but she’s got a decent voice, decent acting (well for Disney) chops, and my son likes her show. She’s much easier to watch than half the shit out there.

and what do I get? Mitch advocating that Garret Anderson would have been better a signing, apparently because he is younger and has a higher BA the last 4 years. There was then a long discussion about a hypothetical situation arising on opening day late in the game, when Jr should be pinch-hit for and whether Wak can/will do so…

I will smash your face into a jelly.

by Phildopip on Feb 24, 2009 10:11 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not bad, just entirely predictable

Here’s a script:

Other Cast Member: “Hey Kenny – how’s it going?”
Kenny Powers: “FUCK SHIT BALLS I WAS A BALLPLAYER BITCH”
Other Cast Member: “Hey Kenny – the weather’s pretty nice today, isn’t it?”
Kenny Powers: “BELCH DRINK PUNCH RANDOM STRANGER I WAS A FUCKING BALLPLAYER BITCH”
Other Cast Member: “Hey Kenny – shouldn’t you be getting to work now?”
Kenny Powers: “COCK ASS BALLS MISOGYNISTIC TITS I WAS A BALLPLAYER BITCH”

It’s funny once. Twice, it’s mildly amusing. Two episodes worth was almost too much. I’ll give it one more shot and see if Kenny Powers develops any sort of alternate means of relating to people, but I’m not hopeful.

Wow, I must be behind on everything

I started watching House in August and decided that I would get the first four seasons, not watch season five, buy season five, and be ready for season six. Then on here, I read that it sucks now.

I started watching The Office last week, am about 3/4 of the way through season 2, and, if I understand this comment correctly, it is also going to turn for the worse.

So, does The Office plummet, and is House really that bad?

by rg scorch on Feb 24, 2009 4:28 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The Office

Season 2 was AMAZING, Season 3 was great, Season 4 started out good but then dropped off and they had trouble hitting their stride again cause of the writer’s strike. The finale to Season 4 was spectacular though.

I think Season 5 has been much better than 4 and has the potential to be better than 3, but a lot of people seem to disagree with me.

but I thought you had to spell out the whole thing. Took me extra time to type out ‘Los Angeles Dodgers’ and what not.

The one I seriously struggled with for some reason was the damn Pirates. Royals and Pirates are the least-named teams according to that site, and those two were the last ones I came up with. Which is odd, given how much we’ve been talking about the Royals recently (and, to a lesser degree, the Pirates).
