Felix should be a great buy this year.
He is getting picked ~80, and with improved defense and another year under his belt he should outperform that quite easily.
Okay, WAR based, $60 million payroll cap, no transactions.
So far I’ve got Sizemore, Markakis, Yunel Escobar, Jair Jurrjens, Kelly Shoppach, Ryan Ludwick and Jesse Litsch. I’ve got 46.5 millions left to spend.
I’m trying to decide whether to spend ~$12 million on one of the 4/5 win players left or just stick with my strategy of drafting steady players with limited injury history since if one of my regulars gets hurt I’m pretty well boned.
I’m thinking of taking Jeremy Guthrie with my next pick, but I think there will be a lot more average-ish SP making not a ton of money kicking around than 2B/3B/1B. Thoughts?
He could be a good pickup in the middle rounds, though.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 23, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions
I agree. If anything happens to Helton, Barmes (deer meat + stairs?), or Atkins, he's first in line.
We have to have a utility player and a 1B/3B type, so he could be a good one.
There’s a cap at 6,500 PA and total value is prorated down from there though, so it might be better to stay away from backup types that figure to get a fair amount of PT.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 23, 2009 3:22 PM PST up reply actions
On a hilarious side note
Ryan Ludwick will not be playing for team USA because Davey Johnson has chosen Brad Hawpe as his starter.
by JI on Feb 23, 2009 3:22 PM PST up reply actions
Brad Hawpe is good at hitting
And very, very amazingly bad at fielding.
Is he even as good as Ludwick is at the plate though? That’s one ridiculous choice.
Looking back now I wish I had taken Utley or Pujols in the second round.
I was banking on everyone avoiding those contracts until the very end. I was wrong.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 23, 2009 3:25 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah. I'd rather spend that money on a (near) sure thing like Halladay and go cheap everywhere else.
I’m sure I can put together a 2-3 win bullpen for a few million.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 23, 2009 3:30 PM PST up reply actions
Halladay is always a good bet.
Bullpen wise, you can just start grabbing A’s and M’s.
I still can't believe somebody drafted Papelbon.
I really think in a WAR-based league positional scarcity is MUCH less important
---
Juuuust a bit outside!!
http://www.rightfieldbleachers.com
I think it's important at premium positions in the early rounds.
Hanley, Sizemore, Pedroia and Upton types are rare in that they’re high WAR players at positions full of league average types that don’t make squat. But it definitely matters less than in traditional leagues.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 25, 2009 12:10 AM PST up reply actions
Wow, we have a lot of the same players
in the other league I also have Sizemore, Markakis, and Jurrjens

Alrighty then, those of you in the official LL league I still need a few returning teams to check in
And that is Katal, Scruffy Lefty, and aestivalis. Now, one of you guys is “Undead Cat Bounce”, so which ever one it is, tell me so I can cross you off. After we get everybody on board, I’ll open it up here for people to join and discuss.

People questioned
your pick of Pujols? I think I might like to join this league…
Nah he had that elbow trouble at the start of the season.
I wasn’t sure if it was a smart pick either. If I remember right I took him earlier than he was usually going.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 24, 2009 11:31 AM PST up reply actions
He's Albert Pujols
I can understand questioning his arm but he has to be at the top of the list in terms of fantasy value. There are very few players I would draft before him (if any) simply because you always know what you are going to get with him. Other players dazzle with stats and fall off the face of the earth the next year, Albert just keeps on hitting.
This was last year
Alex had just come off a massive season. There were other smart options out there.
by Edgar for Pres on Feb 24, 2009 5:20 PM PST up reply actions
There were several reports

I think he fell all the way to like 4 or 6 last year, so it really wasn’t that far.

I decided to only do one this time around. I also told a friend that I’d do the same league as him, and since this one already looks pretty full, I’m probably out. =/
No problem. I'm only doing one league this year as well.
So now we’re just waiting on aestivalis. I’ll give him until about 5PM or so to claim his spot. If he doesn’t, we’ll have openings for 10 people.

So I'm looking for the best way to set my player ranks.
What does everyone else do to set theirs?
I’ve only done Yahoo leagues and In the past I would average out the top 300 lists of ESPN, FOX and Yahoo, then subjectively adjust. This year I’m looking at WAR and subtracting the UZR factor, and while that’s working out OK, I’m finding that starting pitchers are being overvalued and I have to do more subjective adjustments. I’m trying to take myself away from it as much as I can.
Also, if I’m looking for something more advanced like a league that calculates WAR, where would I go? Is it free?
I play by ear based on Yahoo's rankings.

I've tried doing it on the fly before and have had some of my most unsuccessful drafts that way.
I’ve done very well doing it the hard way but I’d like to try a more statistical approach.

I don't know why, but I love the drafting part more then any other aspect of FB.
I’m that asshole who will draft like 16 teams and only pay attention to three of them.
BTW, I would love to be in an LL FB Yahoo based league. I promise to keep track of it :)
I'll join whatever league has an open spot.
My only regret is that I won’t be able to get CC Sabathia for Chone Figgins anymore.

We still have ~five spots open, so if you’re down to play shoot me an e-mail.
The WAR based league is a Beyond the Boxscore thing. We're using Fangraphs WAR.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 24, 2009 4:04 PM PST up reply actions
But how do you do defense? UZR numbers aren't updated daily, are they? Or even weekly?
Or do you run with something like “average UZR/150 over the past three years” or something like that?
Well, it's a draft and pray, no transaction league.
So while you won’t know exactly what’s going on, you’ll have a decent enough idea to know where you stand.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 24, 2009 11:21 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, OK, so you add up WAR at the end?
Intriguing. You’ll have to let me know what you think at the end of the year. I’d be interested in starting a league like this outside of my keeper 5×5 (OBP sted BA) league that I run. I don’t normally like to be in more than one league, but I’m saving myself for WAR.
I'm not a huge fan of the way they've done the draft so far, and it's definitely more of an experiment than anything.
Since there aren’t any transactions and no changes to the lineup/rotation, once the draft is done it’s a wait and see thing.
by Aaron Campeau on Feb 24, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions
Anybody know the extent of Utley's injury?
I’m tempted to pick him very early, but I know he’s questionable for opening day. Although, maybe this injury will bump him back a round or two..
There are better picks early on.
I’d only go for him if he falls farther than he should. Sounds like he’ll be out for a while but not too long to kill his value. There a some elite 2B and a lot of serviceable 2B. As long as you get a top 10 2B you’ll be fine I think.

Wait... LL is having a fantasy baseball league?
Can anyone e-mail me the details of this league? I’d like to join.
wongm7@gmail.com would be the e-mail
WELCOME TO THE ZONE.
The LL league is now open to the LL public.
There are 10 open spots in this 20 team league. There are a few qualifications to join. First, since this is a league for Lookout Landing members(and one friend of mine), all teams must be at least semi-regulars here at LL. I’ve gotten three emails over the last 24 hours from people who were asking to join, but had either no posts or just a few. That will not do. As such, since I’ve been keeping track of who’s who in this league, I’d like the 10 teams to reply to this post with their teams names.
Secondly, you must have at least some fantasy baseball experience. This has been a fairly competitive league, and I’d like to keep it as such. You don’t need to be good, you just need to have some experience.
Third, and most important, you must be at least semi active. Dead teams will not be allowed back. The teams I reserved spots for were teams that were active last year. I have a list of teams(and their LL usernames that go with them), that were not active last year. And while I’ll allow some of those teams back if they make in this year, I will not be allowing them if they remain inactive a 2nd time. I think everybody will agree that these things are much much funner when it’s an active league.
Failure to meet the above qualifications, will result in removal and your spot re-opened.
All settings are completely negotiable. I imported last years settings(except for the draft time obviously)Last year I thought we did a pretty good job in coming up with a consensus on everything.
Here’s the info: First come, first serve!

So I went to Yahoo fantasy baseball’s main page and said Join a New League. Then selected “Custom League”. Then I entered 126534 as the league ID and the password is “lookoutlanding”. The password is NOT “Official LL League”.

So here's the results of my first draft, my only other non LL league team...
(Disclaimer: I forgot about this draft and my 1B through DH spots (Alex Rios) were CPU drafted)
C Taylor Teagarden
1B Adam Dunn
2B Howie Kendrick
3B Chris Davis
SS Rafael Furcal
OF Ryan Braun
OF Alfonso Soriano
OF Jason Bay
Util Alex Rios
SP Jon Lester
SP Derek Lowe
RP Carlos Marmol
RP Kerry Wood
P Randy Johnson
P Tommy Hanson
P Clayton Kershaw
BN Denard Span (OF)
BN Troy Glaus (3B)
BN Kelly Shoppach ©
BN Clint Barmes (2B, 3B, SS)
BN Ian Stewart (2B, 3B)

by Edgar for Pres on Mar 1, 2009 10:27 PM PST up reply actions
I'm a fan of stacking pitchers on the bench (dumpster diving!), but that's me
Also, this year is a pain in the ass to go best-player-available strategy with the glaring holes at 2B, SS, and to an extent, even 3B. Not saying I wouldn’t do it, but OF and 1B are so much infinitely easier to fill, if you don’t get a shot at Pujols, position scarcity lends itself to being a pain in the ass later on.
Also, I hate Adam Dunn in average leagues. I hate average leagues, but Dunn is an absolute black hole when it comes to this, and if you don’t have two of Pujols/Chipper/Ichiro to counterbalance, it’ll hurt.
Basically, the best strategy this year is tabbing Albert and turning on autopick for the rest of the draft.
Alright, so I guess we're going to discuss settings and all that in league.
So for those of you in the LL league, if you want your input heard, that’s the place to say it.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
I am cool with last years settings
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
I hate average counting
That’s about it.
5×5 for OBP, HR, NSB, OPS, and H / IP, K/BB, K/9, OBPA, and OPSA are the ones my friends and I usually count. Not saying that’s usually the best way to go for fantasy, but it does remove some of the ridiculous stats (W/SV/RBI/BA) and make it a more better-players-are-more-valuable-than-bad-ones situation.
I think there are two distinct camps when it comes to fantasy baseball
I don’t mind using W, SV, R, RBI, H, HR types of stats. They might not model what is most valuable in the game but I don’t think they distract from the game. Instead of building the team that would win the most games you need to build a team that is strong in all these categories which in many ways is harder. For example, predicting a pitcher’s wins is much more difficult than predicting a player’s OPS. You need to take into account team offense and defense along with a pitcher’s talent level.
I understand the people who would rather just use more pure stats but in that case why don’t you just use WAR because any other combo of stats won’t be perfect either and will misvalue players. At least the standard format of W/SV/RBI doesn’t try to hide what it is.

Suddenly, I love Yahoo's ratings
Carlos Silva: Rank #1094, second from last (above Nate Robertson). Although, somehow Richie Sexson is on the list (NYY – 1B?) at #999.
I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.
Three Mariner pitchers rank at the very bottom of the SP rankings.
Newcomer Garret Olsen barely beats out Batista and Silva
Washburn checks in about 100 places earlier in the overall rankings.
Washburn 990
Olsen 1090
Batista 1091
Silva 1094
Average placement of the three 'starters': 1058.3
Total salary hit for 2009, averaging out the contracts: $31,000,000.
That’s awesome.
Carlos Lee
is a player I’m always confused about. I swear every year he is picked too late, and I end up picking him up in like the 5th/6th round. This year, 10 team league and I got him 56th pick. He’s a beat and somehow people ALWAYS forget about him.
He's always injured
But I can’t figure out why people hate him either. He’s a 4-cat monster, and he even gives you a few SB’s along the way.
Dude’s been underrated his whole career.
He's always injured?
Do you mean he’s always playing injured? Because last year was the first time he’s been on the DL in his career. I don’t know a ton about him, but I do know he’s never out of the lineup.
I agree that he’s quite underrated in fantasy. But very overrated in real life.
Yeah, playing injured
Or so he says.
I remember that consistent widget-update annoyance when he was basically the player that carried me in the ’05 season.
I picked him up in my 1st draft too
but not as late as you did.
I picked 1st in a 12 team league.
I nabbed Carlos during my 2nd/3rd pick sandwich. Around #24 overall.
I still felt like it was a good deal.
Without A-Rod out for a month at least, is he still a first round pick?
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
In a standard 10-man...maybe.
Depends on what you think he’ll project to this year. It can be legitimized, especially taking him in the wraparound.
He's going to try to play through it, but Lowell missed a lot of time last year.
So it’s still an issue.

a little help
Who do you guys think i can get for Nick Swisher and perhaps Felipe Lopez? I’m looking for a moderate or decent SP. It’s a pretty deep league, so there are no good ones left on the FA, otherwise this would not be an issue. I’m thinking of just holding on to them and hopefully they’ll have a decent start so I can dump them for more.
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
At the moment Swisher looks like a 4th OFer.
The best 4th OFer in the league, sure. But a 4th OFer nonetheless. I’d hang on to him.

alright
yeah, i know that the yankees have some guys in the minors that will probably be called up at some point, and swisher won’t dh too much either, cause other hitters can’t play outfield. i think he’ll be platooned, and he’s on my bench anyways. i just need some more pitchers
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
If I get a late pick in a 10 team league I'm in
I’m gonna be tempted to pick up Arod and Utley in the 1st and 2nd round. I’m not sure if that’s smart but if I make it to the playoffs my team would be pretty scary.
down the stretch yea
but A-Rod is probably going to miss significant time this year. Especially if he has surgery. If you have Reyes/HanRam get him. No real solid SS after that, the drop off is significant.
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
I'm assuming both Arod and Utley will miss a month or two of the season
or at least thats what its sounding like. They probably will both be gone in the first two rounds if that is the case. Just wondering if they would be worth it. It would be interesting to snag them both with something like the 10th and 11th pick overall. There might be better picks but it feels like a high risk – high reward move that could pay off bigtime down the stretch.
by Edgar for Pres on Mar 8, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
down the stretch no doubt
they will pay off, however Utley had a hot start last year, not a hot finish. That’s why he popped into the limelight. Honestly, i wouldn’t draft a 2B until later rounds, there are plenty of decent ones out there. As far as 3B, i’d wait for like the 4th round or so and snag Chris “Crush” Davis instead of A-Rod
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
He popped into the limelight because of a fast start last year???
If you didn’t know about Utley until his hot start last year you probably had been in a coma since 2005.
I’m really not that high on Chris Davis. I think in the 4th round he is a significant overdraft. A-Rod is up there with Pujols in talent. If you don’t want to use the top three rounds on 2B or 3B then you want to get a SS, 1B, and OF? I’m not really sure about that. There are tons of 1B and OF out there that you could take later. damn accidently cut that off
Also, I think SS is way more top heavy in talent than 2B. I think you can hunt down a good SS in the 4-6 rds if you use a pick early to get Utley who is a significantly better 2B than any others out there.

Just using 5x5 stats
Pedroia was better last year. I don’t think Utley represents the value you are putting on him, especially with him missing time to start the year.
I don't know if he'll be out at all
All indications from Philly camp have been positive. And, while I love the grit Pedroia brings to my fantasy team, the bottom line is Utley has significantly more upside in the power category.
Pedroia was great last year
Its just hard to be sure if he’s going to be more like 2008 or 2007. I’m not really buying that his power is real and if he decreases his SB total, his value will take a significant hit. He’s good but I’m just not 100% sure he’s gonna put in such a good performance this year.
by Edgar for Pres on Mar 9, 2009 1:02 AM PDT up reply actions
For me though
600 ABS of .325 is going to allow you to take a guy like Chris B Young or Rickie Weeks or Adam Dunn later who normally would destroy your average.
ok
i think everyone knew about utley before, but who was expecting him to be leading the phillies in HR’s early last year, with howard on the team. After J-Roll the drop off is pretty big in SS, yeah there are some good ones, but none that are that good.
As for second base, utley, kinsler, uggla, roberts, kelly johnson, pedroia, derosa, brandon phillips.
Chris davis was a rookie last year, unless he has a sophomore slump year he will be pretty damn good

I pulled off a Lincecum, Bedard, Morrow, Scherzer, and Garza rotation.
I also had David Price as well but most of those guys are question marks in the rotation next yera but if they manage to stay they’ll put up sexy numbers.
You got slurved bitch.
look out for Scherzer
They’re thinking of sending him to the pen, just a rumor, but his arm wears out early, unless he gets people out early; he’ll be the #5 started for now, we’ll see how it goes. I love him though, got some nasty shit
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
Since when have they talked about sending him to the pen?
Everything I’ve read says they are gonna him every single chance to continue starting.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
he has a problem with stamina, where he gets wilder in later innings, that’s why they’re saying he might be sent to the pen
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
it's not gonna be now
or soon, but they just have to see how he handles the later innings, maybe he’ll build up
"I always think one step ahead, like a carpenter....the builds stairs"
I also chose Andrew Miller with one of my later picks.
He is a risk/reward player and I thought he was worth the gamble
You got slurved bitch.
Ervin Santana
I can keep him in the 12th round of a h2h points league (10 team mixed). I’m leaning towards taking the risk, but he could also miss the whole year.
Any thoughts?
I think if you throw him back you could likely get him later than that
especially in 10 teams mixed. Throw him back.

This is a ridiculously shallow league though… it’s like 8 all star teams facing each other each week.
You can rip me on my overdraft of both Mo’ Rivera and Joe Mauer.
I would hope that you still would have teased me.
The Mauer injury scared me away. Last I saw no one had Clement in our league.
I agree about the 8 all-star teams. Should be interesting.
Ah... I see you drafted felix in the 7th round
I razzed you because I was still able to draft Cliff Lee and John Lackey in the 9th and 10th. It’s hard to argue that Felix is likely to outperform either of those two guys in 2009.

I got a shit-ton of value out of him last year when no one had heard of him.
I was able to trade Posada for something of value and plug Doumit in at C.
I imagine he’s being drafted much higher this year. If not, I’m over it. He’s definitely a top-12 fantasy catcher.
To be clear,
I think he’s higher than top 12, but I’m saying he should definitely be a starting catcher in your average fantasy league.

ESPN auction draft tomorrow 9PM Eastern
I had a bunch of people drop out, anyone that wants in email me at disposable_email_fantasybaseball@yahoo.com
Its a 10 team, custom settings, you need at least one LF, CF, and RF.
5 X 5 scoring, roto style, categories are:
HRs, OPS, runs, rbi, and net stolen bases.
WHIP, ERA, K’s, SVs, Wins.
Not the most progressive, I know.
I'm in a 12 team leauge and basically got stuck without a good SS
because they went off the board way earlier than I thought they were justified. I think I ended up with a pretty decent team but now need to figure out what to do about my SS.
I figure I can get one off waivers that will be good enough but not anything special. I could also trade for one but I’d rather wait until somebody is looking to dump an underperforming SS or something like that.
My waiver wire options:
Guzman, Greene, Bartlett, Renteria, Betancourt, Felipe Lopez, Clint Barmes, and Hairston Jr.
I’m leaning toward Guzman (avg) or Greene (hr). There isn’t too much out there but I don’t need something fantastic, just something good enough. My offense is pretty balanced right now so their strengths don’t matter too much. I feel like I can probably get the best value by picking something up the first month through the season so I’m not too worried about it but I’m also not happy with my position.
Anyway, any suggestions?
Same here.
If Tejeda counts as a bad SS.

Who do you have at SS?
But I’ll go with Aaron/Johnbai and say Greene. I like him outside of Petco. Dude has 25-homer power. He won’t hit for a high average, but if you’re down into this level and don’t have better options, I like Greene.

Okay, I could use some advice/comments
I have never done fantasy before. Didn’t even know how it worked, but I got roped in to a head to head league, did my draft, and was only then told that I had to win specific categories (I assumed it was total stats). So team:
C: Brian McCann
1B: Delgado
2B: Utley
3B: Beltre
SS: Stephen Drew
OF: Josh Hamilton
OF: Jay Bruce
OF: Justin Upton
Util: Adam LaRoche
BN: Matt LaPorta N/A (1B, OF)
BN: Ty Wigginton (3B, OF)
BN: Orlando Cabrera (SS)
BN: Giambi (1B)
BN: Travis Snider (OF)
SP: Peavy
SP: Garza
RP: Joba
RP: Mark Lowe (probably dumping)
P: Morrow
P: Rick Porcello
P: Andy Sonnanstine
14 team league.
H2H Stats:
R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS
W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, OBPA (isn’t this the same as WHIP?)
Stolen Bases is clearly punted, since I didn’t know I needed to draft fast guys (assumed OPS was more important). Saves will also be punted, because I didn’t know I needed to draft a save guy, and Lowe isn’t going to win in saves since there are 2 closers on every other team. Everything else, I have no idea. Thoughts, advice, comments, chances – anything would be helpful. Thanks.
...and now I'm here
Nice draft for your first time out, but you need more pitching depth
But there are usually lots of good unknowns that emerge early in the season, so be active in picking up a couple of them. Don’t be afraid to dump guys like Porcello, Lowe, Cabrera, LaPorta if you need roster space to pick up a valuable waiver talent. Sometimes stolen base guys can be cheap. See if you can trade a guy like Giambi for Willy Taveras. He can single-handedly win you a few SB match-ups throughout the season. Also see if you can pick up a closer. If a guy like Motte struggles, be ready to pick up Ryan Franklin (or whoever starts getting the save ops.)
Ah, thanks. Well, now that Morrow is closing, it looks like I at least have some saves depth.
SB is a serious issue, but (and I am in the same league as you), many guys drafted straight speed. My first matchup has like 120 SB to his name, so it would take a bit to catch up. Maybe I should trade for speed after that matchup and punt it the first week.
Thanks man. I hope your advice comes back to bite you after I face you in the later games =).
...and now I'm here
Well, here's mine:
This is a very simple keeper league (keep six guys every year, regardless of where you drafted them). 12 teams, head-to-head, 5×5 but we do OBP instead of BA.
C: R. Doumit
1B: L. Berkman (keeper)
2B: B. Roberts (keeper)
3B: C. Davis
SS: S. Drew
MI: K. Matsui
CI: A. Gordon
OF: C. Crawford (keeper)
OF: A. Dunn (keeper)
OF: C. Young
DH: D. Ortiz (keeper)
P: C. Sabathia (keeper)
P: D. Matsuzaka
P: J. Chamberlain
P: R. Johnson
P: J. Cueto
P: G. Floyd
P: M. Capps
P: T. Percival
BENCH:
N. Swisher
E. Dukes
J. Bartlett
P. Hughes
I. Snell
I didn’t go nuts for closers because I’ve been burned too often. I like Capps, and I can get saves off the wire.
My main beefs are that I don’t have many stud young players. I don’t have a Ryan Braun, an Evan Longoria, a Tim Lincecum, etc. My keepers are old, but I do feel good about drafting some young players who might be worth keeping in the future, such as Drew, Gordon, Chamberlain, Cueto, etc. I see a lot of upside on the roster. I went with a lot of guys I think are about to explode. Drew and Cueto, mainly. I also like my bench.
Thoughts welcome.
quick question
in one of those dynasty leagues with the milb players and all that. Im thinking about trading sizemore in this deal:

j. upton, Jarrod Parker, Jose Tabata and another mid level prospect.
does it kill me?
He really helps out by keeping my teams Glucose/9 low.
I fucking hate you Mariners
What can I realistically expect from Beltre this year?
I mean, I’m familiar with CHONE/ZiPS/Marcel etc projections for him. Any possibility he’ll outperform? I need to draft a 3B at some point and missed out on the top tier (in a Yahoo league, offensive categories are hits, homers, average, rbi, steals and strikeouts… I.E. the bizarro world where Adam Dunn isn’t that great a hitter)
He won't strike out a ton, he won't steal a lot of bases and he won't get a lot of RBI because the lineup isn't great.
His AVG should be somewhere in the .260-.275 range and it’s reasonable to expect him to hit 20-25 homers.
by Aaron Campeau on Apr 7, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd take Beltre.
Zimmerman is tempting because he’s younger and has breakout potential, but I think it’s just as likely that Beltre exceeds expectations. The only area where Zimmerman might have an edge would be AVG, and I think Beltre makes up for that in other ways. He’s also really durable and unlikely to totally crash and burn.
by Aaron Campeau on Apr 7, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Cool. Thanks again.
That was kind of my thinking. I’ve already taken a couple riskier moves so I’ll probably take him as a safer pick.
Good lord Beltre was awesome in 2004.
Dang Lincecum vs. The Brewers kill everybody but Corey Hart ok...
I hate it when my fantasy pitcher is an ace and is facing a line-up that has some of my guys in it…
You got slurved bitch.
Lincecum is sucking it up right now can't find the strike zone to save his life.
You got slurved bitch.
Fantasy sports and I have a genuine live-hate relationship
I like the fact fantasy requires me to pay close attention to players spread throughout the league (in all the sports), but if I ever find myself wanting my fantasy squad to produce against the Mariners, I’ll just go ahead and call it a life with the fantasy business.
My team in the LL 20 team league (super deep)
is stacked with shitty CF options. I have Seth Smith (CF,RF), Jody Gerut (CF,RF), and Carlos Gomez (CF) (along with Matt Joyce(LF,RF) Rocco Baldelli (util) who both might get CF eligibility).
I’m trying to figure out what to do. My offense looks decent right now but I would like to clear some roster space and pickup a RP and I’ll probably need to drop one if somebody gets injured. I could use SB (Gomez) although I’m dangerously close to just punting this category. I’m worried about playing time for the rest of the guys.
Suggestions?
I dunno, I have Maybin who isn't much better.

That is my gut
and his projections look good. I need to find some trades for Seth Smith and Carlos Gomez I think although I’m tempted to keep Gomez for his steals.

I might be tempted to take Gomez off your hands

K well I don't know what team you are
Lets see if we can come up with something. He isn’t quite for free but besides his SB and position he is useless.

I'm so happy I drafted Carpenter right now...
Thanks God i have huge SP depth.

Hopefully the oblique tear isn't too debilitating
i.e. not season ending.

Also, since this thread has re-appeared, you need to respond to my trade offer.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
I like it. Snyder could break out this year. I'm still weighing my options.

No, I don't mean respond to the trade I made, I mean respond to the trade offer I sent you.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
Honestly, I really don't like it. I need a catcher, but I'm not going to give up Davis for one. Maybe Cantu.

I'd be willing to accept Cantu instead of Davis for a return in this deal.
Send me the counter offer and I’ll accept it.

Here's my team that I'm most proud of
It’s a 10 team, h2h keeper league. We keep 10 players, I took 4th last year, but my team was very different and had a lot of under performing.
C – Bengie
1b – Tex
2b – Cano
3b – Atkins
SS – Tejada (Drew pending on waivers)
IF – Dunn
LF – Quentin
CF – Ichiro
RF – Hart
Util – Pence
Bn – Encarnacion
Bn – Young
Bn – Jackson
Bn – Scutaro
Bn – Kendrick
Sp – Felix, Harden, Cain, Pettitte, Washburn, Lohse
Rp – Morrow, Sherrill, Jenks
DL – Lackey, Webb
"Get up you crazy black man, I'm gonna make you drink my piss!" - Will Ferrell.
Wow that's even worse than me getting offered Aaron Hill and Erik Bedard for Brandon Webb and Ichiro
"Get up you crazy black man, I'm gonna make you drink my piss!" - Will Ferrell.
I got offered Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Zito for Josh Hamilton.
So….
...and now I'm here
Hahahahaha...
I’m trying to pull off a steal trade but I need to sacrifice Bedard at least…
You got slurved bitch.
I'm hoping that that getting Tex and Javier Vazquez for
Carlos Pena and Volquez turns into a steal, but I’m worried.
Two players making me love the team I drafted:
Dan Haren (71 fucking points this league in a H2H league on CBS sportsline.
Jonathan Broxton.
Beasts.
my trade
Gave up Rollins and threw in Scott Baker, got back Felix and Granderson.
Who won?
Time will tell
You’re looking good in the short term, but if Rollins and Baker get back to their expected performance, and are playing well during your league’s playoff weeks… you’ll be a sad panda. But hey, Felix and Granderson are awesome and not currently mired in death spiral slumps… so they have a pretty good chance to outperform the other pair when it comes to season totals.
I have McCann, Drew, Hamilton, Morrow and Delgado on my team.
As well as Beltre. It has not been a good year so far.
...and now I'm here
I have Morrow on two of my teams
One with only 1 DL slot, so he’s just sitting there. Same with Doumit for now.
I also have only 1 DL slot.
With 4 of my best players on the DL (after ALL of them slumped for the first 2 weeks of the season), and Delgado injured for 8 games (no DL), and Beltre’s suck. I am doing not well, and this was my first year doing Fantasy baseball. I do not think I will be doing it again.
...and now I'm here
This is what I get for picking up a Yankee even if it's Phil Hughes I went from 3rd to 15/18 in the span of a week.
The fact that my entire OF/Tulo/Jeff Baker(Godammit M’s bring up Clement already he’s the only person who can help my offense now! Well not really…) have not been producing is probably the reason but I can’t fight off that feeling…
And Hughes just gave up a HR yay!
You got slurved bitch.
Thoughts on my 2nd trade of the year?
I get:
Chad Tracy/Shin Shoo-Choo
Gomez gets:
Scott Rolen/Ben Fransisco
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
I think thats a good trade for you
I don’t really see how you lose that trade to much. Not that its really gonna matter that much. None of those players really have tons of potential.

The ultimate slump team
Here is my lineup
C- Soto (grabbed Inge on waivers)
1B- Berkman/ Dunn
2B- Iwamura/ K Johnson
3b- A-Rod
SS- Greene
OF’s Ludwick, Teahen, C. Young.
Util- Papi
SP- Oswalt, Masterson, Guthrie, Verlander, Uehara, Lowe, Davis and Cueto.
Only RP is Gregg.
Is it any wonder I am in dead last with a team BA of 225?
Justin Upton and Todd Helton are making my draft not look so bad.
.284/.363/.556 and .360/.412/.517 out of the 4th and 11th rounds aren’t bad.
You can't hide from the omnipresent eye.
I picked up Upton and Jason Bartlett off of waivers
Sadly they and Adrian Gonzalez have been the few hitters in my lineup not slumping hard these past couple weeks..
So, who's fucked now with the Manny news?
It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray
Trade help
I was offered the following:
Laporta, Lester, Mariano Rivera
For:
Braun and Scott Baker
14 team league, H2H I’m currently sitting in third to last place.
One the one hand it would give me a better closer than any I have now (Hawkins, Rodney) on the other I’d be losing one of my best offensive players so far. I can post my full line up if that helps.

He came back with
Kinsler, Lester, Rivera
for
Furcal, Braun Baker
I have JJ Hardy to take over for Furcal if I were to trade him. Kinsler seems like a big upgrade over Kelly Johnson/Joe Thurston/Alexi Cassila
My other OFers are: Matsui, Beltran, Suzuki, and Damon so I guess I’d be trading Braun’s power at OF for Kinsler’s at second.

There is an decent chance that LaPorta gets sent back down to AAA when Travis Hafner is recalled from the DL (this weekend). LaPorta will get back on the team when Dellucci gets DFA’d, but there’s no guarantee when that will happen.
The maddening logic of the Indians FO concerning playing their youfs is still in effect. Be advised.
I was offered John Baker and Felix (I would get them) for Lackey and Inge (giving these guys up.)
I have Wieters stashed on my bench, so I’ll want to sell high on Inge soon anyway.
Thoughts?
Felix is an overrated ass clown
Lackey is about to be activated, and will finish the season with better stats than Felix… of course, this is a conclusion that will be violently ridiculed by Graham/Matthew/Jeff.
Lackey didn't even finish last season with better stats than Felix
Unless of course you mean fantasy stats that don’t actually matter
by Graham MacAree on May 13, 2009 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions
This is in fact the thread for just that sort of thing.
Felix will be punished by his offense in the wins department, and only offers a marginal upgrade at K volume. Lackey traditionally K’s about 20% of his batters, right in line with Felix’s career mark. Felix is up to 25% this year.
I'm offering this trade Lincecum/Drew for Swisher/Werth.
I have Bedard/Zito/WAshburn/Miller/Carpenter in my rotation so I think I can afford to give up Lincecum and my offense has been pretty much on life support.
Thoughts on this trade?
You got slurved bitch.
Pat Burrell can start hitting any day now.

Just wanted to say
I could have picked Zimmerman for 3B and picked Beltre. Now, I’m not blaming whoever advised me above, the reasoning was solid and I probably would have made the choice on my own no matter what. But seeing ~30 game streaks is painful.
Then again I’m in a 9 team league with a few guys who clearly don’t really know what they’re doing and I’ve been in 1st or tied for 1st continuously since the season began. This is my first try at fantasy baseball. Thank god for all the SABR-type content on the net, educating me thoroughly.
Ok pulled off two kinda crazy trades
12 team Yahoo league
Traded Dourmit for Ianneta
Traded Markakis for Fielder
Have an outfield (LF,CF,RF spots) of Soriano, Markakis, Sizemore, Nelson Cruz and Jay Bruce (waiver wire grab!!!). 1B consists of Derek Lee and Nick Johnson. Catcher currently was Shoppach. My team could use some pitching help and a SS (Guzman) but these trades got rid of some of my surplus in the OF and shored up 1B and catcher some I think.
PS. I have Chipper Jones and Ryan Zimmerman (drafted to play when Chipper is hurt but hey…sometimes you get lucky) so I’m struggling to find playing time for all these hitters. With Markakis gone it will be much easier to get everyone reliable playing time.
by Edgar for Pres on May 13, 2009 11:03 PM PDT reply actions
So my roster after these trades will be
C: Ianneta
1B: Fielder
2B: Roberts
SS: Guzman
3B: Chipper Jones
LF: Soriano
CF: Sizemore
RF: Cruz
Util: Zimmerman
Bench: Bruce (probably will platoon to get lots of playing time), Derek Lee (tempted to cut for being a worthless pile of shit), Nick Johnson
SP/RP:
Manny Parra
Ricky Nolasco
Félix Hernández
Chad Qualls
Justin Masterson
Carlos Mármol
Jonathan Sánchez
Josh Beckett
Gil Meche

Any reason...
That I shouldn’t accept a trade in which I get Haren for Buerhle and Lowe? My other pitchers are Billingsley, Cain, Baker, Volstad, Wolf, and now I’m getting E Santana back.
It’s a 10 team h2h points league.
